From Celestial Seasonings

Nothing promotes physical and mental well being like a good night’s sleep. So when you need something to help you unwind, enjoy a cup of Sleepytime Extra. This relaxing and delicious herbal tea starts with the time-honored blend of chamomile, spearmint and other soothing herbs found in our beloved Sleepytime® tea. We then add valerian, trusted as a sleep aid since the days of the Greeks and Romans because of its mild sedative properties. The result is a tea with the trusted calming effect and great taste of Sleepytime, plus just a little “extra” to gently lull you to sleep. †

This tea is delicious! I’ve just begun drinking it, so I’m not sure if the valerian is working yet, but I’m hoping that it will help me get a restful sleep. The flavour is delicious – delicate with a spicy undertone.

This box cracks me up – “plus just a little ‘extra’”

Anyway, this tea is quite delicious, and I do notice a prominent calming/mind-altering effect.

I am considering growing valerian (the “extra” ingredient). Apparently one can harvest the root and brew it. Has anybody tried this?

Found this sitting in the pantry unopened from when actual tea gave me horrible stomach pains and I was drinking just about any herbal I could get my hands on. Tastes like a gentle spearmint-chamomile blend. Color me surprised, I’m used to sleep aid teas being horribly medicinal and hard to finish. (Looking at you, 90% of bedtime teas with licorice components.) Not usually a big chamomile person, but it works here. Probably the lack of strongly flavored ingredients that allows it to shine through instead of present itself as a “yep that’s chamomile” note? And the valerian has me blissed out against a pillow with my eyes fluttering closed at 8:45. Gonna give into that urge to sleep and let this stuff do its magic.

Latergram from last night.
Standard CS Sleepytime minty-lemongrassy-chamomile with an extra, untastable kick of valerian root.

Feels like the directions called for a way longer steep time than their regular Sleepytime.

The valerian did give me unusually vivid and odd dreams, but nothing freaky and nightmarish like I got with melatonin.

I was somewhat groggy this morning, but I did manage to shut my brain off and get to sleep a lot faster. Placebo effect or valerian, who knows.
But for the same amount of tea and cost, why not add the extra help?

I’ve had trouble sleeping my entire life. According to my mother, as an infant I stayed awake all day, not falling asleep until around 10pm. Now as an adult I stay awake all day and without sleep aids fall asleep around 2-3 am.
This tea doesn’t work on it’s own, but still I drink either this or Yogi Bedtime every night, along with the rest of my very extensive pre-sleep ritual.
I probably wouldn’t this if it didn’t have sleep problems. To me it doesn’t have much taste. I drink it with milk and honey to give it some flavor.

Well this is a great sleepy time tea. Ingredients chamomile, valerian root and tilia estrella flower, it knocked me out every time. Plus flavor is not bad i doesn’t taste medical. This is different then their regular sleepy time i find that one has a more mint to it.

Very mild-tasting, gentle unassuming mint tea, is the general impression for this one. The taste of the chamomile is so subtly blended in, it’s more a whisper than an announcement.
I too am a member of the insomniac club, so welcome this as a nice go-to-bed cup. On the bland side, but one doesn’t want excitement before trying to sleep. I made a pot of it so that tonight’s will be at room temp, rather than hot. Nighty-night!

Ever since I heard that there is Valerian in this tea, that apparently makes you really tired, I wanted to try it. Because I’m all about relaxing teas right now. xD
So I tried it the other night, and of course, it didn’t make me any more tired than I already was. xD That was disappointing. I mean some people act like Valerian in teas really knocks you out. I was really hoping it would do that to me, but…things never really work for me that works for everyone else, so I shouldn’t be surprised.
Anyway, the taste isn’t too bad. Dry leaf smells strongly of spearmint.
The taste is almost the same as the smell, except it also tastes faintly of lemongrass. I read other tasting notes mentioning that. But it just was kinda a weird combo when I experienced it. xD Oh well.
I will have to try this again, maybe next time It will work better!

The Cookie Lady

I’ve found that when you really expect something to make you sleepy, you’ll never get sleepy because your mind is preoccupied by constant evaluation of whether or not you are in fact getting sleepier, meaning your mind doesn’t relax enough to become sleepy. At least, I feel like that’s how it works for me. When I don’t know something is supposed to make me sleepy or am distracted from constantly thinking about it, I’ll be that person who gets knocked out by it ;)

AllanK

Sometimes Valerian Root teas knock me out, sometimes they have no effect. I drank one last night after waking up in the middle of the night, it didn’t help me either.

AllanK

If the taste of the tea “isn’t too bad” there is probably not much Valerian Root in it, that stuff tastes terrible.

Terri HarpLady

When I want to use valerian as a sleep aid, I add a dropper full of valerian tincture to a cup of hot herbal tea, or sustain squirt it under my tongue. There’s never enough of the actual herb in a cup of tea to really do the job :)
Now THAT’S self-medicating!

OMGsrsly

AllanK, like aged cheese. Right? (There are less flattering descriptions of Valerian, but I’ll spare everyone!)

The tea bags smell like a freshly opened pack of spearmint gum. I absolutely love spearmint, so YUM!
To me, spearmint is also the main flavour that I detect (please note, I have yet to develop my “tea palette” , so I may add to this in the future)
This tea is very calming and comforting, like a warm, soft blanket. I really do look forward to drinking it before bed every night.
It leaves a pleasant and light aftertaste in the mouth.
Also delicious when cream is added to it!

I was hesitant to purchase this tea because of the warnings on the back of the box… “For adults only,” “Do not drink before operating machinery,” and so on. I was expecting a brew with an overpowering aroma and a bitter taste. Instead, what I got was something very tolerable, and pleasant. The color of the tea was a little darker than that of the regular Sleepytime tea; sort of a yellowish-amber color that deepens into a slight red. The aroma is indeed very fragrant – smelling strongly of mint and chamomile. It is the kind of fragrance that fills all of your senses with cooling and rejuvenation… very comforting and soothing. When you sip the tea you get a sort of tingle on your lips and in your mouth, probably from the spearmint or lemongrass. I find this to be very delightful. I have grown quite accustomed to the taste of this tea and I like it so much that it is now a significant part of every evening in my house. This is a very unique, lovely, tasty tea (even without honey or sugar!) that I will continue to purchase.
