Sipdown (588)!

Made this one in my tea press yesterday at the end of the work day to drink on the bus ride home. Still a really nice sweet and jammy tasting blueberry note like I observed the last time that I drank this one, but at the same time I was also getting a distinct note that I missed last time or that simply wasn’t present: anise. It was kind of weird, because I actually have a blueberry/anise blend that I made for myself – and this was comparable to that (though not exact) which definitely gave me some strange flavour note deja vu.

Kind of sad to be finished this one; it was a pleasant blueberry black tea with a lot of flavour packed into each sip! However, since I just bought like 300g of Blueberry Jam from DT I think I’m probably pretty damn set for blueberry black teas for the foreseeable future…

Toasty, spicy, warming goodness. I definitely still stand by my initial impression that this tasted more like a generic(ish) spice cake than any sort of carrot cake, but it was incredibly delicious and I’m glad that I stretched it out and was able to really fully appreciate each cup of it. Lots of cinnamon, but also nutmeg and clove. Beautiful, delicious clove.

I paid a lot more attention to this cup of tea than the last one of it that I had, and the result was a smoother and significantly tastier cup of sticky rice goodness. I’d feel really sad about this sipdown because this is such a wickedly good tea, but I also know I can get equally tasty from What-Cha year round so that makes finishing it off much easier.

I will ALWAYS need sticky rice teas in my cupboard though.

Currently drinking this one, but finding myself a little disappoint with it. It essentially tastes exactly like the Creme Caramel Flan oolong tea also made by AQTT. Probably similar combo of flavourings used in each blend? This just has a milder base to it and is a little more of straw-ish undertone.

I didn’t love the Creme Caramel Flan, so I’m not loving this either.

What’s a girl gotta do to get an awesome cup of caramel tea!?

Generic chocolate tea flavour without any definitely traits. Added a splash of milk for added creaminess. It’s fine – but I feel a slight sense of relief to have cleared it out of my cupboard.

Snuck in a cup, with milk, before this was sent off to Montreal.

It was fine, but continues to be SUPER distinctly more of a nut tea with almond/walnut characteristics outweighing the other flavours. It’s a perfectly fine tea, but I just need to make sure that I remember how nutty it is in the future so that I’m not pulling it when I’m actually craving caramel notes over nutty notes.

Finished off hot – which was not ideal, but I also don’t have any of my cold brew stuff unpacked or any ice in the house to make this iced instead. So it is what it is. This last cup was tinged with a grapey/winey sort of sourness, but the bulk of the profile was actually distinctly hibiscus. Which is fine. But also not why I find this blend so intriguing in the first place. Shrug.

If this was ever brought back to stores I’d pick up another (small) bag; but if this is also my permanent goodbye to this blend then I’m content with that also.

drank Horchacha by DAVIDsTEA

I had tacos delivered to the house on one of my last days off, and I realized while I was waiting for them to arrive that I actually still had my bag of Horchacha left and unpacked so I brewed up a big mug of it since it seemed like a fun and sort of thematically appropriate tea for the meal.

I am glad I bought more of this, though at the same time glad I didn’t over do it either. It’s got a really nice, rich creamy custard/vanilla quality and then a good balance of rice and cinnamon. Definitely feels true to Horchata/Rumchata overall; just a little less overtly sweet. Good accompaniment to tacos, for sure.

Gin & Lemonade, from last night.

I packed my very last box last night, and we shipped everything out this morning that was still in the house – so don’t worry, you wont hear me ranting about packing for a while now. In fact, if anything, the next “moving” related news will probably be flight/arrival day and then after that unpacking…

It feels weird; I have basically nothing with me now. Which is super strange…

Anyway; I need to finish off this gin because I don’t want to have to transport it on the plane (I don’t know if I even CAN take it on the flight?!) which means that at some point between now and flight day I’m probably gonna get at least a little smashed. I put a nice dent in the bottle drinking Earl Grey Gin lemonades last night though; it’s a nice pairing. Gin is NOT a sweet spirit so it definitely balances the sugary nature of the lemonade. Still compliments though. Plus, of course, bergamot is a kind of citrus so it just naturally goes well with lemonade.

Gong Fu!

