From DAVIDsTEA

Yo ho ho-conut

Hot buttered rum is so delicious we want it all day long. Unfortunately, most employers frown on workplace drunkenness, so we came up with this rich and creamy alternative. Toasted coconut and vanilla beans mingle with black tea in a caramelized caress of flavours. Decadent hot or iced, it also blends perfectly with dark rum, brown sugar and a dash of milk – so go ahead and indulge your inner pirate, off the clock. (MK Kosher)

Ingredients: Organic: Fair Trade Certified Black tea, coconut flakes, vanilla beans, cornflower petals. With organic and natural flavouring*.

OMG this is soo good! Imagine buttery, creamy rum with a touch of coconut… but ok to drink and (drink alot) while working. This stuff is amazing! Can’t wait until I can add a touch of the Captain to this tea.

Jaime

Mmm…Captain…

Must not go to Liquor Barn on way home. Must not go to Liquor Barn on way home.

Kristen

LOL! Did you stop? I am thinking after the kids are in bed I am going to “spice” it up a bit!

Jaime

I’m not off work yet, sadly. And I don’t normally do caffeine in the evenings (I like sleep), so I don’t think I’ll be trying it that way tonight. Maybe this weekend, when I don’t have to worry about how late I stay up!

SimplyJenW

MMMM! Captain! ….Need! ’nuf said…… ;)

Dinners on and I thought a quick cup of tea would keep me going in the mean time. There were quite a few coconut curls in my sample which is something I haven’t craved for a while. Whenever my husband gets ill I make him banana custard with coconut sprinkles, it’s all he would/could eat during his chemotherapy.

As soon as I poured the tea I could smell buttery and creamy coconut. Yummy! Upon closer sniff-spection I can also smell it’s thick sweetness and vanilla like.

Flavour is sweet, very buttery, a little sour, coconut-y and rich. It does taste quite strongly black tea based but the coconut keeps it light and sweet. My husband said it tastes like a buttery biscuit base, like that of a cheesecake.

It’s an interesting tea that would try iced next time or perhaps with some sugar to see if it brings out more coconut.

Sniff-spection might be the best new word in a long time.

Sip down!

Sad – had an interesting tea tale with this one. I disliked it the first time I tried it, but was told to make it as a latte, now we are talking! Steepster is awesome!

Anyways, my last latte. I’ve been saving this cup, but I really need the tin room right now. Sadly, as much as this is tasty buttery, rummy, coconutty latte tastyness, I don’t think I’d get more of this tea for awhile as it’s only good as a latte.

Anyways, off to work on some artwork – it’s my wedding anniversary soon

Ms Bonnie sent me some of this months ago. I drank it on International Talk Like a Pirate Day. The remainder is in a special treasure chest, with other teas that I have deemed worthy of that special swashbuckling day!!

Last time I had this, the leaf had gone rancid so that kinda left me with a distaste for this tea, still, I thought it would go well with eggnog and I was right. The coconut was creamy but not lotiony and oh-so-sweet. And the vanilla was refreshing and delightful. Very, very good.

Roswell Strange

This is good with Butterscotch Scnhapps, or infused with Hot Chocolate :)

VariaTEA

I can see that.

I got my best friend into loose leaf tea last week, and she just went to DavidsTea over the weekend and picked up a bunch of stuff. Today, she sent me home with little samples of a few different varieties. This is the first one I made for myself, and WOW. I wasn’t really sure what to think from the smell, it had an overwhelming alcohol smell and I was quite impressed… but not sure it would be for me. But the taste is so buttery and sweet and delicious, I am blown away. Delicious tea, as everyone before me has said. I think we are getting a tin of this in our next order.

Can’t remember if I have reviewed this yet… oh well, I will now!

I bought 50g of this via the website in an order earlier this fall, then proceeded to forget about it in my excitement to try the fall collection. It waited, patiently, for me to give it my attention… and today I finally brewed up a cup and focused on the flavour. But I gotta say, I was disappointed! With all the hype this tea gets, I thought I would have fallen in love immediately.

Not to be swayed I brewed this again, but this time I made it following last years December DAVIDsTEA newsletter recipe for spiced butter—cream together 1/2 cup butter, 2 cups brown sugar, 1 tsp cinnamon, 1/2 tsp grated nutmeg, and a pinch each of ground cloves and salt, then store in the fridge to use ANYTIME—and made it like a latte.

Now. There. Is. No. Turning. back. I’m addicted. I can’t stand this tea straight-up, but with the addition of milk & spiced butter it’s a whole other tea…

Kay Kanada

Oh man, it’s a love-hate relationship when your nice healthy tea becomes just as decadent as any dessert! That sounds amazing!

Faith

Totally! I mean, how healthy IS that butter—not at all—but it tastes so epically good! Plus, moderation is key… right? Right?

Kay Kanada

Moderation and tea simply do not go together!!

ScottTeaMan

Butter and tea? Really? Can you taste the tea at all?

Faith

You definitely can, I think it just brings out more of the “butteriness” in the tea… or it does for me, anyways.

