So… I got a rat!

He’s adorable and precious, and I named him Wasabi. He’s a pretty little, tiny thing: only two months old and really tiny, curious and hyper active. I want to take pictures but thus far I’ve been unable to take ones where he’snot blurry. I’ll keep trying!

Anyway, before I went to the pet store I stopped at DAVIDsTEA to get something to drink while I decided on my new furry friend. I let a coworker, Tanner, pick out whatever he wanted for me to drink. He chose this one! I can always trust Tanner to pick out something good; our taste seems to overlap a lot.

Strong fruity notes of plum, apple, and quince with light honey/caramel undertones. Sweet overall and just ultimately pleasing.

Matu

Is this the sort of pet you would pour tea rinses on? ;)

Roswell Strange

Haha, definitely not. I think the hot water would burn his skin; which is made of rat flesh ;)

Arby

You’d better post pictures! I adore rodents (used to breed gerbils), so can’t wait to see Wasabi. I’m very happy and excited for you.

…And all of the Chai blends officially tried! Until they come out with new ones, anyway.

Honestly, I didn’t taste any major differences between this one and Chai & Mighty. I think I’d probably have to do a direct comparison to tell them apart and you know what? I don’t want to. That said, this one as a latte with some honey? As someone who doesn’t like Chai, that was pretty good!

Hot cuppa.

I really like the robust, fruity pomegranate and raspberry notes in this tea. So much so that, actually, this has become my “Go To” suggestion for not only fruity green teas but flavoured greens in general. That said, I thought this particular cup was a little too grassy/heavy on the base for me to get as into it as I would’ve liked.

Large cold brew pitcher…

This was another one that my roommates devoured the entire pitcher of it, save one small 1/2 glass I managed to sneak in before it was gone. You know what though? I think secretly I’m glad they drank it because I didn’t really find it all that satisfying.

EDIT: Just so everyone doesn’t think my roommates are dicks for this reason, at least I keep two pitchers of cold brew in the fridge. The smaller one is my daily one that’s off limits, and the other is a large, shared “free for all” pitcher they’re more than welcome to. They just usually don’t drink it all so fast.

Cold Brew Sipdown (121)!

Brought this one in to work and shared with coworkers. We played a guessing game, of sorts, with the flavour notes and ingredients so see if they could blindly identify any of them. My assistant manager did the best and was able to name both the ginger and orange. No one got the sage, which is the other key player here. A few people guessed ginger pear…

I really enjoyed this one cold brewed though; I felt like the earthy/spiciness was still present but the brightness of the orange was more the focus point of the sip. If we weren’t going into spring, I might be tempted to order more of this. I don’t see it being something I’d reach for often Spring/Summer though.

Sadly I don’t remember much from this cup apart from the fact it was Western style and at work. My note keeping got gradually better over the week the more I was realizing it might be an extended period before I’d have a laptop again. This was the point in the week where all I wrote down was “sweet smoke” under the name of the tea in my little journal.

Thanks again for the journal VariaTEA; it was a life saver this week.

Yay! I am glad its useful :)

Drank this one at work during my week without internet access…

I feel like I genuinely liked this one more the second time around; both the maple and marshmallow notes just seemed richer/stronger to me. The roastiness could have used a bit of a boost to compete with the sweetness of the maple, but it was still a very solid cup. For some reason it tasted a touch boozey though?

Also shared it with my two assistant managers: one loved it, and even asked for the website I got it from. The other not so much; he didn’t like the pairing of such sweet flavours and roasty Genmaicha. Buzzkill…

OMGsrsly

I love how you’re bringing more tea education to the tea store. ;)

There are people who don’t like the pairing of such sweet flavours and roasty Genmaicha? That’s just crazy talk.

Cashew Milk Matcha Latte!

I’m really bad, when I order matcha, for opening all the bags at once because I like to try everything but I’m gonna try really hard to pace myself with this order. I want things to stay fresh as long as possible…

And so, before I opened one of the bags, I consulted all the matcha drinkers at work about what kind from the order they would most want to try. This was the winner, and so it’s where I started. It was REALLY good; very creamy for sure with the extra sort of boozey sweetness that Irish Cream has. The whole mug was warm and rich, and felt like a big silky hug from the inside out. I’m really excited to share it with my coworkers because I’m sure they’re going to love it!

