From DAVIDsTEA

It’s a slice

There’s not much you can count on in this topsy-turvy world, but one thing we’re sure of is chocolate cake. No matter who you are, a big slice of cake is pretty much guaranteed to make you happy. We call it the Sweet Life Theory: life just isn’t as sweet without chocolate. And this cocoa and cake-scented tea is just as rich and chocolaty as the real thing. With this in your cupboard, a smile is always within arm’s reach. No baking or shopping required.

Started having a typical morning – I got up, let out the rabbit, Benson, then attempted to leave the area to make tea. Benson was not having a typical morning of running around and he trapped me in the room by jumping on my feet and nosing me. So I sat with him, petting and feeding him snacks for awhile. I’m dying for my morning cup of tea and noticed his fur has been changing colour again. When he was a baby it was black and grey. He then got more and more black. Now he’s shedding and he’s looking kinda chocolately brown black. Mmmm.. chocolate tea? I finally was able to leave once he started playing in the cardboard boxes on the other side of the room.

Chocolate Cake Teaaaa! (from Kittena)

DRY: forgot, lol! Dying for tea!

STEEPED: Dark brown tea that is slight cloudy. Chocolate liquor smell. Quite a lot of debris on the bottom of the cup.

TASTE: Slightly creamy, chocolately and pretty sweet. I found the black tea a little weak, but that could of been me skimping out on the dry leaves or needed a long steep.
I didn’t realized this tea would be so sweet, but I saved a half a cup sweetened with rock sugar. With that, it’s really sweet and still creamy chocolately.

OBSERVATION: this tea left a weird residue in my steeper that I had to scrub out with soapy water. Globby white blobs, I’m guessing from the sprinkles.

COMMENTS: Not bad, I’d love to try this one again. Would love to just go heavy on leaves and have a chocolate overload.

Excuse me, need to feed the bunny some bok choi.

2 year old leftovers.

And….Blergggggh. A cup of tea scum and weird stevia taste.

I mean there was some chocolate in there somewhere, but I’m over it.
I hate that weird sweetener taste and the oil slick on the top of my cup.

Lowered my rating from 68.

Swap pile.

I’ve actually been hoarding this one since I bought it, I was so disappointed when DT discontinued it and kept the gross old rooibos Birthday Cake blend. However, clearly my tastes have changed! It’s not worth hoarding now! I guess that’s why you should drink teas when you love them….lesson learned

Courtney

I am really enjoying all your notes since regaining your love of tea.

ohfancythat

It’s like I became a different person after I had the baby

(……hah. I meant tea-wise :))

Courtney

Haha I got it. Yeah it’s neat to see the abrupt change that I went through seemingly more slowly.

ohfancythat

I guess when you go from 6 cups a day to abruptly stopping drinking tea for a year and then start up again all sorts of crazy things can happen!

It’s also because I was hoarding things and not drinking them…perhaps had I tried this last year, the reaction would have been the same.

I guess that’s one of the side effects of broadening your tea horizons!

Courtney

Woot! Broadening tea horizons for the win.

ohfancythat

Except the $$$$ part :)

Because dang it, broadening your tea horizons is addictive!!

Courtney

True story.

TeaLady441

Yeah, I’m with Courtney – it’s interesting seeing your reaction to teas from before, although it’s disappointing that you’re stuck with terribel teas. :| (Or terrible to you. I’m not trying to dump on them. :P)

I guess it’s a good way to clean house!

As far as smells go, this tea is a winner. The dry tea smells so rich and chocolaty; it’s perfect. This tea has everything from cocoa to roasted carob to white chocolate. And of course, what would a cake tea be without sprinkles? There are loads of white candy sprinkles!

I’ve noticed that this tea has an oily residue on the surface. If you let it cool down for too long, the residue becomes even more prominent. Regardless, the tea smells great. Smelling the steeped tea honestly has me convinced that I’m about to indulge in a delicious hot chocolate. This would be great in the winter!

