From 52teas

This was a suggestion from one of our customers, and I spent an hour digging through my email folders and searching our facebook page, but I couldn’t find the original suggestion anywhere, so I couldn’t put his or her name on the blend.

Anyway, when I first got the suggestion, I realized I was going to have to MAKE some Zabaglione to try, because not only had I not tried it before, but I had never HEARD of it before. Well after trying it (for those of you who never have, I would say it is something like a custardy (flavor, not texture) whipped cream with a hint of wine. After trying it, I was not at all sure that we would be able to make a tea that hinted of the complexity of Zabaglione, but after some trial and error, we now have…

I’ve had my eye on this one for awhile. With each 52teas order (and there have been many already!), this one never made it to the final purchase round. It’s jumped in my cart a couple times, but each time I end up taking it out in favor of a more unique/limited creation. So thank you to Awkward Soul for sharing a couple cups worth and satisfying my curiosity about this one.

This smells delicious before taking a 3-minute hot bath. After infusion, the tea liquor smells creamy and strawberryish, but less so than the dry leaf did. First few sips leave me a little underwhelmed… Added more rock sugar than I care to admit and it started to be a little tastier.

I do have the leaves resteeping in the fridge, so we’ll see if that turns out to be any different.

This isn’t something I’d purchase, but am glad to cross off another tea from my shopping list.

i hope our tastebuds are different as i’m pretty sure this one has finally made it to me.

Will Work For Tea

I hope so for your sake too! I’m pretty sure I burned off all my tastebuds in my 20’s when all I drank was coffee…

Sil

haha! I tihnk mine were frozen off with all the ice and slurpees i used to knock back all the time.

Azzrian

This is one of my all time top 5 favorite tea treats. Its like my comfort tea. I can’t imagine why you didn’t get more flavor out of it. How sad. :(

Will Work For Tea

Yeah, I know… this was my second attempt at liking it but it just didn’t do it for me. It is a little more flavorful as it cools I’m noticing.

Jillian

Have you tried it with milk? I found that really brings out the flavours of this tea.

Bonnie

I didn’t like this either.

Sipdown!

This is from a swap with Jackie T. I thought I had used it all, but there was enough left for a small cup. Yay!

This is one of my favorite fruit teas. Love the sweet strawberry and the creamy, custard-y flavors together. I think this tea was my introduction to 52 Teas. I must say, it left quite an impression!

JustJames

here’s an idea… maybe i’ll try my sample of this tomorrow!

Veronica

Do! Can’t wait to read what you think of it.

(unabashed gushing here :)):

This is the most perfect strawberry-flavored tea! I taste creamy custard, vanilla and strawberries (glorious strawberries!) all floating atop a delicious black tea base. The aroma is heaven in a cup!

I love it!

Great one more tea to add to the cupboard.

Oh man, I hope they still have some by the time I get back from Japan!

Gush away!

Stephanie

Oh noes, I’m showing that this is sold out on the website! :((( I’m not surprised, since it’s so great—but maybe we can start a petition or something to have Frank add it permanently?? :)

Ewa

nooooooes. I KNEW I should have caved when it first came out…

Can’t wait to see what you guys think of this one. It has been a HUGE hit here at the shop. Only five left!

Southern Boy Teas

I’m probably going to get my arm twisted into reblending this at some point, but it could be a while before I get the supplies in for it.

LiberTEAS

In the meantime, can I twist your arm to get you to reblend any of these:

~Persimmon Oolong
~Rocky Road
~Raisin Oolong
~Raspberry Chocolate RazzleDazzle
~Anise Biscotti
~Cherry Lime Rooibos

???

__Morgana__

And Chocolate Cheesecake Chai — I swear, I had the one left in my cart and when I went to check out it was out of stock!

Cinoi

Butter Pecan PLEASE!!!

