2020 Advent Calendar from The Tea Girl – Day 9

So after my morning vanilla matcha, I was ecstatic to see that my afternoon brew was also going to be vanilla! I remember the DAVIDSTea vanilla orchid oolong…it was one of my favorites back in the day, so I was also excited for some nostalgia with this tea!

It smells sooo yummy! I love how delicate the cornflowers look with the tea!

Steeped at 195 degrees for 3 minutes. The leaves nicely unfurled, and the cup was lightly sweet, fresh and not too strong. A touch of astringency, but in a gentle way. I found this like a mellow cupcake, with a hint of dryness. Pretty enjoyable! I am sad I did not get a chance to do a second steeping, but my caffeine quota was definitely met for the day between this one and the matcha. Very yum, may have to order more of this to play around with it! Excited for my next steeping!

DavidsTEA Matcha Advent Calendar 2020 – Day 9

This is the week for dessert matchas! I was so pleased to open this one up! I miss Red Leaf Tea’s vanilla matcha so much, it was one of my gateway matchas. This brought back some nostalgia!

Unfortunately I could not get a froth while whisking to save my life lol, found out that it is the coconut sugar making it more difficult. Luckily it did not affect the delicious matcha flavor! Smooth, sweet, not overpowering and not artificial. Yumminess in a cup!

Prepared the usual way, 175 degree water, whisk, top up with hot water. Delish!

2020 Advent Calendar from The Tea Girl – Day 8

Another note I am behind on – this one was tasty and interesting! A fruity, floral white tea…it was very pillowy and soft tasting to me :) definitely romantic, I enjoyed it more than I thought I would as the florals were well balanced with the fruit flavors. A good base that wasn’t overpowering either!

DavidsTEA Matcha Advent Calendar 2020 – Day 8

I got a bit behind with my tea notes..will catch up today! This matcha was amazing for Day 8! I loved the subtle sweetness, and the maple really paired well with the mellow matcha base. I could totally get more of this and be content, it might be my favorite of the advent calendar so far! Prepared with my usual method, 175 degree water, whisk, top up water, drink. Very tasty :D

2020 Advent Calendar from The Tea Girl – Day 7

Since this was a herbal, I made this one in the afternoon, quite late yesterday and I lacked drinking my water yesterday so I was so thirsty for it! This one pleasantly surprised me! I looked up the ingredients before making (as I always do) and saw my friend hibiscus…so was not optimistic. I decided to go all out and do a 4 minute steeping since it was mostly berries too…and verdict – it was quite good!

Not sure what was up yesterday, but I found the tartness refreshing and not overpowering (like most hibiscus). Maybe I was needing some vitamin C haha. The berry flavors were quite well done, and I feel this tea would take sweetener well, even though I didn’t add any. Super thirst quenching as well! So a happy hibiscus surprise, and I will easily finish my sample of this one!

Cameron B.

I had a hibiscus-y fruit tisane surprise me the other day, too! Sometimes you’re just in the right mood, I guess. ;)

mrs.stenhouse12

Haha totally agree! I hope I’m still in the right mindset when I have the second cup eventually haha!

Cameron B.

And if not, you can always put the rest in time-out in the fridge! These teas are almost always better iced.

Courtney

That’s what I did this morning with the raspberry prosecco. Fingers crossed!

DavidsTEA Matcha Advent Calendar 2020 – Day 7

Taking Roswell ‘s lead on this again and logging the Day 7 honey infused matcha to this tea, as this tea was in the honey. I had high hopes for this and was going to put it on toast, but had a small taste on it’s own and…no. Lol not my favorite flavor. Now full disclaimer – we have our own bees in our yard so we get some pretty fine very local honey at my place lol. I think this has spoiled my perceptions of any other honey. And on top of that, the super grassy note of the matcha in the honey…it reminded me of dark seaweed with sweetness. Not my thing lol.

Couldn’t bring myself to put this on toast, but did whisk up some Pumpkin Pie matcha and added a bit in there, and it worked out okay as it was pretty masked! Will probably finish the little jar of it in that manner haha. Not sure if I will be brave enough to try it on toast…interesting for sure!

Cameron B.

