Our Tea of the Week for the Week of
April 8, 2013

There really IS such a thing as a pineberry. Supposedly it’s a strawberry that tastes like a pineapple and looks like the image on our label, which to me looks kind of like what marshmallows would look like if marshmallows were a fruit.

So, of course OUR take on the Pineberry is probably nothing like what a real Pineberry tastes like, which I imagine not very many people would know anyway, but rather what I imagine a Pineberry SHOULD taste like.

I think it should taste like sweet, golden honeybush with accents of pineapple, strawberry and marshmallow—so I created this blend with real freeze-dried pineapple and strawberry bits and marshmallow root. It’s a little different, but then, so is 52teas.

Tea pop seems to be all the rage right now (or so Davids tells me) and while I’ve been doing this for a long long time (adding carbonation to iced tea…and gin…so I guess they came up with not adding gin….) it has inspired me to do it more. This was my first of two tea pops today (the other is steeping as we speak.

STEP ONE, I could brewed this mofo over night in my takaya pitcher. STEP 2, I put it in my travel mug.

SIDE NOTE: So I love love love the leak proof mug davids has come out with this summer, but frigola I have had the worst luck with them. My first one split in the bottom for no reason, so I returned it, and as I was walking out with a new one I saw it had a scratch on it!!! So I had to go back again, and felt like a complete B. Then my dog knocked #3 over when it was on the ground and it cracked. So I have on tumbler #4………. luckily davids has a great return policy and if they ever change it I will cry.

Anyways on to step THREE! Add ice. Step FOUR add club soda that has been sitting around for almost two weeks but is still kinda carbonated. STEP FIVE MARSHMALLOW STRAWBERRY TROPICAL MAGIC TIMES!!!! I honestly was not impressed when I first had this one but DAMN something happened today and it was oh so delightful.

This tea is fascinating. I just received it in the mail yesterday so perhaps I should’ve waited a bit longer to try it? I also don’t think I’ve come even close to perfecting being able to taste the flavours through the honeybush base, but I’m working on it.

I’m getting a subtle creaminess from the marshmallow root and mostly a strawberry taste aside from that. I’m not completely sure how I feel about the taste. I think I’ll let it sit out a few more days before I try again.

Ordered this to help me get through Hell Week Part 3: The Salvation. Man am I glad I did. It came right when I needed it, and I haven’t left the dorm without a bottle of this iced since.

Now, I have yet to try this hot, but as an iced tea with just a touch of sweetener, man is it good. The fruity flavors play great with the marshmellow. Almost like some sort of strawberry soft candy. I make it as a cold brew because the ice machine in my dorm is broken. Unsweetened you get mostly honeybush, but it really wakes with the slightest bit of sugar. I have just enough left to try a cup of it hot, but really, this is probably the kind of tea that’s best iced.

On an unrelated note, why are 52 teas pouches so small. :,C

I have enjoyed this tea, but now I am drinking the last cup. I have preferred it cool or chilled. To me this tastes like a pineapple honeybush with a touch of marshmallow and strawberry.

The flavors in this tea really blend well together. If I focus, I can pick out the individual elements: strawberry, pineapple and marshmallow root. However, they blend into a new flavor all together: a fruity candy-like taste that isn’t overpowering. Could it be what a pineberry tastes like? Dunno. But it tastes like a dessert treat that I definately want to drink again! Yum!

I can’t say I have had the pleasure of trying this interesting hybrid fruit but it doesn’t take away from this unique blend. The strawberry flavor was at the forefront with a juicy pineapple and marshmallow finish. Using both the pineapple and honeybush base was a very clever move as it gave just the right level of sweetness and avoided any tartness that I find too often with strawberry teas. As I was enjoying this blend I kept thinking this flavor reminded me of something and then it hit me – Strawberry Peeps! This tea has all the flavor of these addictive little guys but NONE of the calories or guilt. :)

Wow, sounds awesome! If only I liked honeybush. *Sigh.

Backlog:

I’ve never tasted a pineberry before. Before I read the announcement of this tea, I didn’t even know there was such a thing as a pineberry. A pineberry to me sounds like a whackadoodle name for a pine cone to me.

I’ve never seen pineberries in the grocery store before, and I don’t know that I’ll ever find this “berry” … but I do like Frank’s recreation of the pineberry … even if he sort of invented what he thought a pineberry should taste like for this blend. It would be interesting to try a pineberry and compare it.

But since I don’t know how to find a pineberry, I’ll settle for this tisane. I liked it. Really tasty.
