drank Mango Lemon Balm by Teeccino
15662 tasting notes

I don’t think it’ll ever stop surprising me how much I enjoy this flavour option since, with the standard Teeccino base blend, it seems to wild and uncomplimentary. But, it’s not like either the mango or lemon balm are super intense. The tea actually barely tastes like mango at all. It’s just a very smooth, roasty and semi-sweet base blend with a tad more general fruit flavour than I’d otherwise expect. And just, so smooth. You really taste that mix of date and carob in the best sorta way.

The Teeccino base is so strong, I’m surprised any fruit came through at all, but it does sound pretty good!

Sipdown (2532)!

I was hoping that without advent fatigue I might enjoy this blend more, but I still found it kind of dull tasting with one of the strongest notes being the pu’erh itself which was rather earthy in a dusty muddy sort of way. I wanted more cinnamon or clove intensity or a brighter citrus note and I just didn’t get those. Not bad tasting, but a more forgettable spiced orange profile in the vast sea of options out there…

Just logging to keep tally, but this was part of the big “restock” I did recently. I’m flying though those cans of kombucha though…

I had this last night and though I didn’t taste a lot of banana I thought the floral blueberry flavour and fresh green and orchid-like notes of the oolong were both quite smooth and sophisticated. Very easy drinking, and just switched up enough from feeling like a plain blueberry blend.

I’m gonna blame and thank the Hibiscus & Fennel kombucha from Gutsy that I’ve been drinking for leading me to pull out this blend because the balance between that darkly sweet anise/black licorice note (or fennel, for the kombucha) and a more tart berry flavour is REALLY similar. In fact, this almost feels like a loose leaf version of the kombucha except for the fact it also has a lot of really aromatic, fresh cardamom notes too.

This was a fine tasting cup, but the strawberry flavouring was very intense in both a floral and creamy sort of way. It felt a bit like the blend didn’t know what kind of strawberry tea it wanted to be and I think I’d have appreciated the simplicity of it more if it was all in with floral or all in with decadent or, even, tart and juicy strawberry. Didn’t love the mix as much…

drank Mango Boost by DAVIDsTEA

Iced Tea!

Another sweeter blend with really, really juicy mango and lychee notes – even with a couple years of age on the tea leaf! The earthy and mildly spicy ginger and vegetal matcha do a pretty good job of balancing the intense fruit flavours though. Not enough to necessarily create a perfect balance, but they’re present to the point where this is saved from being a cloying experience. More than anything it’s a reminded to me of how much I love the combo of mango and lychee. So fresh!

Friendly reminder that I do not numerically rate DAVIDsTEA blends as I’m currently employed there and it would be an obvious conflict of interest. drank Melon Drop by DAVIDsTEA

Cold Brew!

This is a very nostalgic blend to me, though certainly quite sweet and sugary too. I feel like it’s almost a mix of the big three melons: cantaloupe, watermelon, and honeydew. Leans honeydew the most, though! Maybe hints of kiwi and apple too. DT has had a lot of melon teas over the years, but this was my first and so, for better or worse, it’s the one I often benchmark others again even if it’s not my favourite.

Haven’t had this tea in ages but I found a tin of it the other day that I’d LONG forgotten about so it was a prime contender for my week of revisiting older DT blends…

The strawberry notes here were nicer than I’d remembered and I liked how the natural florals of the oolong base blended with them. However, the body was surprisingly quite thin in mouthfeel, and I felt like there wasn’t quite enough cream to really be a “strawberry and cream” blend. Mostly, I think, I just wished this was closer in blend style to the Peaches & Cream Oolong from this past year. That’s probably some bias coming through though, as I didn’t work on this blend but I did work on Peaches & Cream Oolong…

Cold Brew!

This was a very late night brew that I ended up steeping because I wanted something really quick and flavourful but super cold. I think my apartment building must have cranked the heat setting because even with my air conditioning going it was about 26C this evening which is kind of absurd for February. Especially when I usually try to keep my apartment hovering around 20C…

Anyway, this was good! More passionfruit than peach, in a very fun and Snapple-y kind of way. I love the sweet tang of this blend.

Profile

Bio

Hello! My name is Kelly, though many people in the tea community call me Ros or Roswell.

I am a mid-twenties tea addict, blogger, and all around nerd. I grew up in the Prairies, but a few years ago I relocated to Quebec to pursue a career with DAVIDsTEA in the tea industry! I’m still working on getting my French language skills down…

My first introduction to tea, in any form outside of instant and bottled iced tea, was about seven years ago when I happened to stumble upon DAVIDsTEA while looking for a birthday present for a friend! I tried their Birthday Cake rooibos blend, and I’ve been hooked on tea ever since! In those seven years; I was introduced to the online tea community, expanded my interest in flavoured teas to include a deep love and appreciation for straight teas and traditional brewing methods, got a tea themed tattoo, started reviewing teas, amassed a sizable tea and teaware collection, became a TAC certified Tea Sommelier, & even came full circle by beginning a career in the tea industry with DAVIDsTEA!

I consider myself a Jack of all Teas, and strive to have a knowledge and appreciation of all tea types, formats, and styles of drinking. I don’t like to feel boxed in to just being a “flavoured tea” or “straight tea” drinker – my expectations may vary depending on the type of tea or how it’s been processed/prepared but if it’s good tea, it’s good tea no matter how it’s been made!

You name it, I probably drink it- and I’ll absolutely try anything at least once.

My default method of preparation is hot, Western style, and straight – but I’m not opposed to additions if I’m in the right mood. If I ever add something to a tea or use a different method of preparation I will ALWAYS call it out in the tasting note though.

I like to listen to music when drinking tea, especially when I’m brewing a large pot at a time or steeping Gongfu. Often I curate very intentional tea and music pairings, and sometimes I share them here in my tasting reviews. Music is something that I find can deeply affect the experience of having tea.

I’m also one half of the “tea and fandom” podcast GeekSteep where, weekly, we discuss newly explored fandoms over tea as well as try to figure out the perfect tea to pair with each fandom. You can find us on Spotify and Apple & Google podcasts.

Favourite flavour notes/ingredients: Pear, lychee, cranberry, cream, melon, pineapple, malt, roasty, petrichor, sweet potato, heady florals like rose, hazelnut or walnut, sesame, honey (in moderation), and very woody shou.

Least favourite flavour notes/ingredients:
Lemongrass, ginger, strongly spiced profiles (and most Chai in general), mushrooms, seaweed, chamomile, stevia, saltiness or anything that reminds me too much of meat that isn’t supposed to taste like meat…

Currently exploring/obsessed with: Sheng from Yiwu, Yancha (Qilan in particular), anything with a strong sweet potato note. Also, I need to try ALL the root beer teas! Searching for a really good caramel flavoured blend, ideally with a black tea base.

Please contact me at the instagram account listed below if you would like me to review your teas.

Currently I’m employed in the tea department of the DAVIDsTEA head office. While I’m still sharing my own personal thoughts on new & existing DAVIDsTEA blends, I am no longer numerically rating them due to the obvious conflict of interest. Any comments expressed are a reflection of my own thoughts and opinions, and do not reflect the thoughts and opinions of the company. Any DAVIDsTEA blends you currently see with a numeric score were reviewed prior to my being hired there and have not been adjusted since becoming a DAVIDsTEA employee.