One of the first pu’erh teas that I fell in love with; I was packing this into a box and I couldn’t resist holding off on packing this one until I was able to get in a session with it first. So, I paused my packing and went and did that first. Like, literally stopped what I was doing to go drink some tea first…

I think this is easily still one of the smoothest shou pu’erh teas that I’ve ever had, and even though I’m currently really into shou with distinctly woody notes to it and that doesn’t perfectly describe this tea it’s still very good. Sweet, and more fruity with stonefruit notes that lean more heavily to what I think of as a “darker” side of stonefruit elements; stuff like plums, overripe cherries or Bordeaux cherries and then other fruit notes like dates and figs. Those are the primarily profile of this pu, but there are sort of cocoa like top notes to it as well and sort of an undertone of more molasses/brown sugar undertones that add to the sweetness.

I steeped it eight times – the session only ended because it’s not a tea with lots of staying power to it; not because I was tired of it. Were this tea capable of lasting longer I would have brewed it longer; but it just dies out pretty easily.

Now it’s in a box, which is sad. This was just too good not to drink right away, though.

Profile

Bio

Hello! My name is Kelly, though many people in the tea community call me Ros or Roswell.

I am a mid-twenties tea addict, blogger, and all around nerd. I grew up in the Prairies, but a few years ago I relocated to Quebec to pursue a career with DAVIDsTEA in the tea industry! I’m still working on getting my French language skills down…

My first introduction to tea, in any form outside of instant and bottled iced tea, was about seven years ago when I happened to stumble upon DAVIDsTEA while looking for a birthday present for a friend! I tried their Birthday Cake rooibos blend, and I’ve been hooked on tea ever since! In those seven years; I was introduced to the online tea community, expanded my interest in flavoured teas to include a deep love and appreciation for straight teas and traditional brewing methods, got a tea themed tattoo, started reviewing teas, amassed a sizable tea and teaware collection, became a TAC certified Tea Sommelier, & even came full circle by beginning a career in the tea industry with DAVIDsTEA!

I consider myself a Jack of all Teas, and strive to have a knowledge and appreciation of all tea types, formats, and styles of drinking. I don’t like to feel boxed in to just being a “flavoured tea” or “straight tea” drinker – my expectations may vary depending on the type of tea or how it’s been processed/prepared but if it’s good tea, it’s good tea no matter how it’s been made!

You name it, I probably drink it- and I’ll absolutely try anything at least once.

My default method of preparation is hot, Western style, and straight – but I’m not opposed to additions if I’m in the right mood. If I ever add something to a tea or use a different method of preparation I will ALWAYS call it out in the tasting note though.

I like to listen to music when drinking tea, especially when I’m brewing a large pot at a time or steeping Gongfu. Often I curate very intentional tea and music pairings, and sometimes I share them here in my tasting reviews. Music is something that I find can deeply affect the experience of having tea.

I’m also one half of the “tea and fandom” podcast GeekSteep where, weekly, we discuss newly explored fandoms over tea as well as try to figure out the perfect tea to pair with each fandom. You can find us on Spotify and Apple & Google podcasts.

Favourite flavour notes/ingredients: Pear, lychee, cranberry, cream, melon, pineapple, malt, roasty, petrichor, sweet potato, heady florals like rose, hazelnut or walnut, sesame, honey (in moderation), and very woody shou.

Least favourite flavour notes/ingredients:
Lemongrass, ginger, strongly spiced profiles (and most Chai in general), mushrooms, seaweed, chamomile, stevia, saltiness or anything that reminds me too much of meat that isn’t supposed to taste like meat…

Currently exploring/obsessed with: Sheng from Yiwu, Yancha (Qilan in particular), anything with a strong sweet potato note. Also, I need to try ALL the root beer teas! Searching for a really good caramel flavoured blend, ideally with a black tea base.

Please contact me at the instagram account listed below if you would like me to review your teas.

Currently I’m employed in the tea department of the DAVIDsTEA head office. While I’m still sharing my own personal thoughts on new & existing DAVIDsTEA blends, I am no longer numerically rating them due to the obvious conflict of interest. Any comments expressed are a reflection of my own thoughts and opinions, and do not reflect the thoughts and opinions of the company. Any DAVIDsTEA blends you currently see with a numeric score were reviewed prior to my being hired there and have not been adjusted since becoming a DAVIDsTEA employee.
