On the fifth day of Christmas, 52teas gave to me Caramel Pumpkin Cheesecake black tea.

(Backlogging. 3 days ago. Tuesday morning.)

I opened this packet and thought it was a chai. lol. I was so wrong. For this tea, I could taste the caramel definitely, the pumpkin some, and a creaminess that might have been cheesecake. It was a good cup. Second steep was too weak. Would not resteep in the future.

2nd steep: 20+ mins.

Pumpkin flavors just taste so much more amazing with a little bit of sugar. It works especially for this one given the other two flavors in here! The spices are a bit strong, but I think that’s just like the nature of pumpkin teas and it’s nothing a sweetener can’t fix.

Just a little milk does an amazing bit of work on the cheesecake too. It seriously tastes like I made a latte despite the fact I added just a splash of milk. This is an awesome dessert blend, sweet and pumpkiny, and most definitely rich.

I almost want more but I want to not have anything more with caffeine tonight.

I’ve had the 52teas Caramel Cheesecake for over a month now and still haven’t logged it. I don’t know why, it’s good, it’s just… exactly what I expected, and nothing more. So I was really on the fence about this one, since it’s essentially the same blend with pumpkin flavor. I ended up getting it (okay, the bf ordered it since he’s in love with Caramel Cheesecake) when it was briefly reblended. Best tea-related decision I’ve made in a while!

This has all the flavor elements you’d expect: spicy pumpkin pie flavor, rich caramel, and an undertone of tangy cheesecake. A lot of people complain about not tasting the cheesecake on the 52 cheesecake blends, but that’s never been an issue for me (except in the Apricot one, where it seemed to be blatant for everyone else haha). Here I think it’s especially prominent: really creamy, and with a nice tang. The pumpkin flavor kind of dominates, adding a decadence to the cup. Combined with the caramel this is an over the top comfort tea. I tried it hot and iced (I know, pumpkin tea iced, I have strange tastes!) and both ways I actually felt full after a cup with no added sugar or milk. This is a rich tea! But delightfully so: often the problem with dessert teas is that you still, you know, want pie after drinking them. But not here! It’s desserty perfection, but not for the faint of heart. It took me 2 hours to finished the iced cup…. yeah, it’s that rich.

Kittenna

Hahaha, I had to laugh at how you said you could taste the cheesecake in most of the 52teas blends except apricot – before even reading the next few words, I was all “but that’s the only one I can taste it in”! :P

CHAroma

“Often the problem with dessert teas is that you still, you know, want pie after drinking them.” Hahahaha!! So true!

Alphakitty

@Kittenna: I think sometimes my tastebuds are wonky since I always get the cheesecake except in that one darn blend. Now that it’s had time to sit I really need to give it another shot!

@CHAroma: It really is! It’s all nice and well to have a cup of tea that tastes like pie, but when I want something REALLY dessert-y I just go for hot chocolate. Or now, this tea, since it’s just as rich (but way less calories).

Oh December… The Sunday of months… The month that flies by and is full of tasty food, beautiful decorations and lots of good company. Sadly, it is so busy and goes so fast, that quite a few things go unappreciated! Tea gives me a chance to sit down sip and enjoy the moment! I am trying to have as much of my seasonal teas as possible before the first day of 52teas 12 days of Christmas! I am so excited for it!

This tea had so much hype around it, that I couldn’t wait to try it. It took my a while, but I have finally got around to it. It really deserves the hype! I loved the pumpkin cheesecake last year, and I love it with the caramel just the same!

The dry tea smells spicy and seasonal. I get a hint of pumpkin and a bit of creamy caramel as well. The leaves are small and dotted with yellow petals. Perfect to fit in with the now past Thanksgiving colors.

Once brewed, the dark liquor makes my mouth water with the promise of tastiness. Unsweetened it is not quite as smooth as I would like it to be. Sweetened, it is delicious. Just the right amount of spice to not completely overshadow the tea flavor. The caramel hides out towards the end of each sip, hanging out with the hint of pumpkin. A deliciously achieved tea. I am really happy I got to try it!

Now… To wait until the first day to open my first mystery 12 days of Christmas tea… :)

Jackie O

“Tea gives me a chance to sit down sip and enjoy the moment!” I love this, we should all try to live this out as much as possible especially during the holidays. I saw something recently on Pinterest that says “Stop the glorification of busy.” and this reminds me to appreciate those not busy moments when my only commitment is to pick a tea to treat myself to and enjoy every sip. Thanks!

Sil

I hate when you wake up a couple hours before your alarm goes off and can’t fall back asleep. I laid in bed for a good 45 minutes before just giving in and getting up.

