I usually try not to drink DT blends at work that I know I own at home because that just feels like I’m not taking full advantage of my getting free tea while on shift, but I was really craving this one and so I made it iced even though I knew full well that I would be off work in just two hours and could make it at home then…

It was actually a lot more sour/tart than I remember it being last time I had it iced; just a really intense hibiscus note with supporting berry flavours. First few sips definitely had me making ‘pucker face’ but then I acclimated and just really enjoyed the overall profile I was getting. Mixed berry (blackberry, raspberry, elderberry, currant) notes, sour pucker lemon, and raisin all highlighted by that near abrasive hibiscus.

Noms.

Friendly reminder that I do not numerically rate DAVIDsTEA blends as I’m currently employed there and it would be an obvious conflict of interest. Any blends you see with numerical ratings were rated prior to my employment there. These reviews are a reflection of my personal thoughts regarding the teas, and not the company’s.

This one makes the best tea pop but I don’t love it on it’s own.

Sipdown (649)!

…not counting the two teas that are still stuck in the mobile cache, which cannot be added to my Steepster cupboard.

Anyway; this was a freebie sample from my most recent AQTT order. I would never think to get a tea like this from AQTT if I was ordering; it’s not that I doubt that it’s a decent tea but I just feel like they’re more the kind of company you order fancy flavoured blends from, not classics like English Breakfast. It’s actually a really nice EB though – really smooth and sweet, with an almost jammy strawberry note to it that really through me for a loop because of how unexpected it was. Some of the typical raisiny/malt sort of things going on too.

Not bad at all; actually really solid! Still not the kind of thing I’m going to be ordering from AQTT in the future though.

I’ve found the teas stuck on mobile can be fixed by clicking “edit this tea” and then save. It will revert back to normal.

Tea infused popsicles!

The store bought kind, this time, and not ones that I’ve made at home.

I know I tried a few of these a couple years back during the summer, and as far as I call I didn’t mind them but I didn’t find them wildly amazing either. Just an average taste, but with the high price part one that’s hard to justify. I’m giving them another swing though, this time with the mango and rooibos blend. It doesn’t taste bad; in fact I appreciate how natural the mango flavour is and the fact that the popsicle appears to rely more on the natural sweetness of the mango rather than added sweeteners. I also just completely CANNOT taste the added in tea, which is a thing that I had a problem with last time too – and if I’m going to shell out so much money for a tea flavoured popsicle then I want to be able to taste the tea!! Texture wise, this also just a little slimy when it start to melt – and I mean slimy in a way that is not typical of a popsicle.

I did buy another flavour, so maybe I’ll have more luck with that one.

This was so mesmerizing to look at once I’d poured it into my clear travel mug; it just looked like perfectly opaque black ink. I got so many comments on it too, both on the commute to work and then at work itself. So, so aesthetically pleasing to look at. Taste wise, it just tastes like slightly watered down hot chocolate so that aspect is really nice too. Such a good tea…

Latte!

There’s something that’s just a little bit too artificial in this for me to ever fully feel immersed in the flavour; not really a bad artificial quality but just an intense one that feels too obvious and out of place. That artificial taste has both sweetness, nuttiness, and a floral element – it’s something I’ve definitely experienced with multiple AQTT blends but I still haven’t put my thumb on exactly what it is. Apart from that, it’s a nice sweet and cream pistachio flavour that works REALLY WELL in the latte format. It feels decadent but still has a light quality to it. Reminds me a bit of buttercream at moments as well. I’d say that, for the most part, I really enjoyed it.

A VariaTEA share.

I haven’t actually looked at what’s in this blend at all, but I thought it tasted really strongly of coconut and marshmallows while not being overly sweet either. I have a hunch that this is probably only available around Christmas though, just based on the name, so I wont let myself get too attached for the moment. I thought it was really good, though! It’s rare that a tea so distinctly tastes like marshmallow.

YEP coconut, marshmallow, chocolate. I JUST read an e-mail from B&B and they mentioned a Christmas in July sale….

Scheherazade

There were Christmas blends in their subscription box this month, which I totally didn’t get until you said that. Just the usual Christmas Cake and Mulled Wine, though. I hope they have Jack Frost or White Christmas…

tea-sipper

haha, yeah that would be a bit weird to get a box of Christmas teas in July!

Cold Brew!

I still don’t think this one tastes ANYTHING like “Cream” at all – but it does make for a pretty scrumptious sweet and tangy cold brew/iced tea profile that just feels fitting for the summer. Like a sour plum/peach candy kind of thing. Actually, I know the perfect comparison!! I tastes like what I imagine a plum flavoured Sour Patch Kid would taste like, if that flavour was a thing…

I’m drinking a mug of this one right now, and it’s just the most comforting thing in the world right now – I swear, if I did RIGHT NOW drinking this tea I would be so content.

It’s got a mix of really soft but fudge-y chocolate notes and mellow plums, but perhaps more interesting to me is the fact that something in this tea is tasting SO STRONGLY of vanilla cake batter and I don’t know what it is! However, it just perfectly compliments the rest of the overall profile and is just decadent and velvety.

