SSTTB: Pick #10

So this is a company that’s new to me. Like, really new to me; I don’t think I’d ever even heard of them? But there’s are a whole bunch of different blends from them in the box so I decided I needed to try at least one of them. Problem is that they’re pretty much all Chais or have Ginger in them. Ick.

But this one smells intensely like juicy lemon candy or lemonade with no presence of ginger at all so I decided to cold brew it with the hope it would be the same way once it was strained. And it is! It’s this really juicy sweet lemonade with no ginger at all. It kinda reminds of Meyer Lemons actually!

It feels like a really good summer tea; lemonade like and juicy! I could probably drink this one often if the ginger stayed absent like it is now. Yummy!

Flavors: Lemon, Orange, Sweet

Sipdown (153/158)!

So apparently who can text each other first is a thing that people in relationships do; and I’m a competitive person so I attempted to stay up until 6AM last night/this morning (because that’s when Tyrell normally gets up; and fuck getting up that early, I thought it’d be easier to just stay up that late) but instead ended up passing out somewhere around 5 AM and then slept in today until about 3 PM – and I’m still exhausted.

Bad idea.

But this is what I’m starting the day with. It was one of my two requested samples in my most recent Butiki order that I got yesterday – I liked the idea of it being a tangerine tea instead of orange and cream is always a plus. Dry it smells like a sweet and sorta tart tangerine, with an earthy guayusa element that reminds me of what air smells like after a major thunderstorm. That’s something I’ve been experiencing a lot this week; it’s rained quite heavily every day this week…

Steeped up, it’s actually much more mellow than I thought it would be. The tangerine is kinda gentle and smooth and the earthy guayusa really dominates over it in a way that’s very close to being too much. I do get some cream elements in this but for me it’s not working. I don’t get Creamsicle so much as I do curdled citrus and milk. That flavour is really only present in the aftertaste, but it’s definitely not appealing and it’s kind of ruining the cup for me.

And I found it only got worse as the cup cooled.

So, this one isn’t a winner for me and I doubt something I’ll drink again but I’m very happy to have tried it because now I know. I mean, it wasn’t terrible but there were just elements to it that didn’t tie in together well for me. I can see how/why other people might like it, though.

SSTTB: Pick #9

Last tea of the night.

This is, I believe, my first experience with Tea Gschblahblahblah. I’ve definitely heard good things about them though so I was stoked to see a couple of their blends in The Box. The other one is very cinnamon heavy in smell which didn’t appeal to me; this smelled really creamy though and I liked the idea of comparing it to the other eggnog rooibos blend in The Box so I made a cup of it.

I have to say, right off the bat I like this a lot more than the 52Teas version; it’s much more flavourful and has a thicker, more full mouthfeel. Immediately I picked up on heavy egg and cream notes and a whole bunch of smooth, rich vanilla. I want to say there were also playfully light caramel notes intermingling with everything. And, it’s kinda amazing how much this one didn’t taste like rooibos or honeybush. I mean, I don’t know what the base tasted like – but not that.

I don’t know how much “spice” (Nutmeg and such) I got – I really didn’t notice any peaking out over the other flavours. For that reason I don’t know if this was really a “true” eggnog flavour. More so, I think this reminded me of a vanilla custard or Creme Brulee type thing. It was very good, though! I’d certainly drink it again – maybe stock it if it was possible to do so in a smaller amount.

Yummy! I think this might be the most impressive blend from the box so far!

Flavors: Caramel, Cream, Sweet, Vanilla

Haha! Tea Gschblahblahblah is exactly what I think of every time I read a review on one of those teas :-)

And of the 12th Day of Christmas Steepster gave to me Twelve Drummers Drumming…

Sipdown (154/159)!

First just let me say that I feel like a huge tool for not having logged this one sooner given that I got it all the way back in DECEMBER. I have had it a few times since then though, I guess I just haven’t taken the moment to write about it.

My bad.

Thank you KatieK for the very generous sample. Really I should say pouch though, because that’s what it was. At the time it was one of the first straight whites I’d had. And, I really like it actually! It’s very creamy and milky with sweet hay notes and maybe apricot or something else lightly fruity to it? It reminds me of Butiki’s Doke Silver Needle in a lot of ways, actually. Though I definitely prefer Doke Silver Needle, which is good because I just stocked up on that one.