Next up? Trying it with Baileys…

Cold Brew Sipdown (122)!

Made a pitcher of this one, and I’m sure glad I decided to take a thermos of it with me to work the morning after I strained it because I came home from work and both roommate had already polished it off!

I didn’t mind this one; the blueberry came through quite clearly and strongly for me. I didn’t taste the other two berries so much, though. What was really missing for me was just a bit of sweetness. Instead this had a little bit of a drier, flatter taste that left me wanting more out of each sip. Not as good as DT’s Blueberry Jam, imo.

Had this iced with honey the other day on shift; I’ve been drinking a lot more tea with honey as of late. Not sure why the sudden shift; I guess I just really like/appreciate the flavour? I found that the honey added to this exaggerated the red berry notes/raspberry in a very pleasant way. Conversely, aspects like the juniper seemed more masked/covered. Like anything it’s give and take.

Profile

Bio

Hello! My name is Kelly, though many people in the tea community call me Ros or Roswell.

I am a mid-twenties tea addict, blogger, and all around nerd. I grew up in the Prairies, but a few years ago I relocated to Quebec to pursue a career with DAVIDsTEA in the tea industry! I’m still working on getting my French language skills down…

My first introduction to tea, in any form outside of instant and bottled iced tea, was about seven years ago when I happened to stumble upon DAVIDsTEA while looking for a birthday present for a friend! I tried their Birthday Cake rooibos blend, and I’ve been hooked on tea ever since! In those seven years; I was introduced to the online tea community, expanded my interest in flavoured teas to include a deep love and appreciation for straight teas and traditional brewing methods, got a tea themed tattoo, started reviewing teas, amassed a sizable tea and teaware collection, became a TAC certified Tea Sommelier, & even came full circle by beginning a career in the tea industry with DAVIDsTEA!

I consider myself a Jack of all Teas, and strive to have a knowledge and appreciation of all tea types, formats, and styles of drinking. I don’t like to feel boxed in to just being a “flavoured tea” or “straight tea” drinker – my expectations may vary depending on the type of tea or how it’s been processed/prepared but if it’s good tea, it’s good tea no matter how it’s been made!

You name it, I probably drink it- and I’ll absolutely try anything at least once.

My default method of preparation is hot, Western style, and straight – but I’m not opposed to additions if I’m in the right mood. If I ever add something to a tea or use a different method of preparation I will ALWAYS call it out in the tasting note though.

I like to listen to music when drinking tea, especially when I’m brewing a large pot at a time or steeping Gongfu. Often I curate very intentional tea and music pairings, and sometimes I share them here in my tasting reviews. Music is something that I find can deeply affect the experience of having tea.

I’m also one half of the “tea and fandom” podcast GeekSteep where, weekly, we discuss newly explored fandoms over tea as well as try to figure out the perfect tea to pair with each fandom. You can find us on Spotify and Apple & Google podcasts.

Favourite flavour notes/ingredients: Pear, lychee, cranberry, cream, melon, pineapple, malt, roasty, petrichor, sweet potato, heady florals like rose, hazelnut or walnut, sesame, honey (in moderation), and very woody shou.

Least favourite flavour notes/ingredients:
Lemongrass, ginger, strongly spiced profiles (and most Chai in general), mushrooms, seaweed, chamomile, stevia, saltiness or anything that reminds me too much of meat that isn’t supposed to taste like meat…

Currently exploring/obsessed with: Sheng from Yiwu, Yancha (Qilan in particular), anything with a strong sweet potato note. Also, I need to try ALL the root beer teas! Searching for a really good caramel flavoured blend, ideally with a black tea base.

Please contact me at the instagram account listed below if you would like me to review your teas.

Currently I’m employed in the tea department of the DAVIDsTEA head office. While I’m still sharing my own personal thoughts on new & existing DAVIDsTEA blends, I am no longer numerically rating them due to the obvious conflict of interest. Any comments expressed are a reflection of my own thoughts and opinions, and do not reflect the thoughts and opinions of the company. Any DAVIDsTEA blends you currently see with a numeric score were reviewed prior to my being hired there and have not been adjusted since becoming a DAVIDsTEA employee.
