From Bitterleaf Teas

Made from mixed picking huang pian, with a few buds in there for good measure, this Jing Mai raw puer leans towards a more fruitier fragrance than our 2018 In Bloom. Similarly, it maintains a high fragrance and full taste in the mouth.

Huang pian simply refers to the older leaves on a tea tree that are either picked later in the season or removed from earlier pickings due to their less-than-desirable appearance. The leaves end up a yellow-green colour after roasting and don’t take to rolling the same as their younger counterparts, remaining flatter and stiffer.

Nonetheless, huang pian material still can make for a very flavourful tea, typically with a smoother, sweeter and easy to accept character at a fraction of the price.

This Jingmai Huangpian has become increasingly more syrupy and with age & the fragrant floral notes of violet and peony are matched with a sugarcane playfully fruity top note sweetness. This is close to the last of my sample, and it’s become increasingly hard to justify sessions of it when it’s only continued to get greater and greater. Surely I’m not alone in feeling like you ‘need’ the perfect moment to enjoy the last session or two of those special teas that you deeply regret not buying more of when you had the chance. Something about the timing of this session just felt right.