The last little bit of this one will be going into the SSTTB to kinda try to offset all the black blends in it. Some variety is definitely needed! And, I just finished adding OMGsrsly’s requested teas so I think that officially marks the last of what I’m adding IN to the box – now to just finish up trying off the things I set aside to try and send it off! The goal is to get it out (as well as my stuff from VariaTEA) by the end of next week at the latest.

Sipdown (155/160)!

Man, this one still has me totally confused by what it’s trying to be and what it actually is. Tonight it still tastes like lemon but in a more Pledge like way (ugh!) with a very seperate creaminess to it and then a stronger hazlenut kinda thing going on.

What the fuck!?

At least this is the last cup of this strange and confusing tea, so my mind can rest a little and be at peace once more.

Unrelated but very exciting; the cast has been announced for Big Brother Season 16 in the US! Yay more Big Brother! I’m a die hard Big Brother fan (been watching since I was twelve) and I’m sure some people remember me freaking the fuck out over the Canadian BB this year. Well, prepare to have that all over again!

Sadly I can’t watch the live feeds this time around because they’re not offered to Canadian viewers which is disheartening, but I’m sure it’ll still be awesome regardless! Any other Steepsterites gonna be watching? I’d love to have someone to gush to/with.

This is the cast list: http://www.globaltv.com/bigbrother/cast/index.html?n=zach+rance

I just finished skimming profiles and I have to say no one stands out to me right now as super super awesome – although a few stand out in a negative way to me; namely Amber, Hayden, and Nicole… Ugh vain people!

But yeah; squeals of excitement!

VariaTEA

Do you also watch Big Brother After Dark? I have another friend who is completely obsessed and she won’t even go out with us when the show is on.

Mixed this with some Caramel MATCHAccino to make a matcha milkshake. Unfortunately for me I thought this was very masked by the caramel, even though I think there was more of this than caramel? But Tre said he tasted the white chocolate more than the caramel.

You can read more on that here: http://steepster.com/roswellstrange/posts/250012#likes

Don’t think I’ll be restocking this one. It really wasn’t for me. I just couldn’t find a way to make the flavour pop or stand out, and “subtly creamier” is not what I’m looking for in my matcha.

Tre and I actually had a sit down supper tonight which was really weird for us. I mean, it was midnight so that’s also weird on top of everything – but it was kinda nice? He cooked this odd “baked egg” dish with Ketchup Popcorn Seasoning on it that was really good, but would have been better if the egg yolk was runny. And then my contribution was a matcha milkshake!

This one had a frozen banana, two scoops of vanilla Greek Yogurt, a bottle of Vanilla milk, and the last of this matcha(ccino) and my white chocolate matcha. I’m not sure how much matcha honestly; I didn’t measure – just dumped. Less than a tbsp. of each?

I’m glad to be out of this; it was taking forever to finish off and was just so sweet in everything I put it in. That worked out well for this one though; it was creamy, frothy and frosty bananas with a rich, bold caramel flavour. Unfortunately the white chocolate was really masked; at least to me anyway. Tre said he tasted the white chocolate more than the caramel but I don’t have a clue how that could have been true. This was so caramel flavoured!

It was nice though… And now I’m super wide awake.

SSTTB: Pick #8

Don’t you hate when you notice that a tea you thought was added to your cupboard actually isn’t, so your number is off? I just had that happen with DT’s Vanilla Orchid. Apparently I forgot to add it when I picked up 50g of it. Logging Long Life Oolong just now reminded me of that… Blerg.

But anway; I made this for work today. I actually have no idea who the character is so this is one fandom blend that really didn’t get me interested because of the character association – I just took a whiff of it and thought it smelled decent for a Chai and was curious.

Is it just me or is The Box very Chai heavy?

It was ok; the base was light and came off smooth so I guess I didn’t push the steep time too much. Coconut was very dominant in the cup, and then a mix of ginger and lemon grass. Those last two are not really favourite flavours of mine but it worked out ok. It served its purpose at the time and was nice enough but I could go without ever drinking it again and be fine with that.

Flavors: Coconut, Ginger, Lemongrass, Smoke

VariaTEA

It was quite chai heavy.

VariaTEA

Though there were some interesting chais in the mix. And, it was great for trying new straight black teas.

Sipdown (157/162)!

I cold brewed up the last of this and I have to say, I wasn’t sure how I’d feel about being out of this because I always switch back and forth between wanting it stocked and wanting to sip it down, but I think I mostly just feel relieved that it’s gone because now I can just not worry about it.