Maybe it’s because I was hoping for a hot chocolate taste, or maybe because I love rich chocolates, but this tea is a little weak for my liking. The smell has you expecting an explosion of chocolate, but I’m tasting more of a watered-down chocolate. That aside, it definitely does remind me of chocolate cake batter. But unfortunately, this tea is more woody and bitter than the other two cake teas.

The tea is plenty creamy without milk, but I’ll add some just to see what happens… And what a great decision that was! The milk makes the tea creamier, brings out some of the chocolate and in my opinion, makes it taste more like the hot chocolate I was hoping for.

So although this tea has a rich smell that promises a deep, chocolate taste, it ends up tasting a bit watered-down. Milk improves the situation a bit, but I still think this is my least favourite of the three cake teas from David’s Tea.

I’m conflicted. This one smells a lot sweeter than it is, almost like those instant hot chocolate packets you can buy at the grocery store. Maybe even hot chocolate from Tim Horton’s. The first time I steeped it I kept it at around 4 minutes and got the “chocolate water” so I upped the steep time to just over 5 minutes and the results were dramatically better. This is quite nice with a splash of dairy-free milk especially, and I’m really looking forward to trying it in an iced latte. I enjoyed this tea very much.

Looking forward to trying this one!

femocakes

I’m still not sure whether I’m going to stock up on this one as I prefer the ice cream cake tea, but it’s actually quite good once you figure out how long to steep it for, and I can’t seem to drink this one without milk anymore after trying it.

This was my favourite chocolate tea…untill the Cocoa Canelle came out this week that is!

Rich chocolatey tea, fantastic on its own or with milk. I’ve even made milkshakes with it! Sweet enough on its own, with all the chocolatey goodness in it. Smells like brownie batter when I sniff the tin, but smells like fresh cake when I smell the brewed liquid. I keep a container of mini chocolate chips on hand to add to my second brew to kick up the chocolate flavour once most of the chocolate has already been used the first time (the leaves themselves are good for 3-4 steeps I’ve found).

Try making it extra hot/strong and adding a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a dollop of whipped cream!

This tea is FANTASTIC. It smells like baking to me. When it’s steeped it does this wierd cloudy thing and it leaves alot of junk at the bottom of your cup from all of the chocolate, but it tastes like chocolate cake batter. I drink a gross amount of this tea, it’s by far my favorite this week.

Sipping on a big pot of this while marathoning 30 Rock (my girlfriend’s sister insisted that I’d love it and she’s right).

This is one of the first teas I bought from DAVIDsTEA a little over two years ago when I first got into looseleaf teas. It’s weird because I really like the chocolate flavour in this but I can’t say the same for other chocolate teas from DAVIDsTEA (like Stormy Night and Dr Chocolate). The chocolate in the other teas seems kind of fake? I get kind of get it with this tea but there’s the white chocolate pieces and stevia to change the taste.

Wow! Yummo! I don’t actually have any of this myself, a friend got some in my last order so I naturally demanded a cup. It tastes just like the basic, old school chocolate cakes my mum used to make when I was little. Very yummy, was great just with a dash of milk.

Bought some of this because I needed some more black teas to wake me up my early morning exams. I bought it because I love DAVIDs Chocolate teas on a whole (especially chocolate rocket and love tea #7) so thought why not?
In terms of black tea, I didn’t really taste the black tea (which I prefer). The chocolate flavour was good, tasted like cake actually does! It didn’t really have the richness I was hoping for though, and that made the flavour overall lacking for me.
Still yummy, no magic though!

Sometimes, I am just too curious for my own good. Hello another great tea that I am just going to have to appreciate being able to try! This one was also sweet (though I did toss in a bit of sugar) and super chocolaty. I got a strong baking note from it and it was very reminiscent of cake. Like the Ice Cream Cake, the black tea base was really nice and light, the main part of the flavour profile was the sweet chocolate. I actually like both this and Ice Cream Cake even more than the Red Velvet Cake that is available… Typical! But they are all really great teas in their own ways!
