From 52teas

I had soooo much fun last week with the malted genmaicha, and after hearing several people ask why we didn’t make it a chocolate malt, I decided we should do a chocolate malt tea this week. Here it is, our Malted ChocoMaté!

This is roasted yerba mate with organic cacao nibs and all natural chocolate and malt flavors. It is one delicious energy kick!

Delicious! I received this from Meghann Thank you so much!

It smells DELICIOUS! It smells nutty, chocolate-y, mildly earthy, and warm. The liquor is a light brown. I added sugar and tastes great! With milk, it is even better and creamier. Very good. It left a strange taste in the back of my throat, but I think it is because of what I had for lunch – sandwich with some strong onions in there!

Overall, very good flavored mate.

Yay, it came today! Tearing the bag open… Oh my. I can see the nibs and it smells like… Like a delicious artisan dark chocolate bar. I could barely wait for the water to heat. It steeps to a beautiful dark amber liquor. And the smell… Like melting chocolate, dark chocolate, with that faint hint of bittersweetness and the tang of the malt behind it.

Yet the taste is even better than the smell! I don’t know how these guys do it with these flavors, but the supporting base is so mellow and smooth. This reminds me faintly of Godiva liqueur, only not sweet. I’d go into overload if I actually put sugar in this. I seriously need to be alone with this. Bravo yet again.

(I have a KitchenAid mixer with attachments, and I think this spring, this would make some DAMNED incredible ice cream if I simmered it in the cream.)

I had the same reaction when I opened my package!:) Glad you liked your order as much as I did mine.

fcmonroe

That ice cream idea sounds really good!

Cofftea

I thought of ice cream w/ the mayan chocolate chai. Yummm…

I have a couple of requests that we reblend this tea. Anyone else interested?

I normally don’t like malt, but I’d be definitely interested in giving it a try if the timing was right.

Meg

I like it, the malt was more of an afternote, not anything that blotted out other flavors.

From the Zoomedweebies bestsellers sampler pack.

I do not like the smell of mate, so I wasn’t sure about this one when I opened the package. There was definitely a dark chocolate smell as well.

This one tastes not too bad once I got past the mate smell. There is a slight roasted mate flavour to the tea but it is not the dominate flavour. I am getting a dark chocolate taste, like 40% dark. There is a malt flavour. I love malt. I think this one may have been better as an iced tea or maybe mixed into a smoothie. I just really want a chocolate milkshake now.

Hmmm, I thought I had logged this when I first bought it. Ooops! I guess this will be the overall note having finished off the last of the bag this morning.

You know those chocolate-covered malted milk balls – Whoppers? I HATE them – they are gross to me. Maybe it was the chalkiness of the malted milk ball, or just the way the malted milk ballI tasted, but I was sure I didn’t like malted anything because of them.

I honestly couldn’t tell you why I picked up a bag of this. I guess it was just another shot at trying something that I knew I liked (chocolate and roasted yerba maté). At worst I figured I could trade it out. But this little bag of chocolate malted milk goodness really grew on me. It’s a nice change from the regular non-chocolate black teas I have in the morning. And of course, the last cup of the bag had to be the tastiest!

Sadly I did not take time to measure anything as I was in a rush to get out the door (which is usually the case). I did have this with a bit of milk and rock sugar – this is my method of choice for this tea.

I may be picking up another pouch of this later.

Whoppers were one of the FEW candies I didn’t like either.

I’ve wanted to try this but I didn’t want to commit to a pouch. Good thing, because I’m not sure I like roasted mate too much. But I mean this is my second roasted one, most of the ones I’ve liked have been green. So I’ll give it at least a few more tries before I give up on it.

It smells good, it reminds me of coffee and Whoppers together. That might be pretty good. I let it steep for about 10 minutes and tried it. I wasn’t getting much other than mate, so I added cream and agave. Now it’s like warm chocolate milk, but it’s just not chocolatey enough for what I want right now. I’m actually not even sure why I just want chocolate so much. Guess I should just eat it instead, huh?

I think next time I’ll try a legitimate latte with it. I picked up like half a pound of cacao nibs today for like $1.25 so maybe I’ll throw a few more in too.

Thanks for this one, Will Work For Tea!

At first sip, I thought, oh I can only taste mate, not chocolate, but even before that sip was over BAM chocolate appeared (guess I just gotta be patient!) Now, with every sip I am enjoying the intertwining flavors of mate and chocolate. I got this as a sample from Amy oh (THANK YOU!) so it was just labeled chocomate. I knew there was something different about the chocolate flavor but it wasn’t until I looked it up on here that the malt part clicked.

