From DAVIDsTEA

Precious jade

For the true connoisseur. Unlike regular green tea, Gyokuro Yamashiro (literally “Jade Dew”) is shaded for 6-7 weeks prior to plucking, so it’s dark, extra-energizing and extremely rare outside of Japan. Experts rhapsodize over its extraordinary tea oil and chlorophyll notes. And its lengthy time out of the sun gives it an intensely rich flavour – think dark, leafy greens mingled with buttery sweetness. Truly exquisite. (MK Kosher)

Ingredients: Steamed green tea from Japan.

Meh. For the price, I was expecting to be absolutely blown away. While it’s true that the tea has a wonderful, buttery mouthfeel, I was not impressed by the taste, which I found to be a bit flat. Perhaps I’m brewing it wrong?

Very vegetal, full brothy-like taste. Flavour is highly reminiscent of seaweed. Prevalent buttery notes and roasted tones.

Refined, adult, and delicate. A short steep time, because it oversteeps easily. But it still tastes so… refined. I feel more adult just drinking this.

There’s a bit of a metalic aftertaste, which I associate with green tea in general (though nowhere near as strong as when I oversteep…), but it is wonderfully subtle here. Definitely the best green tea I’ve had to date.

This is my first sip of a gyokuro. As someone who leans toward straight green teas, I really like it. This steeps to a beautiful bright yellow-green color. It tastes fresh and vegetally-green and can be enjoyed without any sweetener (I added just a few drops of pure lemon juice, as I customarily do). I will enjoy this a few times a week and will definitely use my frequent steeper points toward this more pricey (but worth it) tea in the future.

The first green tea that I enjoyed came from Tim horton’s; the lemongrass and lemon balm nearly completely took the bitterness away. Gyokuro Yamashiro has a nice flavour profile, but it too will be bitter if you like strong tea as I. However, you can add spices such as MDH fenugreek leaves 1/16 tsp (adds further complexity/earthyness), 1/24 tsp turmeric (like ginger, but healthier and not as pungent), 1/32 tsp of basil leaves (what a difference), lime/lemon zest 1/8 teaspoon.

This tea is expensive. $22.00 / 50 g. This places it squarely in the premium / super premium market.

The tea itself is dark green. The colour of the dried leaf / brewed leaf are both very good. I agree that the flavour is buttery. I think, though, that is because of a general overall lack of taste. The colour of the brew itself is yellow. Considering that this is a gyokuro, that might be disappointing.

Really good gyokuro is amazing. This tea is average. I used $4.50 cents worth of this tea. And the result was a tea that was just average. I would guess that this is machine trimmed tea.

I’ve tried this tea several other times as well, and not been impressed with it.

It’s better to order your Gyokuro from Japan and avoid paying too much for average quality tea.

Tastes fresh but as a whole it’s not a tea that I can get excited about. Much too fancy for casual drinking and not that enjoyable

So I basically waited and waited until I had enough points on my redemption card to get 50 grams of this tea and boy am I ever glad that I did, this has to be my favorite green tea! Wait, wait just a sec let me have another sip…MMmm warm buttery spinach so soft and delicate. This tea literally melts the stress away and I can drink it knowing that I haven’t broken the bank account by buying it.

I don’t understand this tea. I have drank it, Western Style, with Sushi. However everytime I try to drink it Japanese style, I get a bitter mess.

MrQuackers

PS, I recommend you try Long Jing, a Chinese Tea from DT.

Cindy

Really? I have absolutely no bitterness what’s so ever, just buttery notes with a hint of spinach. I am sorry to hear as I am on my second cup now this is quite beautiful.

Cindy

I will thank you for the tip.

Crowkettle

I enjoy this one too, although I generally only have it as a cup to go on special occasions :)
