From Adagio Teas

Like wine and cheese, burgers and fries; chocolate and mint is a famous partnership in the world of food. We bring that popular flavor combination here, blended with green tea leaves to create a delicious, lip-smacking treat. Fresh and cool, with a smooth, sweet minty flavor and whisps of chocolate. Just like a stick of zesty peppermint bark chocolate. Bon appetit!

Blended With Green Tea, Cocoa Nibs, Natural Chocolate Mint Flavor & Peppermint Leaves

Chocolate and mint have been a flavor combination for nearly as long as Europeans have eaten chocolate. Originally added to reduce the bitterness of the cocoa bean, mint became ever more popular as chocolatiers made ever sweeter chocolates. The flavor is still popular today too, with Thin Mints making up to 25% of Girl Scout Cookie sales and mint chocolate chip regularly landing in the top ten for most popular US ice cream flavors. Other favorites include York Peppermint Patties (first made in 1940), Andes Candies (from 1950), and of course, our Cocomint Green.

I’m bumping up my rating for this one. Now that I have more control over my water temps (thank you variable temp kettle!) I find I like this a lot more. The first few times I tried this it was, off, somehow. Since I got my kettle it’s been a perfectly delightful brew every time. Very consistent lovely mint chocolate flavor. I will have to compare it with some of my other minty teas to see what kind of taste I prefer, and which ones stack up for re-ordering.

Cocomint Green used to be one of my favorite flavored green teas from Adagio, back when their teas came in the nice (free) canisters. The chocolatey, minty goodness had me from first sniff. But, like many love affairs, it came to a screeching halt.

A few years ago, a new batch prompted awful, fuzzy headaches immediately upon first sip; Cocomint and I had to part ways. After a long hiatus, I decided to give this tea another go, thinking that I was picking on the poor guy. Sadly, something in this tea just doesn’t like me anymore; it is the only tea that gives me any sort of reaction.

If you have ever had junior mints (candy) that is exactly the nose and taste of this tea. So if you enjoy junior mints you will probably like this tea.

Update: I am sending some of this out to Meghann and when I opened the little tin it smelled heavenly so I decided hey while I am packing this up for her I’ll go ahead and enjoy a cup myself. Anyway on to the tasting note I still get the mint but today I did not pick up on the coco part as much it’s is a very smooth mint flavor, soft and I want to say that the mint did not out do the green tea which it is blended with but unfortunately I don’t recall actually tasting the tea itself. I definently enjoy it but can’t wait to compare to some other mint green tea mixes to see where this one will fall.

This works better than it has any right to. I’m already a big fan of green tea with mint, and the use of mint flavoring instead of a mixture of mint leaves gives this a bright, clean mint flavor, grounded in the cocoa-y aftertaste.

This morning’s tea. I am just not a fan of the flavors. I don’t like the mint and it isn’t chocolaty enough for me to balance out the mint flavor. Tastes (to me) like a fake version of an Andes mint – but I don’t like Andes mints

Aug3zimm, if you don’t like ande’s mints, why did you try this?

Adagio Advent Calendar – Day 11

Advent tea & chocolate time! :D

So first, the tea. This is a chocolate mint green tea from Adagio. At first, I thought it was going to be coconut, and was very happy when it wasn’t. The dry leaf had a very powerful menthol aroma. The mint is quite sharp in flavor as well, reminding me of strong peppermint gum or the peppermint oil used for making candies. The chocolate is there as well, and honestly it’s not half bad for chocolate flavoring. Still tastes a bit waxy, but not over-the-top artificial. The base is fairly mild, though I do get some roasted seaweed notes and a touch of bitterness. I certainly wouldn’t order this tea, but it was fine. It reminds me slightly of Andes mints, which also have a strong mint flavor.

So I ended up having two advent chocolates today, the first being a DAVIDsTEA blueberry matcha-infused chocolate star. Honestly, these mostly just taste like white chocolate with very little matcha flavor. The blueberry was also quite light in this one. It was okay, but I don’t generally just eat white chocolate plain, so I certainly wouldn’t buy these.