Southern Boy Teas

Okay, in reverse order: We shouldn’t have been sold out of Butter Pecan. My mistake. (I really need to update our In-stock page again soon and double check our inventory, but we have 12 pouches on the shelf right now, so I just updated the site’s inventory.

Chocolate Cheesecake Chai: I have one pouch and enough tins to make six more pouches, so inventory updated to 7 on hand.

LiberTEAs, I think you just picked my all-time slowest selling blends. Seriously. I had Rocky Road for a year after we blended it. You know what kills me? The kids I have here in the shop are big fans of XYZ teas, and our online customers like ABC. I just never know what to blend. Let me think on it. Is there ONE of those that you want more than the others?

Cinoi

YAY!!! Purchasing now…

LiberTEAS

Frank, I guess I’m just like that – I tend to go for the more unusual things… I’m even like that when we go out to eat. My husband reads through the menu, finds the most unusual thing and then secretly guesses that will be what I choose to order. He then asks me what I want to order, and about 9 times out of 10, I choose that unusual thing he’s secretly guessed.

Anyways… if I were to choose just one of those on the list, I would probably choose the anise biscotti. That one just sounds yummy. But then, they all do. Rocky Road is my favorite ice cream, Cherry Lime sounds intriguing to me because that’s my favorite limeade from Sonic. I’m interested in the two Oolongs because I love Oolong.

Anyways… I always look forward to your new offering every week … even though I secretly curse you when you make something that I must try because then I must order. LOL

Shanti

Ooh, I really hope you guys reblend this—it sounds so good! Custard is my favorite food dessert. :)

Azzrian

I can personally attest that this tea is BLISSFUL!

I finished this tea up. This is definitely a good tasting tea, and I might consider buying this in the future. However, I have a lot of tea to go through still. The strawberry is perfect in this black tea. Great blend, and it is very good with milk and sugar.

After getting the steep time right I truly enjoyed drinking this tea. The strawberry was actually juicy. I think I may try to make this either traditional iced tea or cold brew, not sure yet. It was slighty sweet and I would have liked it to be more. There was a definate creaminess to it. The best way to describe it this… It is like a high class strawberries and cream dessert you may find a four star hotel made with the freshest berries and homemade cream.

this really has been a very odd tea weekend… i’ve suspended numerical pronouncements more times this weekend than i ever have in my entire loose leaf drinking history! that’s not what i’ll be doing with this one… but it will be in the ball park.

like frank, 52teas alchemist/magician/cookerer i did not know what zabaglione was. i thought i did, but i was wrong. in my head it was a tart with strawberries and mascarpone cheese. thus when i tasted it i had a moment of pause…

i have no idea what kind of a real world dessert/bacon/jello baker frank is, but in terms of tea he is pretty skookum! this is a man that i would be happy cooking a pancake and bacon breakfast for me! im sure he’d pile on the butter and syrup, although we might have a brief heated discussion to the effect of ‘no, i do not want the bacon IN the pancakes’, but seeing as we haven’t met i could be way off in that statement. (something about their website strikes me that frank may have a small obsession with the bacon food group is all, lol). ANYWAY, i was surprised when i didn’t taste pastry.

… … … i was chagrined. frank makes awesome tea pastry! and pancakes, and french toast, and danii (the plural of danish… yes, my invention). where was my pastry? my buttery, flaky, liquid version of a crispy pastry to go with my strawberries and mascarpone? and speaking of which, where was my mascarpone??? i wished briefly i were in a restaurant so i could have an aside with chef frank!

and then i looked a bit more closely at the picture on the label… it didn’t have mascarpone or pastry. i was beginning to feel an overdeveloped sense of responsibility (the word guilt is so overdone).

