From Beautiful Taiwan Tea Company

What a smooth tea this is! This tea comes from a farm just above the pristine alpine lake called Sun Moon Lake. It’s hand processed by Mr. Lee and his wife, a wonderful and hospitable couple. They grow without chemicals the old fashioned way. Do you like black teas from India? This tea is similar but has no astringency. It’s a pure stock Assam Black Tea that has been growing in Taiwan since 1926 when the Japanese imperial machine started to foster a tea industry in Taiwan for world-wide export.

This, the fifth tea at Liquid Proust’s tasting event, was quite unexpected. It presented the maltery and mineral-sweet high notes of an assam, but the bitterness was absent, and the liquid was in fact a honey color. It was nice to enjoy the flavors of an assam less the “briskness”!

Tea #5, 2015 Asian Tea tasting event hosted by me:
This was the 2015 harvest that came with the rewards from Kickstarter and I must say that it was very tricky to identify or figure this tea out. I used water at 210f for 300 seconds and the liquid was lighter than a black tea should be. While I hate Assam tea, there is a clear Assam like taste that is present in this tea but it is much smoother and leaves behind that bitterness that the coffee drinkers can have because I don’t want it. Not something I would drink often but it is something to expand my tea drinking choice habits. Rather pleased that this wasn’t a dark, strong, bitter tasting tea even if I expected that.

Backlog:

A rich, delicious black tea with characteristics that remind me of an Oolong. It’s a very interesting and intriguing tea. Notes of fruit, flower, earth and molasses. This isn’t like the “Assam” that you might be used to (the Indian Assam) it’s much smoother and less astringent. It’s like the best characteristics from the robust, rich Assam tea together with the best characteristics of a Formosa Oolong.
