A long time traditional Southern U.S. favorite, but a stranger to the tea world, our sweet potato pie tea is bound to become a new star. A hint of toasted marshmallow makes this tea surprisingly decadent.

Thank you Darby for sending me this tea in a trade. I do not taste sweet potato pie because I am not finding the marshmallow sweetness. However, I DO Like this tea. I can taste the starchy sweet potato notes in the background. This tea does not come out and scream “flavored” rather the flavor notes are softer and more subtle.
I am inclined to refrain from giving this one a numerical rating, as it tastes like exactly what it promises to- sweet potato pie. I can really taste the sweet potatoes in it, and even the marshmallow. But it turns out this is too sweet for me (don’t laugh, it was a kind donation by silvermage). I don’t even put sugar or any sweetener in my tea, so there’s that to take into account- if you generally sweeten your black tea, you might be in for a treat here.
Actually, I have to say that this is one of the Adagio blends that best delivers on its description, of those I’ve tried. I’m going to keep at it and see if I can develop a taste for it, as I don’t have much tea with me here in Japanese-immersion-camp land.
I didn’t get the sweetness… maybe the starchy mouthfeel covered it.

Ha, Kristin, If I had any tea to spare here in J-camp land, it’d be yours in a heartbeat. As it is, it’s one of my last lifelines to tea ;) I’ve been drinking it like a fiend.

I’m pretty sure I steeped this tea for too long so when I try it again I’ll likely adjust my rating.
The smell of the dry leaves is slightly sweet in a starchy way and while I was brewing the tea the odor of sweet potato unfolded quite clearly and pleasently. The taste wasn’t so pleasent unfortunately, as it was quite bitter with a starchiness I didn’t really care for.
Seeing other peoples’ reviews of this tea I noticed that most of them used less time in their steeping so the next time I try this tea I’ll adjust accordingly and then I’ll see if that makes a difference.
I have some cleaning to do today around the house. And I’m trying to reach for a cup of tea rather than snacks in the afternoon. I don’t want to do a long, drawn-out tasting session; I just want to feel like I have had a little something nice during a full and busy day.
This was a free sample I got with my first Adagio order. I didn’t smell tea when I opened the package, but I did get sweet potato, and also something a little acidic. What that last part comes from, I have no idea. In the cup, with milk and sugar, it’s a simple dessert tea. Sweet potato, cinnamon and nutmeg, and a scent of crust that honestly fills the room on its own. Going from room to room while cleaning, every time I came back to where my cup was I could smell baked pie crust on entering the room.
This is not a tea to take seriously. It’s not meant to inspire or fortify you for pondering the meaning of life. It’s just ready to help you feel a little pleased while you get on with your day.
I love sweet potatoes! I know that I’ve had this tea in the past, but can’t really remember much about it. I can definitely taste the sweet potato, and there is also a really warm spiciness to this tea. The ginger is noticeable, and I wish it were a little less strong flavored, but it doesn’t ruin the tea. This is an ok tea, nothing in particular to point out that’s bad about it, but nothing jumps out and says “buy this tea”.
-Dry blend has medium black tea leaves with yellow petals and pieces of cinnamon bark.
-Dry leaves smell like earthy black tea with a hint of spice. Tea liquor aroma is of warm sweet potatoes and cinnamon.
-Tea liquor is a clear medium orange brown color.
-Malty sweet potato flavor with a spicy finish. Warm ginger aftertaste.
-Best with milk and sweetener.
-Fair tea. Light sweet potato flavor with a lot of spiciness.

I added some thick cream and a little sugar to sweeten it up, and the marshmallow came out. Delightful.
It’s quite brisk for a ceylon (?) – I probably shouldn’t have drank it this late at night. Eep. Oh well, only 2 more days of work left and then I’m FREEEEEeeeee

I was just coming on to report!! haha it was really nice actually! To be honest, it mostly just tasted like a really nice quality black tea with no bitterness, with a slight “starchy” aftertaste. But starchy in a nice way! haha so unique. It tasted a lot less like sweet potato fries, I think because I didn’t add any sweetener this time around.
But hey, not too shabby at all :D
2.25 grams of leaf steeped in 6 ounces purified boiling water for 5 min.
This is a hard tea for me to log because I typically do not prefer black teas unless there’s a flavor that I can’t find in a green, white, yellow, or oolong. So please take that into consideration when reading this although I will do my very best to be biased.
This tea (both raw leaves and steeped) definitely smells sweet, but the ceylon tea is also very present as it does not smell like a cream or even vanilla flavored tea. When I taste it, the 1st thing that hits my tongue is the ceylon. I hate when I drink a flavored tea and all I get is the flavor. Then the hint of sweetness. The potato doesn’t come thru in the flavor as much as it does the mouth feel and texture. It may seem weird that I say this because tea is a liquid, but this tea definitely has a dry, starchy texture and mouth feel. But then again wine, which is also a liquid, can be dry so I’ve decided tea can be as well. I’m going to resteep this, but I probably won’t get as many infusions I consider satisfactory as a person who really enjoys black teas as I find that for me they get watery tasting very quickly.
Conclusions: While I didn’t give this a very high score, I think a person who really enjoys black tea and/or dry wine would give this a very high score. I also think this is a great “safe” place to start if you want to get someone a savory or weird tea.
Oh heck why not, I think I may be tempted to add 2.25 grams of tea per potato (not per serving of water I use to boil them) next time I boil some for mashed potatoes (just for steeping purposes, I’ll remove the leaves after 5 min).
I know I gave the impression I didn’t rate it higher based on the fact that I don’t like non dessert/chai flavored blacks, but upon tasting Lupicia’s version I think my score states how accurate the flavor is. This tea is a good potatoe flavored tea while Lupicia’s more accurately captures the “sweet” and “pie” aspects.
I’m a sucker for different, unique teas. And sweet potato in tea is definitely different. Meghann picked me up a sample of this on her trip to the Adagio store (I’m 15 shades of jealous, let me tell you). Thanks again!
So, let’s speak briefly of the sweet potato pie. It should be ever-so-slightly starchy, have a creamy, mousse-like mouthfeel, and taste of brown sugar, cinnamon, and (of course) sweet potatoes. The crust should be buttery, flaky, and leave a distinct filmy-texture in your mouth after you’ve finished it.
I’m thinking Adagio and I have different recipes for sweet potato pie.
I’ve only steeped for 3 minutes, but the black tea base is strong, bordering on bitter. Normally I enjoy my teas at this stage, but with the combination of the sweet potatoes, it really doesn’t work. I’m getting a hint of sweet (marshmallow, maybe?), and definitely starch. I agree with Cofftea on this one, it’s definitely a “dry” tea; very astringent.
Okay, just added brown sugar and milk to the second cup. Astringency gone, “dry” feeling still there, bitterness gone. I’ll try a 2 minute steep next time around, but this is probably how I’ll be drinking this tea…much creamier/smoother/pie-er. Which bumps the rating down a bit for me.

Moment of truth, I don’t like sweet potato pie. It’s a texture issue. So I was excited to try this tea because I could enjoy the taste of sweet potato pie without having to eat it. That’s a win, win in my book.
The tea is nice. Rich and earthy with just a hint of sweetness. I thought at first that the sweetness was honey, but now I’m thinking caramel. I’m not getting anything that says pastry. Added a bit of sugar which heightened the sweet potato and caramel flavors. It’s nice, but I think the tea was just as nice without the added sweetness. If I were to have this again I’d drink it straight and just enjoy the deep mix of flavors.