The second is a La Maison du Chocolat mini Cavale Fruits bar. I don’t get the name, as this has no fruit and is in fact a dark chocolate base with bits of almond, hazelnut, and pistachio sprinkled all over the top. Yum, it’s really good! It’s nice to get a dark chocolate as a lot of them have been milk so far. The nuts are very roasted which adds an amazing depth of flavor. I definitely taste the almond and the pistachio, not sure about hazelnut specifically. But overall, very delicious, and it has a great texture too!

Holiday Tea-son! I drank several cups of this yesterday, but didn’t have a chance to review it since I was on the phone at the time. I finished off the sampler I snagged from Meowster’s cupboard destash, so thank you Meowster! Cocomint seems a rather holiday-season flavor combo, doesn’t it? Plus, I’m having a terrible migraine today from the snow front moving out last night (I knew the exact hour the barometric pressure changed… I should’ve been a meteorologist, seriously) but am having to buck it up and work all day today because all my coworkers are taking the week off. The mint at least calms the migraine-nausea.

This tea mainly has a minty aroma, though steeped up, I do get some sweeter chocolately notes coming through. The flavor is mostly a brisk, peppermint flavor, but there is a more subtle sweet cocoa note. The base feels pretty clean, but I don’t really taste any green tea notes against the flavor; there is a rather sharp peppermint flavor that does taste a little sweet and artificial compared to mint leaf, but I don’t mind it, and it isn’t causing me that metallic/coating reaction that I get from some of Adagio’s flavoring agents. Feeling a little sharp or possibly a little stronger than it needs to be is the most I can say for it. Mostly, it’s pretty nice, especially compared to a lot of Adagio flavored teas that have been outright misses for me.

Not my favorite chocolate-mint tea, but entirely servicable.

I too am often plagued by migraines, and recently they’ve been getting worse. I’ve even been considering getting a piercing to try to ward them off! Hope you’re okay.

Mastress Alita

I’ve had chronic migraine for nearly 20 years. It’s gotten worse over the years, but I get anywhere from 8-15 migraines a month (an average of 3 a week) so I’m quite used to it. I’ve tried just about everything over the years, Nattie (though I never did the daith piercings because the research showed that, at best, they only ever provided about 3 months top of relief in some people, which to me wasn’t worth a body alteration; even one I could remove, heh).

I’ve currently started the new anti-CGRP medications (I’m on Aimovig), which is the best preventative I’ve tried thus far. I’m not sure what their status is in other countries, I know in the US the main battle at the moment is getting insurance to approve them for most people (but our healthcare system is notoriously bad). It’s an auto-injector you use once a month, and the medication is a sort of anti-bodies that bind to certain receptors in the brain to try to prevent the onset of migraines, and cause migraines to be less severe and have a shorter duration.

I’m still having the migraine, but it certainly hasn’t gotten as severe as usual; the new Aimovig has really improved severity/duration for me when my triptan rescue drug fails. As far as prevention, I’d say I’m an “average” responder, getting a reduction of 2-4 migraines a month.

Nattie

Mine aren’t nearly as bad, I usually get 1 or 2 a month but lately it’s been 2-3 a week. One of the most recent ones was so bad I thought my head was splitting open or something more serious was wrong. I have never felt pain like it. I’ve never heard of Aimovig and don’t know if we have that or something similar over here, but I will ask my doctor. I might still get the daith since I like the look of it, so if it helps my migraines even for a little while I’ll see it as a plus lol.

Mastress Alita

I’m not sure if Ajovy and Emgality have made it to other countries yet (the other CGRP-inhibitors) but Aimovig appears to have been liscenced in the UK now: https://www.nationalmigrainecentre.org.uk/new-migraine-drug-aimovig-now-licensed-in-the-uk/

This is an excellent warm-weather tea! I love it in the summertime and with peanut butter and chocolate chip sandwiches (recipe below). The cool mint and tasty chocolate makes it a very enjoyable blend that I keep stocked!

Sandwich Recipe: Toast some potato bread, add creamy peanut butter to both slices, sprinkle some chocolate chips on one slice, then sandwich it together and toss it in the microwave for ten seconds per side. You’ll thank me!