following frank’s example i posed the question to the all knowing dr. google: ‘what is strawberry zabaglione?’ here is the short version of the answer: http://www.google.ca/imgres?imgurl=http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/sites/bbcgoodfood.com/files/recipe_images/recipe-image-legacy-id—9921_11.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/6319/strawberry-zabaglione&h=400&w=440&sz=20&tbnid=qtarfLGZBW-0XM:&tbnh=90&tbnw=99&zoom=1&usg=__6jg8fMJBZcG7a53d4ZBzn6JZ9zA=&docid=X7wR9peJ8PooOM&sa=X&ei=YRvjUe7tDIiviQLgyIHgCg&ved=0CE4Q9QEwAw&dur=3799

the less codified answer is ‘strawberries and whipped cream. aw… i’m sorry frank! here i thought you had dropped the tea ball, and you didn’t.

this tea is absolutely strawberries and whipped cream. i think maybe frank could have swirled the whipped cream up into a fancier shape… like a swan or a 52, but i get that he might have been busy. the black tea background is there and nicely blended with the rest of the blend. there is nothing overpowering or any flavours that should be there that are not.

pedal to the medal: okay frank, the number you see is for your accomplishment, this tea is totally fancy strawberries and whipped cream… i don’t taste the little glass dish and silver spoon, but hey— i’m not sad about that.

HOWEVER if i were given the chance to buy the tea (yes i know it’s archived) i wouldn’t… simply because i also wouldn’t buy the dessert. i’m a pastry guy, lol.

I struggled with this one because of its name !
Zabaglione …typically italian…what’s zabaglione ?…hehe it seems to be what we call in French a Sabayon…Ok I know now what I’am going to drink ! yeah seems exiting now!
The dry leaf scent is absolutely wild strawberries to me. After steeping, this is a pleasant black tea base (not bitter) with creamy strawberries.

It’s a yummy dessert tea but it’s not a sabayon/zabaglione to me – I don’t get the typical sugared alcohol taste we get in a zabaglione, it’s quite different but good !

Not something I would stock but nice, thank you Azzrian for sharing :)

This was from the Zoomdweebies bestsellers sampler.

I am finally done the sampler. I am glad to have purchased it, being part of a kickstarter campaign and all, and also to have been able to try a bunch of new teas. But they are not teas I would have normally ordered, because I probably would not have liked them a whole lot anyway. So Hooray from trying them, and for also being done with them :)

I could have sworn that I have tried this one before from a swap, but I couldn’t quite remember if it was this exact one or not, and I couldn’t find a review from me hiding in all the other reviews.

This one is very similar to the blueberry zabaglione, except with strawberry. The strawberry is artificial tasting to me, but not in a bad way. Kind of like strawberry flavoured gum. I am finding the black base to be a bit bolder, slightly astringent. There is a strawberry taste, it is creamy. I am getting a slight bit of pastry taste.

I am wondering if I steeped this one too long as I am finding it quite a bit astringent which I don’t usually get with other 52 teas blends, but I steeped for the usual amount of time. Hmmm, who knows…

I’ve prepared a couple of pots of this, and have held off writing a tasting note, since I wasn’t getting what I thought I should be getting. The dry tea smell is heavenly. Cream, strawberries, tea, it is all there and it smells like it should taste wonderful. But my first couple of preparations didn’t. I didn’t really get any of the flavor notes, I’d get vague whiffs of strawberry and cream, but nothing like what the dry mix promised. And bitter. Clearly, my standard black tea preparation of boiling and a four minute steep wasn’t cutting it.

So this morning I set out, Brita pitcher in hand (okay, fridge), and looked over what Steepsteristas had to say about their preparation. According to most tasting notes, I was oversteeping. So step one was to cut the steep time to a mere 2.5 minutes. I admit, I was nervous. It seemed so little. Then I came across AmazonV’s tasting note. That recommended a scant 190-200 for temperature. At this point, I was game for anything. So I set up my Breville, filled my pitcher with filtered water (a first for my tea—normally it gets straight tap), and let the Breville do its thing.

This pot definitely has a much stronger scent than previous pots did. It is also significantly less bitter. It still isn’t there however. On the sip I get….tea. Yes, tea. Good tea, but tea. No fruit, no creaminess, just tea.

