From DAVIDsTEA

Just about every grandma has a secret recipe for special occasions. For David’s Bubbie, it’s baklava – studded with walnuts, almonds and pistachios and scented with honey and rose. And no family get-together is complete without it. This honey-scented oolong is an homage to that deliciously nutty treat. With candied fruit, nuts and spices, it’s rich enough to make any occasion feel special.

Price per 50g: $9.50

I’ve been trying to get this flavor for a while, but my local Davids Tea has been selling out a lot lately, whew! Today I got a hot cup brewed for me by the Davids Tea baristas. I’m glad I got to try this tea, but I am not exactly sure what the fuss is about. It is light, nutty, sweet, with comforting cinnamon. But for all its ingredients (chicory, pineapple, rose blossom, and more) it seems pretty simple to me. Perhaps the blend feels one note because it wasn’t brewed long enough, so perhaps its worth me over steeping it next time. There is the usual cinnamon and cardamom to make it feel seasonal, but I can’t taste any rich chicory, any rose, or much of the unusual roasted nuts. I would be hard pressed to distinguish this from a lot of the other nut-based teas on Davids Tea like Toasted Walnut. It’s nice, and a lot of people seem to be utterly in love with it, but I think it could be better.

I bought 25g of this based on the smell. I figured it couldn’t hurt to have another herbal, but when I got home I saw that it was oolong. Not that I mind.

I have never had baklava so I’m not sure what this is meant to taste like. I was hoping for more rose and honey notes to spring out, but to me, it honestly tastes a lot like sleigh ride, or a way less delicious version of forever nuts.

It’s just like a cinnamon spicy fruity nut tea that I’ve had before in some other incarnation.

Nothing bad, but I wouldn’t buy more :)

I wish they would have done some kind of gingerbread cookie tea instead!

Hmm, overpowering cinnamon. It’s sad that I can’t really taste most of the other notes in here. Maybe a slight nuttiness. Funny because I happened to purchase baklava the other day, so having the two side-by-side really highlights the flaws in this tea. Totally not even close to the flakey, honey-sweet dessert.

This tea has a nice, light, pleasant enough, nutty flavour but that’s all I really get from it. Not anything really special in my opinion. Even with a hit of agave nectar it still could have standed to be a little sweeter. This is a “middle-of-the-road” tea for me. There are ones I dislike more than this one and ones I like more. It goes down easy enough so I won’t have any trouble finishing what I’ve got but I don’t feel the need to keep it stocked up. It’s not bad if light and nutty is your thing but nothing to write home about.

I LOVE winter and am always so excited to see what the winter collection has to offer. Nothing is more enjoyable than being snowed-in and sitting in front of the TV watching Christmas movies with a blanket, a cup of tea, a fire and a pet or two. I picked up a few grams of this yesterday and brought it home to try. I’ve never had baklava so I can’t really comment on whether or not this tea tastes like it but I can say that overall, it was quite a pleasant cup of tea. I’m not usually a fan of the nutty teas but this tea has a balance between sweetness, nuttiness a bit of fruitiness that works well together. I would definitely recommend this tea. I can’t say I liked it enough to want to stock up but I will have no problem finishing off the small amount I bought.

First steep it is strong on the cinnamon…but the second steep there is a definite baklava taste coming through and it is good. The third steep is not too bad, but the second steep is the best. I like this tea.

2nd steep: 6 minutes
3rd steep: 8 minutes

At first this tasted like a pretty generic cinnamon apple tea, but I’m liking it more as I sip at it. There’s a noticable nutty note which I like, and something on the finish which I can’t describe but is a little different.

It’s alright but nothing special. I can’t taste the oolong, and it doesn’t taste anything like baklava.

Dry, this smells lovely, all nutty and rosy… but steeped, there’s something poking out that I’m not liking. It smells a bit like cinnamon hearts… which is fine, but NOT anything like baklava to me. In fact… does baklava even typically contain cinnamon? If so, not very much. Anyhow, the flavour very sadly is pretty much as VariaTea described. Cinnamon water with a lingering sweetness that I don’t overly care for. The aftertaste is a touch nutty, but cinnamon is incredibly overwhelming here, to the point that I can’t taste oolong, rose, or really anything else. How unfortunate.

ETA: Second infusion I’m drinking cold… there’s more nuttiness, but it still tastes like cinnamon hearts. What a disappointing blend.

Weird they went so heavy on the cinnamon. I still need to try this, but it definitely doesn’t sound like baklava. I guess its Bubbie’s ‘special’ version of baklava haha

Fjellrev

Yeah, I agree, cinnamon would be kind of out of place here. But I’m still curious about this one. Always wanted a baklava tea. :)

VariaTEA

Fjellrev, I have about a cup worth left that I would be happy to pass along if you’d like.

Kittenna

I really wish the cinnamon wasn’t so potent :( Really thought this one would be yummy.

Fjellrev

Thanks for the offer, VariaTEA, but I’m planning on going to David’s tomorrow to grab the new ones! :) Thankful for their 10g allowance at times like this.

Lucy

I agree Fjellrev! I swoon over the baklava at Remedy Cafe, but this sounds like way too much cinnamon and way to little rose and honey. I still have to try it though. I wonder what its like iced?

Kittenna

I feel like it would be similar iced… I wonder about cold-brewed though…

Fjellrev

Lynne, that’s totally the same kind of baklava I imagine when I see the word. I’ll still try it too, though. Not sure if I’d like a cinnamon-heavy tea iced…

This smells sooooo good.

It tastes soooo good. Much happiness.

The flavors work really well together and it is just wonderful. I was worried that the rose would make it soapy, but I’m not really tasting it, thank goodness. The cinnamon is nice but not too strong, and the nutty flavor is just perfect.

I wonder how it resteeps….

The good news? I don’t really taste the oolong in this blend. The bad news? I am finding this to taste like super sweet cinnamon-rise water and I am not a fan. It’s just too sweet, though I guess that is what you might expect in a tea named for baklava.
