From Butiki Teas

Pistachio Ice Cream has an Organic Mao Jian base with generous amounts of roasted pistachios and a dash of lotus stamens. The sweet roasted pistachio flavor is immediately noticed followed by prominent notes of heavy cream. Light notes of vanilla can also be distinguished. Add some sugar to turn this smooth full-bodied tea into a dessert treat that resembles pistachio ice cream.

Ingredients: Organic Green Tea, Pistachios (roasted, unsalted), Lotus Stamens, Natural Flavoring (vegan)

Recommended Brew Time: 2 minutes 30 seconds
Recommended Amount: 1 level teaspoon of tea for 8oz of water
Recommended Temperature: 180 F

I think this is going to become one of the favorite greens in my books. Such a delicate blend, very pleasant aroma. I usually love everything pistachio, but this combination is quite an unusual twist. I was expecting a sweet, nutty, honey taste, but in fact this tea is a delicate green with seaweed, grassy, nutty taste and lovely greenish color. I brewed it stronger then usually, but its thick, a tad murky and offers a nice mouth feel. The aroma brings the sweet creamy notes of ice cream and pistachio. Very nice combination, very pleasant experience. I enjoyed is with out sweetener.

Can I squeeze in one tasting note before I disappear for two weeks? Sure I can.

When I was a kid, pistachio was my favorite flavor of ice cream. This tea was definitely a return to those times, which was something I was counting on.

Brewed tea smells and tastes exactly how I remember pistachio ice cream to smell and taste. The base tea perfectly blends with the flavoring and even if something about this tea gets a tad too bitter, the bitterness can always be re-imagined as being a part of genuine nut flavor.

First sips, to be honest, did not impress me too much, in spite of being so nostalgic, but as I kept drinking I was more and more impressed with it. I will definitely consider getting some more of it in the future. This was a free sample that I got from Stacy (Thank you!) with my most recent order.

I got this tea as a sample and I was kind of disappointed. Maybe it was that touch of bitterness? Maybe a lower temp would solve that. If I see it in a TTB or something, I might grab another sample and give it another try.

Thank you so much MissB! This had been on my wishlist. I love this tea, creamy and nutty green. If I ever become a consistent green tea drinker I would get this again. Since I’ve heard you should drink green tea within 3 months plus my lack of patience on waiting for the water to cool, I don’t think green tea will ever be a staple for me. Maybe if I get a kettle that takes care of the temperature for me.

This one has also REALLY grown on me. I can’t get enough of the nuttiness combined with the green tea base. Soooooooooo ggoooooooddddddddd.

christeana1

How do you prepare this?

Virginia

1.5 tsp in 8 oz of 180 degree water, with a bit of rock sugar and milk :)

It’s really not the same without sugar or milk

christeana1

Thanks! I will have to try it with milk and sugar. The first time I made this it tasted soooo bland I figured I must be doing something wrong.

ohfancythat

It’s a delicately delicious tea!

christeana1

@what she said…how do you prepare?

ohfancythat

About the same, I follow Butiki’s directions and don’t add any milk or sugar!

I liked this tea a lot, but perhaps not quite as much as I built it up to be.

I tried it unsweetened at first, and it was decent, but I wasn’t really getting the pistachio like i’d hoped to. Then I added a little sweetness to it, and it was transformed. Not quite ice cream, but quite nice and creamy, and I finally could taste the pistachio.

I don’t know if I’d order this one, but I’m really glad that Stacy sent me a sample of it to try. I definitely wouldn’t turn it down if it were offered to me.

ETA – I’ve resteeped this and added just the barest touch of sweetener. I like it better that way, and the resteep is still nice.

Sipdown!

I have to admit that I played really fast and loose with the recommended steep parameters this time. Didn’t really pay much attention, in fact.