Is my palate broken? Is this thing on? This is not funny. Maybe I’m just not cut out for fancy flavored teas. This is very demoralizing. Maybe I should stock up on cheap bagged tea so that I’m not spending money on tea that I don’t really “get”.

Okay, hissy fit over. Onward and upward, right?

Frankly, I find the same issue with the black teas from 52 teas. Either I have to oversteep and they get bitter, or I lower the temp and get nothing of the amazing flavors I’ve been promised.

Try a flavored tea from DavidsTea or Butiki Teas. I have a large amount of Davids and would be more than happy to share, if you’re interested!

But yes, I’m beginning to find that 52teas just aren’t for everyone. Some people love them, and that’s great! But there are others (like myself) who just don’t care for the blends.

Camiah

Ooh, I’d love to try a few samples—thank you so much! I definitely want to try more Butiki teas, I really liked the samples of the items I’ve tried, even if I wasn’t much of a fan of the purple tea.

I think I’m coming to the same conclusion as you about 52teas. The more I think on it, the less I’m sure I like the teas themselves. I really love the smell of the tea, and I think that is what I responded to so strongly the first few pots I’ve fixed. I find myself increasingly frustrated that the tea only occasionally comes near the promise of the smell.

Daddyselephant

Sure, sure, have a look at my cupboard and let me know what you’d like to try. I’ll likely get lynched for saying this, but to me, 52teas is more about the gimmick than the teas. The black tea base he uses just doesn’t strike me as a quality base. I mean, DavidsTea has their fair share of gimmicks, but they’re built on a base of really good tea.

I’m such a fan girl. Anyway, let me know what you’d like to try and I’ll send them along to you! And if there are any you’ve been dying to try, but I don’t have, I can see if they have any in-store and pick up a few grams for you. What good is tea wealth if I can’t spread it around a bit, eh? Now I’ve got Hello Dolly in my head. “Wealth, pardon the expression, is like manure. It isn’t worth a thing unless you spread it around, encouraging young things to grow.”

…and now I sound uber snooty >.<

Camiah

I’ve started to realize with this morning’s Pancake Breakfast that I’m rather dissatisfied with the base tea. Incidentally, I find there is nothing wrong with being a fan girl when the thing you’re a fan of is worthy. After you suggested Davids Tea I looked at their website and am definitely going to invest in a few of their sample sets once I’ve reduced my stash somewhat. I’ll p.m. you with a few sample choices—you have some very delectable sounding teas. It is very difficult to choose just a few (since “all of them” seems rather obnoxious)! Also, I’m pretty sure its a law somewhere that anyone who uses the word “manure” in any comment cannot be uber snooty. One negates the other :)

Is there anything in my small stash you’d like to try? The Andrews & Dunham holiday blend is really good, and if you liked the blueberry purple tea, I can send you some of the regular purple tea I bought. Let me know if you’d like to try anything!

Daddyselephant

To be quite honest, I’m trying to bust down my stash a little, so how about I take a rain check on trying something from your stash? Also, if you’re looking to sample what DavidsTea has to offer, may I recommend looking into their Advent/Countdown calendar? It’s 24 teas for $34.50, and contains some of their best teas. I have one and I am so, so, so ready for December to be here so I can start opening it!

I believe DavidsTea is totally worthy of my fangirling, and I’ve started so many people down the road of tea love with them. When we stopped by to visit my brother in NY a few months ago, I took him a Perfect Mug and a bag of teas from my stash. He fell in love, and in the time it took us to drive home (we’re only an hour and a half away), he’d already placed an order with them online. He’s coming up to visit in December, and we are going on a tea crawl of Toronto, starting (of course) with my favorite DavidsTea. My sister in law as well, raised on Red Rose bags (essentially Lipton), now has a travel press and a cupboard of DavidsTea. I just introduce people to the teas, though. They really sell themselves.

Gah, my wife calls me a tea pimp and I’m proving it once again XD
