Thanks Ost for the sample! :)

Well, this isn’t terrible, or anything, but it isn’t outstanding in any way. I imagine this would be a good one to brew strong, sweeten and pour over ice. The white tea is actually kind of greeny tasting, which doesn’t bother me, but I could see it being too astringent for some folks.

Thank you so much Ost for the sample!

This tea wasn’t even on my radar…but it should have been. It tastes just like one of those crunchy almond cookies some Chinese restaurants serve. YUM! My only complaint is the base tea is kind of flat and boring. Which is really the problem with most flavored teas, no matter how good the flavoring! sigh

Ost

Happy you liked it!

I’ve been so curious about this one! Thank you Ost for letting me try it!

So, let me start by saying I’m drinking this straight, no milk or sugar here. It is VERY roasty. Almost to the point that it reminds me of coffee. There is some subtle caramel or burnt sugar flavor, too. I actually like this quite a bit, but I’m not sure if I’ll choose to order any if I ever make a Lupicia order. There seem to be other teas that fit this category for me. (American Tea Room’s Brioche, I’m looking at you.)

Agree w/coffee notes. I added tiny bit of MS and I think I prefer it unsweetened .

Delicious shou! Completely funk-free with some nice raisin notes. Very nice stuff :)

Cheri

funk free is always important

Starfevre

don’t you want to get down in funkytown?

Stephanie

lol…I enjoy funkytown just not in my shou! ;)

mrmopar

They tend to lose the “funk” as they age. Some producers "hold"their tea to market to allow some of this to dissipate. This is a really nice one.

drank Special Dark by Mandala Tea

It is a special dark kind of day…drizzly, rainy and cool. So comforting!

I am running dangerously low on this favorite! I will have to stock up soon for the winter :)

Oh. So yummy.

Another great sheng!!!

I steeped this semi-western, which is my habit when making sheng at work. Steep #1 was a little on the weak side, but steep #2 was GREAT! Lovely huigan, and bright grassy flavor. Just enough light sweetness and pleasant bitterness to make it interesting. The name of this one is really apt. It really reminds me of a green/sheng hybrid.

So glad I got the Mandala raw sampler :)

Starfevre

What is semi-Western steeping?

Stephanie

Somewhere between Western and Gongfu. Larger amount of water than gongfu, and longer steeping time, but not quite long enough to be western. I usually do like one minute.

Starfevre

Okay. Thanks!

OMG this was an amazing sheng.

I drank on the leaves all day, towards the end just leaving them in my cup to continue to steep as I drink…

The first few steeps were a bit woody, but not in a bad way at all. There was some gentle smokiness too. No bitterness or astringency that I could find. Usually I enjoy sheng with a more bold fruity or floral taste/scent, which I did not get much of here at all, but wow, as this one began to open up as the steeps progressed and it sweetened, it was magical nonetheless! I guess I can appreciate the “sweet wood” type of sheng after all! I had a rough afternoon and the energy from this really helped me power through. Clarity in a cup! Thanks very much to my special Steepster friend for a sample of this one :)

YAY! I’m happy that Mandala did a raw sampler. Thanks for doing that Garret! I’ve been looking forward to trying this one in particular.

This is a bold, fruity and floral young sheng! It has plenty of qualities I love in a sheng, including a great energy. My only complaint is that it does have just a tiny bit of bitterness if brewed the way I typically like mine. Don’t let that scare you though, this has PLENTY to offer! YAY! Sheng-a-licious!

TheTeaFairy

I love this one!
