From DAVIDsTEA

Just about every grandma has a secret recipe for special occasions. For David’s Bubbie, it’s baklava – studded with walnuts, almonds and pistachios and scented with honey and rose. And no family get-together is complete without it. This honey-scented oolong is an homage to that deliciously nutty treat. With candied fruit, nuts and spices, it’s rich enough to make any occasion feel special.

Price per 50g: $9.50

Dilute-tasting. The fullness of the flavour really comes out at the end of the sip, especially as the brew cools. The walnut is a very nice complement to the oolong and pairs nicely with the cinnamon. I detect a hint of sticky sweetness. Note of apple. Roasted note from the chicory root. This tea may benefit from a stronger concentration of dry leaf.

This one smelled so good…just like some kind of delicious pastry! Unfortunately, the cinnamon is really overwhelming the other flavors for me. I get a little bit of nuttiness and maybe a hint of honey, but mostly just cinnamon. I will try a shorter steep time with the rest of my sample and see if that mutes the cinnamon enough to let some of the other flavors shine through. Thanks for the sample, VariaTEA!

I tried this tea last night and actually let it simmer in a pot on the stove. By doing this, the flavor was much stronger than the sample I had at Davids a few weeks ago (which I would describe as very mild, and bland). I used 2 tablespoons of loose tea per cup of water. After I drank my first cup, I added more water and let it simmer again (the second cup was pretty good, a little weaker).

The tea was actually flavorful when I made it by simmering. However, as I drank the tea, I kept asking myself ‘what is so special about this tea’?

This is the first time I’ve had oolong tea, and I liked it alot. The oolong didn’t wipe out the flavors of the “baklava”.

Overall, nice tea. I’d recommend steeping it strong so more of the taste is present. I will recommend this tea, but just a fair warning, you probably won’t have your socks knocked off!

This was the tea of the day down at David’s. I tasted the sample and said, “meh,” but it was promising enough to ask for a cup sweetened with a little honey. The honey seemed to add to the complexity, and it was quite nice for dessert.

Time to start drinking all of my samples again! This was one of the David’s winter blends that I still haven’t tried. I do enjoy roasted oolongs, which is what the base of this looks like. There are a lot of chunks of fruit and stuff. Dry scent is heavy on the cinnamon with a strong nutty presence.

Hm, this is just okay for me. The strongest flavor is the cinnamon, but even it is kind of muted. There are some fruity and nutty notes, but mostly this is a cinnamon tea (sort of like Snickerdoodle was). Thanks to Roswell Strange for the sample. :)

My husband drove the 3 or so hours each way (!) to the newest Davidstea near us this past Saturday (my birthday) so I could redeem my 4 (gulp) 2oz bags and get my free brewed tea for my birthday. I wound up picking this one out because it tasted so good at the front of the store and didn’t require any additives. I thoroughly enjoyed it on the long journey home and picked up 3 of the 3 for $15 tins so I’d have some at home (this, eggnog and apple custard – as a side note, both this and the eggnog are cheaper per gram or ounce if you buy the mini stackable tins for the $5 in store price and you get a cute tin!).

This is a nice slightly creamy cinnamon tea. I love that it’s an oolong and not a black tea. I can see myself sipping this all winter long. It shouldn’t be a surprise when i say I enjoyed my free cup to go!

I also “bought” Gold Rush, Mulberry Magic, Vanilla Orchid and Butterfly Jasmine.

This one sounds so good!

I think this is on par with Sugar Plum Forest as my favourite tea out of the Winter Collection. I do love a good, nutty tea! I was very sad when my cup of this was over, and I think I’m going to have to order some more of it before it goes away. Very nice with a splash of milk.

this has become my go to dessert tea especially due to the low caffeine. It’s got that classic oolong smoothness (thought not strongly “tea” flavored) with the addition of sweet papaya and smooth pistachios. I think I want to try infusing this into some of my baking experiments. The best part is that the lingering taste very reminiscent of actual baklava. The first steep is best on this one as the fruit loose a bit of their body the second and third time around, but as the base of this is an oolong I encourage multiple steeps. (I’ve gotten 5 good ones).

Sipdown (106)!

Made in my timolino, the flavour profile was almost identical to the mug worth I had a few days ago, but this one was just slightly stronger on the fruit notes and had a very slight, floral rose note to it as well.

I still think this is the most enjoyable and justifiable of the Winter teas to repurchase, but even still I’m not impressed enough with it to do that. I’m getting too picky guys; but then again that’s probably a good thing. And I still have lots of last year’s teas I stocked up on (Gingerbread and Choconut Oolong) anyway…

Cameron B.

It’s not just you, dear. Their fall teas did not impress me, and I’m basically only trying the winter/holiday ones for the novelty of it, and not expecting much.

donkeyteaarrrraugh

are there any david’s teas that are really malty or baked bread? I just read your profile and it seems like we like the same black teas…. the only flavored tea I’ve ever found that I like is Lupicia’s Carol…. Perhaps they don’t use fabulous black tea for bases for flavored because they are too quality to justify the cost…..

Roswell Strange

I can’t really think of any :/ Unfortunately, I’m not super familiar with DT’s straight blends – the ones I have had were definitely not really high quality, so I tend to focus on their flavoured ones…
