So, to recap. I ordered 17 different Dammann Freres teas, and this is the last one. As of today I have tried them all. Some are absolutely delicious, others are just good. It seems to me that their teas that have several flavors are better than the ones that are just orange black, for example.

In the 10 days or so since I got the order I have picked this tea up and put it down maybe a dozen times. I just couldn’t bring myself to choose it over other things or get excited about it. Now I am wondering WHY?

This is. So. Good. I was brewing it on campus, and started to smell it and it was like a punch to the face. Yummy! Then I tasted it and I don’t know what I expected, maybe plain apple tea? But this tastes like a lightly spiced, buttery, caramel drizzled apple turnover straight out of the oven. So, so good. Definitely one of my favorites from the whole batch.

Sounds amazing!

Was given this as an afterthought in a café in Lyon, where I’d purchase a set meal (the only thing available on a Saturday or Sunday) that included an additional pot of tea. I think because they were busy and I was the “demanding Amercian”, I was given this. It’s been a few days now (feels like a lifetime ago! it’s been four days) so I tried it.

Uh….

Well, it’s nice. Nice for someone else. (All I got was a faint apple thang, maybe something like a Shirley Temple. Is there grenadine in here?)

Sundays in France can be interesting. When I spent over a month in Montpellier your choices were two Restaurants, McDonalda or the Kebab places everything else was closed. I loved the time I spent in Lyon. I hope you enjoyed/are enjoying it.

I was only there for the weekend, so it was tricky to really explore. I did however find the Gaul which used to house 10,000 people from around the world — more than 2000 years ago! Amazing.

Dammann Frères Advent Calendar 2022 – Day 22

So I remember being underwhelmed by this one in the past…

I think I like it a bit better than last time, but the base is still a bit too musty and earthy for me, and the flavorings are quite light. It has a nice, buttery caramel apple flavor to it that I would like a bit more of. I do get a hint of the maraschino cherry as well, not sure why it needs to be here but it’s fine. Maybe it gives the impression of a sort of apple upside down cake, with the cherries being included as they sometimes are in pineapple upside down cake? And of course that buttery brown sugar sauce is the caramel.

It’s enjoyable, but I feel like it would be so much better with either stronger flavoring or on a different base.

Day 20.

I am behind by one day. I didn’t have a chance to have this yesterday.

This is an apple tea. Nina’s Marie Antoinette is so good that I had high hopes for this one.

This year many of Dammann’s teas give me a black licorice taste and scent. I am pretty sure it is not me as I am not getting this with other teas. I don’t recall this last year.

This tea, to me has quite a scent of black licorice. It is supposed to contain black cherry so I wonder if that is what I am getting.

This tea has that black licorice/black cherry flavour. There is an artificial, but pleasant, sweet red apple flavour. It makes me think of candied apples. I think I am getting a bit of caramel. There is a very slight floral flavour. Initially the black tea base seems quite light but closer to midsip it becomes bold. There is a strange astringency in the aftersip. It is more a tingling sensation,

I wish this one was a bit more apple, but it wasn’t too bad.

hummm this is really strange Lala.I imagine you have this in a bag version due to the calendar.
Pomme d’amour normally has a strong taste of caramel apple and really nothing more. I wish you could taste this tea in the loose leaf version.

Lala

It is the sachet version from the Christmas advent calendar. I am thinking there may have been some contamination during shipping or something because a lot of the teas this year tasted like that to me. Even the ones I have had before with no problems.

This tea smells very sweet – hints of apple and cherry…? There is something in this that reminds my nose of a past memory and I can’t put my finger on it. Nevertheless, I’m excited to try this one since it’s such a unique blend.

Sipping… I taste the apple first followed by the smooth black tea. I taste something that reminds me of cinnamon in the background. It almost reminds me of an apple drink I’d have during the fall, but it’s not quite there. I’m not sure if I dislike apple teas or if the ones I’ve had haven’t been that great. Maybe apple is just a difficult flavor to work with in the tea world. The apple flavor is too fake for me, but I do appreciate how unique this blend is.

I wrote about this on the mail thread, but I will copy it here because it was really exciting! From a previous order from Dammann I knew that they usually threw in samples of wrapped sachets of their teas, so this time I went through their wrapped sachet offerings and in the order comments I requested a few of them that might be available. Well they did send me some wrapped sachets, but they also sent me two half-ounce packages of loose tea of two of the samples I had requested (Vanille and Pomme d’Amour). Awesome! Now I know that I can request loose samples from them in the future!

When I requested a sample of this tea, I didn’t realize it was CANDY apple, or else I forgot in the intervening time since I ordered. Then I was looking at the label and seeing that one of the “arômes” contained the word “caramel”, and I got really excited. And I read Ysaurella’s note and got more excited. SO glad I requested a sample of this one!

It smells sooo appley and also has a definite sweet buttery toffee-ish type smell. I really wanted to drink this before it got cool enough. Finally! This is quite delicious. INTENSELY appley. I agree that it comes across as almost a baked apple, where the apple flavor is really intensified. Definitely caramelized sugar and a bit of buttery goodness as well. If I had to pick out one thing I could do without on this tea it’s the maraschino cherry. It is a light note and meshes well enough with the apple that I don’t mind, but I can still get hints of it. Still, this is super tasty and I’m very happy to have a sample!

Sounds fantastic! :D

Lariel of Lórien

That sounds good. And is it ‘love apple’ or ‘apple of love’?

Ysaurella

this is a really good tea for sure. In the past it had another name “thé des vieux garçons” but Dammann changed it years ago now. Still good whatever his name is !