Last night I brought home a new member of the family. Her name is Hadley and she is a beautiful little rat I was able to adopt from work. You see, they got a shipment of babies in and they just threw the new babies into a cage with Hadley and other rats for sale. It’s standard when newcomers enter an established pack of rats for the newcomers to get picked on a little. She was just showing them who was boss, but apparently everyone agreed that she was some sort of spawn of satan or something and so they took her out and put her in the back room in isolation. She was doomed to be sold a single rat because she was so “aggressive”. I couldn’t leave the poor thing there…rats are extremely social animals who do best in large groups. I just couldn’t imagine that little girl spending her whole life alone.

So after much debate and 5 days of losing sleep I finally brought her home. I think she’s going to be really happy here. I can’t wait until she settles in and I can introduce her to my crew. She’s going to have a long happy friend filled life.

Hadley and I are having some peaceful bonding time together this morning since my body had plans for me that didn’t include sleeping until my alarm went off. We’re watching the news and she’s exploring the couch while I enjoy a cup of caramel pumpkin cheesecake. I swear this tea gets better and better every time I have some. I’m sad to say my bag is starting to look a little slim. I’ll be sad when this one is gone, but tis the season to finish off the pumpkin flavored things! I’m going to bump the rating up a touch because I really have been enjoying this one lately.

Today has been a day. The mail brought something rather confusing, but, fortunately, the issue was resolved very satisfactorily. Anyway, it kind of threw me for a loop, and I haven’t been able to get back on track since. I’m hoping that another cup will get me focused again.

This is good. Yummy! Even better than last year’s pumpkin cheesecake from 52Teas – because this has caramel in it! Yummmm! That seems to be one of the ways to make something good even better. Add caramel. Or add chocolate. Next year, maybe Frank will make a chocolate caramel pumpkin cheesecake tea around this time of year. Also good would be a praline pecan caramel pumpkin cheesecake. Or pumpkin chocolate chip cookie tea. I asked for that last year, and haven’t gotten it yet. Hey Frank! I want a pumpkin chocolate chip cookie tea!!! And now that I’ve said it, I remember that I happen to have some pumpkin chocolate chip cookie dough in the fridge waiting to become freshly baked cookies. I should probably do that after I’m finished writing this.

This is absolutely yummy. A good amount of pumpkin-y flavor, tangy cheesecake, a hint of buttery pastry, and caramel. So good that it really reduces me to the simplest words: yum yum yum yum yum!

Kittenna

I like the idea of adding chocolate next year! Chocolate caramel pumpkin cheesecake. But… what to add in 2014?! Chocolate praline pecan caramel pumpkin cheesecake? Haha…

KittyLovesTea

I like the idea of chocolate caramel banana pumpkin cheesecake :)

This is my favorite pumpkin tea, and that is saying a lot because fall flavors are my fav and I love DavidsTeas pumpkin chai. If it was more readily available I would drink it more. It makes a fantastic morning latte, and is the perfect pumpkin tea for all year long sipping.

This is the new one, as of Oct 2015.

I really like the steeping instructions on the bags (thank you!) but I think it’s interesting how they all recommend 1 tsp per 12 oz, instead of the more typical 1 tsp per 6-8 oz. I usually use 2 scant tsp per 12 oz, and 2 full tsp per 16 oz. Silk Road in Victoria takes everything even further and recommends 1 tsp per 16 oz. Which is honestly not enough. I mean, I suppose it’s more hydrating, but there’s not enough caffeine!

Anyways. This tea. I think I had it before, and it was just OK. The base tea was never my favourite, but I have to say that the new base is really quite nice. A little lighter than my go-to CTC or Assam, but quite nice.

Opening the bag, it smells sweet and cakey. Steeped, it smells… I’m not really sure. Definitely tea. Sweetness which must be the caramel. A little spice I think? I just ate a peanut butter cookie so my sense of taste is feeling really weird. Sorry.

Anyways, I’m glad I got this one. If it was a favourite, it’s definitely worth checking out again. If you were kinda meh about it the first time, the base is better. I’m not sure it’s my favourite flavour, but I’m glad I grabbed a sample pack. :)

Okay, I totally get the concept of various different sorts of cheesecake. I find it an amazingly appealing concept to be honest. I likes me some cheesecake, yes I do indeed, but I’ve only ever been used to a plain white one decorated with a bit of fruit, so actually flavouring one with fruits and whatnots is a whole new concept for me.

I approve, oh yes I do.

But.

Pumpkin? sigh I have had a number of pumpkin flavoured teas in the past, and not a single one of them have actually been something I can look back at and think ‘gosh, how nice!’ Pumpkin flavoured things have consistently had some sort of soapy flavour to it and I’ve never really been able to work out whether it’s a pumpkin aspect or me having had bad luck.

Caramel, however. Caramel is a very positive addition to the mix. Even if the pumpkin doens’t work out for me (again), perhaps it’ll be weighed up by the caramel.