This tea smells so nice dry, but I have to admit that I’m not a fan of the base when it’s brewed up – the vegetal nature of the green base doesn’t really work for me, I’m afraid. I tried adding a splash of milk and a bit of sweetener to this to see if that would liven things up a bit – which is something I almost never do to green teas – but I still think that the charms of this tea are lost on me.

Many thanks to kaylee for the sample!

Oh my. :-/ I seem to have missed the mark with a lot of the teas I sent you. I’m sorry! Looks like we have really different tastes!

Christina / BooksandTea

Don’t worry! I’m still trying to figure out what I like, and at least I got to try some.

Kaylee

Maybe I should just send you some of the teas I really dislike :)

Sipping down samples all day and I all I wanted when I got home was this tea. I’m in serious trouble here… only 2 cups worth left. I WILL be restocking, but its just a matter of when…

On another note, I am dying to try DAVIDsTEA’s Pistachio Cream for comparison. I need to find someone who will swap or sell me some. It has officially become an obsession of mine to find some of that tea.

MissB

Pretty sure I have some here I can send you; if not, I live just a few blocks from a DT and will grab you a small package to compare.

lolainred

I would love that!

ohfancythat

I think it’s discontinued isn’t it?

lolainred

Yeah, whatshesaid, I think it might be seasonal from what I understand, though it might very well be discontinued for good. I know it’s not on their website anymore.

ohfancythat

I went looking because the idea of it intrigued me, hopefully it will be back in the fall or whenever!

This is a tea I could probably drink on a regular basis. I love the vegetal grassy notes alongside the pistachio flavors. Oh my goodness. So very yummy. Event without milk or sugar you can still detect a distinct creaminess. Adding both really kicks the decadence up a not. This a tea worth skipping dessert for!

I still have a few samples from Miss B’s mystery package I haven’t yet tried, this being one of them. I used 1 tsp for my tea and it seems a bit weak. I noticed others here have been putting a lot more in so I may try that next time. I am picking up the flavor but it doesn’t quite taste like pistachios to me. I’m getting the grassy flavor from the tea and the flavor over that that’s supposed to be pistachio…. I don’t know. It’s not a bad cup but I couldn’t really decide from this one cup if I like this tea or not so no rating.

Kitty tastings…..Mmmmm! Sorry, I’m in a weird little/kitty kind of mood right now, if that weirds you out you can stop reading and it won’t hurted my feefees! (Feelings.)

I ordered from Butiki last…Thursday/Friday I believe and got my package today, (Stacy said there was a delay with one of the teas, otherwise it would of been sent out earlier.) I chose this tea 1st because it smelled so sweet and nice and I adore pistachios! And I looooooooooooove! Pistachio Ice cream! (My favorite is by Ciao Bella, they also make a terrific Blood Orange Sorbet and the PassionFruit is equally good.) And have been known to eat a whole bag of pistachios in one afternoon, (even with having to shell them….I much prefer to get the shelled, although that makes it even easier to overeat. )

Anyways….I like reading reviews of a new tea when I’m drinking it, to see if I have the same/similar impressions. With this tea I am happy to say that with the 10-15 reviews I’ve read I agree with most of them:

Grassy (But in a good way this time!) Creamy (Not overly so. More like a hint.) Nutty. (Not sure if I would of figured Pistachios if this was a blind tasting.) Sweet. Doesn’t have an ice cream taste to me, though I’ve yet to have a tea where that is successfully translated and it might be something that is to complex of a taste for me. Shrugs That’s ok.
Going to try a resteeping, even though I want to try the others…giggles I am not much of a resteeper though I totally get the appeal.

At this time, I am not sure if I would get this again despite my liking it quite a bit. And I think I would say that even if I had a much better income, had an apartment/house of my own and a new car. (Stuff gotta save up for.)

Resteep: It’s an ok resteep, but like I’ve mentioned before I am probably not resteeping right. It’s still nutty and sweet but no cream. If I had half and half around the house I would pour just a tiny bit in, just to see how it rolls. Maybe I should buy some when I go shopping either tonight or tomorow. Heh.