ScottTeaMan

I just never heard of putting butter in tea before….it’s all good :))

Nov 2012
GOOD MORNING last cup of buttered rum.
i overslept a bit. i need to go pick up my rental car and head north to my last marathon of 2012.
it will be my third marathon in 3 weekends.

Buttered Rum has become “the tea i’m always in the mood for”. i’m afraid i will miss it too much and have to buy some more immediately. but i really should branch out shouldn’t i? :)

one last brew before an evening with friends.

Dec 2012
i went to see Concrete Blonde last night
i brewed this in my timolino to drink on the drive there.
the first song they played was a Midnight Oil cover song. that was pretty amazing since it was the song my boyfriend sang at a karaoke party just 2 days earlier.
they also sang Take Me Home which is probably the one song that will sometimes always make me cry a little. in a good way.
life is beautiful and terrible and strange.

oh, and we had ethiopian food before the rock show. i ordered spiced tea. it was a bright orange chai served in a clear glass mug, and tasted lovely, but i should have probably added a little sugar to make it really dance.

canadianadia

Wow! kudos on completing so many marathons – what a great accomplishment

Shmiracles

thank you canadianadia! my 3rd one went really well. and today i’m not even that sore. it must be the TEA! :)

First off, I had really been wanting to try this one, Jenn! Thanks so much, really enjoying the samples!!
Dry leaves smell like buttered popcorn and butterscotch. Pretty blend, I love the color of cornflowers. Steeped 1 1/2 tsp per 8 ounces at 205 degrees for the recommended max of 6 minutes.
Steeps to a golden brown liquor reminiscent of rum. The buttered popcorn scent seems to have mellowed out and the butterscotch has taken the forefront. First thing I notice is the good base tea used, especially for a flavored tea. It’s crisp and astringent yet smooth and not bitter. I expected a darker, maltier black tea but this was a good choice.
I’m not tasting a lot of rum. What I am tasting is butterscotch, for sure. Especially as it cools, and especially after I added brown sugar and a splash of coconut milk. That really kicks it up several notches. Lots of buttery butterscotch. But it’s a touch darker than butterscotch, if that makes sense. It has more depth and isn’t as cloyingly sweet. That’s what had always turned me off to butterscotch flavor in the past – it’s intense richness and sweetness. It still tastes like tea. A very well balanced tea.
I’m going to take off a few points because I can’t really taste rum, and I like rum. I’ll have to order some of this and try it with a shot.
All in all a very enjoyable, bright, smooth, balanced butterscotch tea that keeps me wanting more.

You know, I didn’t get ANY rum flvaour until my 3rd cup! I know you just have a sample, but it’s strange, it just kind of stuck up on me when I wasn’t expecting it. You might find that happening too, next time you give it a try ^^
For me it happened in the aftertaste, at the top of the mouth, this woosh of rum that I had never tasted before. Crazy!

Ashley Bain

that is really interesting! well rum or not it’s still great!

Erin Hurley

I want it. Pretty much a lot.

Ashley Bain

David’s teas are REALLY impressing me, I have to say. I need to place an order soon with them, and The NecessiTeas.. because I’m craving their vanilla cola iced like no other.

Erin Hurley

I’ve never had tea from either company… maybe I need to set up a trade with miss Jenn :)

Cash & Chris

Definitely try it with a shot; I LOVE that cocktail. Gonna send you lots of davidsteas in this package, they’re my favorite brand by far..

Maxime-Daniel Friðrikson

A great mixture for winter is… Try this tea with a little “Dulce de leche” Haagen Dazs ice cream, a little 100% pure maple syrup with rum. A delightful experience. :)

Ashley Bain

YUM! Winter? Heck. It’s summer and I’m trying that as soon as my shipment arrives.

Ashley Bain

oh and pure maple syrup is all I use, grade B! – obsessed with that stuff!

I’m trying to keep from snacking so I figured I should have some sweeter teas to curb my cravings. I remember liking this one back in my “I only love flavored teas” phase. Unfortunately, many teas have fallen victim to my tastes changing and this one is most definitely one of them. The first few sips were super tasty. Just like those little buttered rum candies. But after about 3 or 4 sips it started just tasting syrupy. I ended up dumping it. Bummer, I still have a about 40g of this.

tea-sipper

I figured you fell out of love with flavored teas with that package you sent me. But I LURRVVE all of them. thanks again! :D

TastyBrew

Awesome! I’m so glad you like them!

Dan

Always up for a Buttered Rum swap :)

I used 1 tablespoon of dry leaf for 375 ml of water.

Creamy flavour I can detect the coconut and vanilla. There is something that reminds of hard liquor smell and what I imagine it would taste like (but milder and much more manageable). There is a definite corn flavour. This tea could probably use 0.25 tablespoons more leaf.

Advent calendar?

Kittenna

Hahaha, I thought the exact same thing, Kiaharii!

Raritea

Sadly, I don’t have the David’s Tea Advent Calendar. I was inspired by others who did and wanted to feel like I was participating by having the December 1st tea :) I can’t wait to see what people are opening today!!

Kiaharii

Aw, I do have buttered rum but I’m not a huge fan. I decided to pass on the Advent Calendar, I have enough teas I should just make my own!