I also love that this is a mate because I’m hoping for good caffeine out of it! Now that I love it, with my luck, it’s never going to exist again!

Thank you, Frank, for making my morning after a night of bad sleep a million times better, and thank you amy for giving me enough for another pot sometime :)

Another sample from Ricky—I was looking forward to this after reading all the glowing comments. Prepared with milk and sugar as recommended, and it is—just MEH—a bit of chocolate flavor, a hint of chocolate aroma. I’m glad to have tried it, but I won’t be repeating the experience once the sample is gone.

One wish I had for this tea would that it would be more “malty”..

PattiM

i wasn’t getting any malt and very little chocolate—I had hoped it would be creamier as well for a truly decadent experience.

Lori

It is much , much better if you add sugar and milk..

Definitely lowering the rating on this today. It’s not that I don’t enjoy it, it’s just that I’m liking it less than my first try. It’s chocolate, but I’m detecting a kind of artificial note that I’m not fond of. It’s tasting kinda gross to me now.

Smells Great! Looking forward to trying this.
After steeping though i was a little disappointed. Really am not getting a alot of chocolate in this. I added some milk and sugar to try and bing it out. As it’s cooling i’m getting a little more aftertaste of cocoa but not really the chocoalte i was looking for.

I agree… but then again I’ve seen people steep this 8-10 min. Maybe that would be better? Do you have luck sweetening chocolate teas? I find it dumb downs the chocolate instead of amping it.

mpierce87

I think this tea is much better at higher steeping times – give 7-9 minutes a try.

Elyse

idk this is my first chocolate tea. thanks for the tips

Cofftea

I’d say try it clean, then milk, then milk and sweetener (increase steeping times by a min when adding milk, maybe 2 when adding milk and sweetener).

mpierce87

Also, this tea is more of a dark chocolate/cocoa taste than milk chocolate, so that may be why it isn’t what you’d expect for a chocolate tea.

Okay so my first order from 52 Teas arrived and I rip it open and smell this wonderful deep dark chocolate Mate smell. I boil some hot water and let it go for about a 5 minute steep and to my surprise the liquor is not very dark in fact it is kinda ambery in color. I then take a whiff and I still get chocolate only not as much as post steep. I let it cool and take a sip and I get nothing! I mostly just taste hot water and a hint of chocolate flavor. If this is the case I’ll be sticking with Teavana’s My Morning Mate but I won’t give up on it just yet I’ll try some different steep times and maybe more Mate and see what happens I’ll wait till then to rate it to give it a fair shot.

Update: Giving this tea a second time this time going for seven minutes at the suggestion of some of my fellow steeps and I still get a hint of cocoa flavor but honestly nothing about this tea is WOWing me. :( I like big bold flavors unless of course I am drinking a white or green tea but otherwise I like big bold flavors and this just doesn’t do it. My rating on this tea is not because it’s bad but because it lacks flavor.

This is the 1st mate I’ve had so I’m leary to mess w/ the steeping time too much. More leaf maybe? I agree w/ the “not so chocoaltey” though.

AmazonV

in the past i have to say for mate in general i steep like 7 minutes, and with heaping tsp’s not even (my morning mate teavana, ROT double chocolate mate etc)

SoccerMom

@cofftea I love mates but all the mates I have tried have been from Teavana (I liked them all) because they have alot of flavor and was disappointed because I expected 52’s to have just as much flavor but it’s just not there so far. I know people say that the flavors of 52teas are very light but I only want “light” if I am going for a green tea or a white not a MATE:)

@AmazonV I will try the 7 minute steep time tomorrow morning. I almost always use heaping teaspoons with mates too!

Cofftea

Some of them are light, some are IN YOUR FACE=D

AmazonV

I should update that in my profile, i like teas that are “in my face=D” i think that does describe my likes well….weak teas i have on occasion but i don’t really fall in love with them and want them around all the time

SoccerMom

AmazonV I am with you I like in your face teas too! I also like your profile “I love caffeine” I love caffeine too!

Lori

I definitely brew this one for 7-8 minutes to bring out the flavor. Although it is not necesarily chocolate-y, it does have a strong, bold flavor to me.

Although I haven’t tried Teavana’s My Morning Mate yet, both Teavana’s Matevana and 52teas Mate are comparable. Both are great in the morning as a substitute for coffee.

SoccerMom

Lori Thanks I will do 7-8 minutes in the morning. :)