On the whole though, these cake-y flavoured blends aren’t really the ones that appeal to me the most, and therefore it wasn’t that big a deal for me to reach the decision to declare 52teas generally Out Of Bounds. (Note, this has nothing to do with Frank or his company and everything to do with the fact that I consistently get to pay customs and imports fees on his parcels. I imagine this would be true no matter where I the US I bought from, and it’s really annoying to have to pay for my tea TWICE this way. With this Christmas box the fee was actually slightly more than the price of the tea. It has kind of stopped being funny and I’m not made of money.) This Christmas box is the frivolity I allow myself when it comes to this company.

Now, I have to admit I forgot to smell the leaf before brewing but afterwards it gave me a truly bizarre aroma indeed. Mulled wine? Mulled wine! Mulled wine and caramel pumpkin cheesecake has nothing at all in common that I can think of. Husband agrees with me on the mulled wine note and suggests it might have something to do with it smelling of cloves. I find myself rather wishing I had a glass of glögg now…

The flavour doesn’t give me this association, though. At first when it was at its hottest, I got a fair bit of caramel right at the front of the sip, followed by something rather subdued and vaguely recognisable as pumpking, but without that soapy note. What a relief, I thought.

Then the doorbell rang and the cup of tea got a short cooling off period while we dealt with that. It was the cat-sitter who’s looking after Charm and Luna over Christmas stopping by to pick up a key. I’d completely forgotten she was going to come, so I had to search in a mild panic for the stupid key because I couldn’t remember where I put it the last time. I found it though.

So coming back the cup, I find that it had developed a bit as tea are wont to do. Now there’s only a wee bit of caramel, mostly on the swallow, and a WHOLE LOT of soapy tasting pumpkin.

sigh

I can’t say I can find anything cheesecake-y in here at all though. Maybe a smidge of something that could be cream cheese, but that’s really it. I wouldn’t have thought of cheesecake on my own at all. Just pumpkin and caramel.

I’m feeling a bit torn as to how to rate this. While it was all hot and fresh and the caramel was the strongest note, I thought it was surprisingly good. At this point where there has been a completely role reversal, I’m less convinced. I think I’m going to give it around 70-ish and make it a compromise between the two.

Frolic

If you can get your hands on Frank’s caramel cheesecake from earlier this year it might be more to your liking. It’s all the goodness of this tea minus the pumpkin. I’d offer to share but I only have a couple of cups of the precious left and it’s one of my true loves but I"m sure someone else out there might have some.

LiberTEAS

I am sad that you have such difficulties with customs, and I totally understand why you wouldn’t want to order when you end up paying enormous customs fees.

However, since I am a subscriber to 52Teas and therefore end up getting each of the teas, if ever there is a tea that you’d like to try, please feel free to PM me and ask … maybe if I note on the package that it is a “gift” of tea … there will be fewer customs fees?

This is another 52 teas blend that I have been dying to try for a while now. Coming into autumn and in October especially there is never a better time to eat or drink anything with pumpkin in. I adore pumpkin and anything halloween related (it’s my favourite holiday) and I knew I would give in to temptation when I saw this for sale.

Raw this is a nice black tea with the odd sunflower petal dotted about that gives it a nice gold and black appeal. Smell wise it’s strongly like pumpkin spice (clove, cinnamon, cardamom all in one) which for me can either be hit or miss as I am not keen on clove or cardamom.

Brewed and left unsweetened and uncreamed this smells even stronger and more chai spice like but with added earthy tones from the pumpkin and black tea. There is also sweetness already there which could be a mixture of pumpkin and cinnamon to give it that natural sweet yet spicy smell.
Being a black tea this is dark brown in colour.

First few sips bring out super sweetness from the caramel with a pumpkin after taste. The sweetness is very surprising considering it’s unsweetned, I would say there is no need for any sugar at all as this is sweet enough.
The caramel itself is a dark caramel taste thanks to the black tea but it’s not bitter at all and works to it’s advantage.
I can also taste the spices now (they smell stronger than they taste). Unfortunately there is no cheesecake type taste at all, it’s really more of a caramel pumpkin taste. Not enough to cure the urges of cheesecake.

Half way down the caramel is much stronger and it slips lovingly down my throat and leaves a warming spiciness behind with oodles of pumpkin flavour. As far as this goes with regards to being a pumpkin flavoured tea I would say it’s very nice but it still doesn’t beat Davids Tea’s Pumpkin Chai and it’s about equal to Butiki Tea’s Pumpkin Creme Brulee.

Maybe next time I will add a bit of milk to this and see if the creaminess brings anything out but for now it’s a pleasant autumn drink and it’s going down a treat.

This is going to sound weird, but you should think about trying this as a cold brew! It really brings out the cheesecake.

KittyLovesTea

Thank you I will try that for my next steep. I’m not sure how a cheesecake tea would taste as my mind just cannot meld the two together so I have a feeling that the lack of cheesecake taste could also be from myself. The next half decent weathered day here in the UK and I shall give it a go.
