Thanks to Azzrian for the idea for this blend. I actually think my wife is a little upset she didn’t think of it first. She makes an awesome gooey butter cake.

My wife is fond of telling people that she has no idea how I manage to make such amazing teas since my cooking skills are more or less limited to ramen noodles and microwave popcorn. Likewise, I have no idea what sort of magic she employs in creating a gooey butter cake. Yes, I could look at one of several recipes for gooey butter cake, but I prefer to believe it is magic, because a gooey butter cake (for those of you who have never had one), is one of those beautiful things that shouldn’t be discussed in such muggle terms as a recipe. It’s way better to have someone make one for you and assume they possess magical gifts.

So, this evening, I am here with a big tumbler full of iced gooey butter cake tea, and it is definitely, buttery, sweet, cakey, and just all around gooey-butter-cakey. It kind of reminds me of the Pancake Breakfast, it has the same depth of character, but of course it’s not pancakes, it’s gooey butter cake. Honestly, if I hadn’t just spent so long looking at images of gooey butter cake and writing about gooey butter cake, this might very well satisfy my craving for gooey butter cake, but the truth is, I’m seriously hoping my wife reads this and decides to make me a gooey butter cake. [I love you baby.]

Drinking this right now and I love it. I love the way the butter flavor works with the black tea. When it comes to butter or cheescake flavors in teas Frank is always spot on! Really like this one. :-)

I love the creamy lemon flavor from this tea especially coming from a black tea base. Most teas pair lemon myrtle with the lighter greens and white teas. There was a slight bitterness/astringency- more than my palate prefers so I will adjust steep time to 3 min. Sometimes those 15 to 30 sec make all the difference.

AJRimmer Advent Day 9

AJRimmer included the sweetest little notes with each tea in the calendar! This one had a warning that the flavor doesn’t really match the name. After trying it for myself, I have to agree. No butter or cake here for me, just a pleasant, natural lemon flavor. I’m not sure how to rate this one. I actually quite enjoyed it for what it was! But if I’d been expecting butter cake it would have been a letdown.

Ooh, I haven’t made that recipe for a long time. May have to remedy that over the holidays!

Hmm this one doesn’t really taste like its name. I get some light flavoring, but nothing that points me to cake really. It tastes decent, just very mildly flavored, maybe a bit of lemon. I tried it both warm and cold, and I’m really not finding that cake flavor. I had the resteep with no milk, and I actually enjoyed it more like that. It has a lovely, high quality lemon flavor that was mostly covered up when I had this with milk. The second time I had this tea, it was a lot less special for some reason. Just a pretty plain lemon black tea.

I couldn’t remember if I had tried this tea before and, truthfully, after steeping it I did do a bit of a double take and recheck the ingredients because it was just so different from anything I would have expected this to taste like. It’s good, though! I find the flavours really reminded me of an old DAVIDsTEA blend called Honeybee. That tea was a mate and this is a black, but both have this really lovely light fruity sweetness that sort of combines a lemon/lemon myrtle type of flavour with bright notes of honey. Refreshingly sweet while still being playful. I think I expected a gooey butter cake profile to be more dense/thick with a more coating sweetness and, of course, a buttery element. So, a mismatch for me in terms of flavour direction but a win in terms of overall flavour.

Sipdown 152-2021

I ended up not loving this as much as I hoped I would. It’s a nice creamy lemon tea, but doesn’t really read as gooey butter cake to me.

Sipdown from last month…trying to catch up. I enjoyed this one but it wasn’t over the top. I think i prefered it to pankcake breakfast though…maybe because of the hint of lemon?

G is for…Gooey Butter Cake

Thank you Roswell Strange for sending me the subscription boxes that this came in! I’m really excited to try this one and am so happy it happened to be included.

I’m not sure what I expected from this but it’s not what I’m having in this cup. It’s buttery, I think but it’s also not cake-y like I expected. I’m also getting less sweetness than expected. Lemon and the black base are also coming through and that’s making this more tea than cake. Is that bad? Not necessarily but I really looked forward to cake.

AJRimmer

The name of this one sounds SO good.
