I had a terrible experience at this place years ago, when taking a friend for a tasting. The issue started when the person who prepared the tea for the tasting used water that was too hot and the tea got stewed. The tea being prepared was green tea and wasn’t supposed to be brewed with such hot water. As a result, all of the tasting samples were extremely bitter and unpalatable and no subtle notes in either taste or smell were detectable. I mentioned this to them, wanting to give them another chance to do things correctly. But, the person who prepared the tea had an attitude with me instead of fixing things. When I mentioned to the friend I had brought with me (who was new to tea drinking) that the tea wasn’t supposed to taste like that, the person who prepared the tea snapped at me for talking. It was a horrible experience, especially seeing as I had made this a trip for my friend to share my love of tea with them.

I purchased a small amount of tea before leaving and it was very overpriced for the quality. I didn’t return to this shop.

There are other much better shops across town in the Chinese area of the city. The people there are incredibly sweet and welcoming and their tea is much more reasonably priced for the quality. I went back to those shops many times and would recommend them over this one without hesitation.

Serene atmosphere, knowledgeable employees. Tea lovers rejoice…..the best place in Montreal is located in the heart of the Quartier Latin. Nice little pastries as well. Very grounded/earthy décor. Cell phones are discouraged. Perfection!

For those familiar with tea houses, here you will find friendly servers, wonderful atmosphere, and a great selection of teas.

General tips for those who are new to tea houses! Don’t expect food. Note that the servers take the preservation of the atmosphere verrry seriously. And don’t be afraid to experiment!

Camellia Sinenis is my favorite teahouse/teashop. The atmosphere is peaceful and subdued, but never pretentious; the servers are friendly and knowledgeable; and most importantly, the teas are top notch. From standard green and black varieties to rare aged puerhs and oolongs, Camellia Sinensis is a must-try, whether you’re new to tea or a connoisseur .