I LOVE THIS TEA.

Bought a ton of this because one day at work I was feeling really ambitious about making a “Mango Fruit Punch and Rum” soaked cake thing-er, but then I got home and realized I was far too tired to do that shit, so instead I just made a hot cup.

Maybe I’ll make the cake at a later date…

The hot cup was good; very sweet and tropical overall. This is a blend that you can CLEARLY tell has candied fruit in it. I’d say this tasted equally of orange and mango also, no strawberry. I feel like I’m having some tasting note ‘deja vu’ as well just writing this out. I mean, it really is a sweet, sugary and simplistic fruit flavour. I think that sweetness would work SO WELL for the rum cake idea…

I just need the motivation to do that.

Friendly reminder that I do not numerically rate DAVIDsTEA blends as I’m currently employed there and it would be an obvious conflict of interest. Any blends you see with numerical ratings were rated prior to my employment there. These reviews are a reflection of my personal thoughts regarding the teas, and not the company’s.

drank Bubble Tea by Custom

Lychee!

But not from my normal bubble tea place; instead I got this at a new place downtown after work with a coworker. We also ordered a few things off their dimsum menu – in particular I grabbed some sesame balls. This lychee bubble tea was a lot different than the lychee that I get from my normal spot – for starters it was a milk tea base, whereas the other place is more of a ‘slush’ without any milk used it it at all. The change made for a more mellow, subdued lychee flavour with this one compared to the very, very sweet version that tastes more like lychee juice. I think the subtly and creaminess with this one made it seem more like an adult version than a sugary juice-like one that would appeal more to kids. The other difference is that this one was topped with cut up lychee and passionfruit jellies, which tasted amazing as well.

I still find it pretty cool that I can get the same flavour of bubble tea from two different places and have such a wildly different experience.

Profile

Bio

Hello! My name is Kelly, though many people in the tea community call me Ros or Roswell.

I am a mid-twenties tea addict, blogger, and all around nerd. I grew up in the Prairies, but a few years ago I relocated to Quebec to pursue a career with DAVIDsTEA in the tea industry! I’m still working on getting my French language skills down…

My first introduction to tea, in any form outside of instant and bottled iced tea, was about seven years ago when I happened to stumble upon DAVIDsTEA while looking for a birthday present for a friend! I tried their Birthday Cake rooibos blend, and I’ve been hooked on tea ever since! In those seven years; I was introduced to the online tea community, expanded my interest in flavoured teas to include a deep love and appreciation for straight teas and traditional brewing methods, got a tea themed tattoo, started reviewing teas, amassed a sizable tea and teaware collection, became a TAC certified Tea Sommelier, & even came full circle by beginning a career in the tea industry with DAVIDsTEA!

I consider myself a Jack of all Teas, and strive to have a knowledge and appreciation of all tea types, formats, and styles of drinking. I don’t like to feel boxed in to just being a “flavoured tea” or “straight tea” drinker – my expectations may vary depending on the type of tea or how it’s been processed/prepared but if it’s good tea, it’s good tea no matter how it’s been made!

You name it, I probably drink it- and I’ll absolutely try anything at least once.

My default method of preparation is hot, Western style, and straight – but I’m not opposed to additions if I’m in the right mood. If I ever add something to a tea or use a different method of preparation I will ALWAYS call it out in the tasting note though.

I like to listen to music when drinking tea, especially when I’m brewing a large pot at a time or steeping Gongfu. Often I curate very intentional tea and music pairings, and sometimes I share them here in my tasting reviews. Music is something that I find can deeply affect the experience of having tea.

I’m also one half of the “tea and fandom” podcast GeekSteep where, weekly, we discuss newly explored fandoms over tea as well as try to figure out the perfect tea to pair with each fandom. You can find us on Spotify and Apple & Google podcasts.

Favourite flavour notes/ingredients: Pear, lychee, cranberry, cream, melon, pineapple, malt, roasty, petrichor, sweet potato, heady florals like rose, hazelnut or walnut, sesame, honey (in moderation), and very woody shou.

Least favourite flavour notes/ingredients:
Lemongrass, ginger, strongly spiced profiles (and most Chai in general), mushrooms, seaweed, chamomile, stevia, saltiness or anything that reminds me too much of meat that isn’t supposed to taste like meat…

Currently exploring/obsessed with: Sheng from Yiwu, Yancha (Qilan in particular), anything with a strong sweet potato note. Also, I need to try ALL the root beer teas! Searching for a really good caramel flavoured blend, ideally with a black tea base.

Please contact me at the instagram account listed below if you would like me to review your teas.

Currently I’m employed in the tea department of the DAVIDsTEA head office. While I’m still sharing my own personal thoughts on new & existing DAVIDsTEA blends, I am no longer numerically rating them due to the obvious conflict of interest. Any comments expressed are a reflection of my own thoughts and opinions, and do not reflect the thoughts and opinions of the company. Any DAVIDsTEA blends you currently see with a numeric score were reviewed prior to my being hired there and have not been adjusted since becoming a DAVIDsTEA employee.