I tried it on toast too, and nope LOL!

mrs.stenhouse12

@ Cameron B. – hahah oh man! You are brave! I couldn’t bring myself to…and hearing this resounding endorsement from you now…may not ever LOL!

Cameron B.

I mean it’s not awful, there’s just too much matcha in it to use that way IMO. Also the texture is really weird so I ended up warming mine to make it spreadable…

mrs.stenhouse12

Haha, yeah I found with my small taste the matcha was way too overpowering…I imagine it would be worse on toast. Yeah it’s a bit gritty for texture!

2020 Advent Calendar from The Tea Girl – Day 6

I almost missed having this tea as I realized I hadn’t checked it out at 3:30 yesterday, and after 4 pm I avoid caffeine lol. But got it in, and still slept good!

I was at a loss for how to brew this one – it’s a blend of black and green tea…so the temperature was a bit tricky. I decided on oolong temperature (195 degrees) as a compromise. It turned out pretty good – sweet and floral, I enjoy lavender teas so no complaints here! I may play around with water temperature a bit more for my next cup, might steep a bit longer and with a cooler temperature. Enjoyable, and will finish the sample easily!

DavidsTEA Matcha Advent Calendar 2020 – Day 6

Backlog from yesterday – I have determined I like berry flavored matchas the best of the fruity matchas so far. This one sure smelled amazing when whisking – very fresh blueberry scent! I liked this one as it was not too sweet, and you could get the matcha flavor in it too. Will easily finish off this sample!

2020 Advent Calendar from The Tea Girl – Day 5

Day 5 – first chai! I love chai, especially if prepared stove top, but normally the caffeine gets me with them as it’s normally a finer black tea. This one was no exception on the caffeine front lol so I didn’t quite finish my massive mug of it. But as for flavor – this was pretty good! It reminded me of a mix of Stormy Night by DT (probably the star anise and chocolate) and a chai I had from Verdant back in the day. I found it to be a soothing chocolate and not a fake chocolate, which was good! The black base was great, robust! I would definitely like to make this one stove top and add some milk and a touch of honey – bet it would really shine! I would like the ginger and chili to be a touch stronger too, as I love spicy teas!

Overall a very tasty chai! Will definitely finish off my sample, and as it is a local company may end up reordering! Enjoyable, I just have to watch the caffeine in it haha.

DavidsTEA Matcha Advent Calendar 2020 – Day 5

Taking a page out of Roswell Strange‘s book tonight haha – this was the matcha advent day #5, but it was in white chocolate format! Haha so it wasn’t labeled…so I had to actually message Roswell Strange to confirm what tea was in the chocolate lol. It was very sweet and good, and did not last very long…but I had no idea what it was, as I haven’t had the Salted Caramel matcha yet!

I also got the hubby to read the ingredients on the back of the box to try to help me deduce what it was…unfortunately to no avail hahaha. Ah well, it was very good, although I confess – I was a bit disappointed that there wasn’t a matcha tea to make to go along with it! Would love a pairing next year (chocolate + smaller amount of tea for one day). Very tasty though!

Will leave off a rating until I actually try the tea itself lol.

Profile

Bio

Hello all, I am an electrical engineer (read:NERD :D), who is a bit obsessed with tea! I discovered loose tea in 2011, DAVIDsTEA in 2012 and it took off from there. I really started drinking/enjoying tea because it was excellent to take to class in the morning and because I can’t handle coffee! (unless it’s a really good cappuccino or latte, or decent decaf haha)

I enjoy a variety of teas – current favorites being ripe and raw pu’erhs, chinese black teas and herbal/green rooibos blends. I also enjoy white, green, and oolong teas, although I tend to drink them more in the warmer months. I have also tried matcha and guayusa, but I don’t drink them too often as I am a bit sensitive to caffeine. As a result I don’t drink black teas as often as I used to, but in moderation I can still enjoy a wide variety of teas.

Oh, and I have a severe peanut allergy and try to avoid most other nuts, just to be safe. Limits my tea choices a bit, but that’s ok. However I have tried almonds and found out I can eat them, so I have been trying a few teas with them in them.

mrs.stenhouse12’s rating system