This was really good though; the cold brew is nuttier than the hot cup, and the tea feels even more peaches & cream oatmeal like (maybe because of the extra nut?). I really tasted the sweetness of the apricot in this brew and some extra floral qualities. There was a little bitterness by the end of the thermos, but it had been sitting in the staff room all day so no hard feelings or anything like that…

This was one of my oldest teas (from August 2013 when I first got into tea) so it feels nice to finish it off and move on to something else.

Flavors: Apricot, Floral, Nuts, Oats, Orange, Orchid, Pear

VariaTEA

Yay for finishing up older blends!

Got a bit more of this with my latest Butiki batch which arrived today; I can never resist pulling a couple leaves out of this everytime I open it up and just sucking on them…

I don’t know why; but I just can’t resist with this one. It’s like a waffle and honey flavoured life saver; so good! I sucked on my tea leaf all bus ride! It was the best compromise I could think of given the lack of time to really delve into my Butiki order or make any teas other than my work teas for the day.

Flavors: Honey, Pastries

VariaTEA

This one always sounds so delicious.

Profile

Bio

Hello! My name is Kelly, though many people in the tea community call me Ros or Roswell.

I am a mid-twenties tea addict, blogger, and all around nerd. I grew up in the Prairies, but a few years ago I relocated to Quebec to pursue a career with DAVIDsTEA in the tea industry! I’m still working on getting my French language skills down…

My first introduction to tea, in any form outside of instant and bottled iced tea, was about seven years ago when I happened to stumble upon DAVIDsTEA while looking for a birthday present for a friend! I tried their Birthday Cake rooibos blend, and I’ve been hooked on tea ever since! In those seven years; I was introduced to the online tea community, expanded my interest in flavoured teas to include a deep love and appreciation for straight teas and traditional brewing methods, got a tea themed tattoo, started reviewing teas, amassed a sizable tea and teaware collection, became a TAC certified Tea Sommelier, & even came full circle by beginning a career in the tea industry with DAVIDsTEA!

I consider myself a Jack of all Teas, and strive to have a knowledge and appreciation of all tea types, formats, and styles of drinking. I don’t like to feel boxed in to just being a “flavoured tea” or “straight tea” drinker – my expectations may vary depending on the type of tea or how it’s been processed/prepared but if it’s good tea, it’s good tea no matter how it’s been made!

You name it, I probably drink it- and I’ll absolutely try anything at least once.

My default method of preparation is hot, Western style, and straight – but I’m not opposed to additions if I’m in the right mood. If I ever add something to a tea or use a different method of preparation I will ALWAYS call it out in the tasting note though.

I like to listen to music when drinking tea, especially when I’m brewing a large pot at a time or steeping Gongfu. Often I curate very intentional tea and music pairings, and sometimes I share them here in my tasting reviews. Music is something that I find can deeply affect the experience of having tea.

I’m also one half of the “tea and fandom” podcast GeekSteep where, weekly, we discuss newly explored fandoms over tea as well as try to figure out the perfect tea to pair with each fandom. You can find us on Spotify and Apple & Google podcasts.

Favourite flavour notes/ingredients: Pear, lychee, cranberry, cream, melon, pineapple, malt, roasty, petrichor, sweet potato, heady florals like rose, hazelnut or walnut, sesame, honey (in moderation), and very woody shou.

Least favourite flavour notes/ingredients:
Lemongrass, ginger, strongly spiced profiles (and most Chai in general), mushrooms, seaweed, chamomile, stevia, saltiness or anything that reminds me too much of meat that isn’t supposed to taste like meat…

Currently exploring/obsessed with: Sheng from Yiwu, Yancha (Qilan in particular), anything with a strong sweet potato note. Also, I need to try ALL the root beer teas! Searching for a really good caramel flavoured blend, ideally with a black tea base.

Please contact me at the instagram account listed below if you would like me to review your teas.

Currently I’m employed in the tea department of the DAVIDsTEA head office. While I’m still sharing my own personal thoughts on new & existing DAVIDsTEA blends, I am no longer numerically rating them due to the obvious conflict of interest. Any comments expressed are a reflection of my own thoughts and opinions, and do not reflect the thoughts and opinions of the company. Any DAVIDsTEA blends you currently see with a numeric score were reviewed prior to my being hired there and have not been adjusted since becoming a DAVIDsTEA employee.
