From DAVIDsTEA

Nothing makes the world go round like an ice cream sundae. But did you know they were actually invented to evade the law? In late 1800s America, selling ice cream soda was illegal. So a bunch of sweet-toothed bootleggers swapped out soda for syrup – and the sundae was born. Our frosty green tea version tastes like mint chocolate chip freedom. With fresh peppermint, rich cocoa nibs and sweet white chocolate, it’s a divinely refreshing treat. Chip chip hooray!

Ingredients: Cocoa nibs, green tea, peppermint, white chocolate (sugar, c ocoa butter, milk powder, whey powder, lactose, soy lecithin, natural vanilla), cocoa powder, stevia extract, natural flavouring.

Price: $9.98 per 50g

I was quite skeptical about trying this tea. Green tea and mint?! But boy, this tea reminds me not to judge a book by its cover lol It is fantastic. And the best part? It was a free cup of tea. Ah, life is good.

*Update: Tried it as a hot latte and it is pretty tasty. Did not think a green tea would be good as a latte but I was proven wrong. Tried it as an iced latte and it is actually the best way to have this tea in my opinion. Yum.

Final one of the Malt Shop collection.

This was the tea I was least excited about originally; it’s not that it sounded bad but I don’t love green tea and I’m pretty impartial towards chocolate teas in general. Plus, chocolate and green tea? I haven’t had wild success with that pairing in the past. Though it is worth note that as of this tasting note, this is the ONLY green tea in our collection with chocolate in it. So, if nothing else I feel like this fills a hole in that category a bit.

However, this one surprised me the most and actually wound up being my favourite of the collection. That said, it wasn’t without it’s flaws: both the hot and iced cups I tried had that melted down white chocolate goo/oiliness that no one likes experiencing in the mouthfeel and this does also have stevia in it which I did find I could taste somewhat, especially in the hot format.

What I absolutely adored about this one though was that the flavour reminded me SO HEAVILY of White Chocolate Frost which is one of my all time favourite Winter/Holiday teas; and one I’ve wished DT would bring back every year since the one it came out. This is as close a tea as I’ve ever experience! It’s super minty and refreshing, but has lots of creaminess/silkiness from the white chocolate. I couldn’t taste the green tea base at all in either the hot or iced cups so it also felt like it was a herbal, just like White Chocolate Frost. The small differences in flavour boiled down to a lack of peppercorns in this blend and some slight milk chocolate notes from the cocoa nibs/powder. Also lets be real, the peppercorns in WCF never had a super strong impact on that tisane in the first place anyway.

Both hot and iced versions of this were good, but iced ultimately comes out as my preferred of the two – less stevia taste overall. I can’t wait to try this one as a latte!

Friendly reminder that I do not numerically rate DAVIDsTEA blends as I’m currently employed there and it would be an obvious conflict of interest. Any blends you see with numerical ratings were rated prior to my employment there. These reviews are a reflection of my personal thoughts regarding the teas, and not the company’s.

Ahh, I was wondering how this would compare to white chocolate frost! I still have some of it. Can’t wait to try this one.

Ms. Strange, had you tried 52Teas White Christmas? It sounds similar but no stevia. I wonder how it would compare.

@Evol

I haven’t – but looking at the ingredients for it I do agree that they sound quite similar.

This tea reminds me of Snow Day, and that’s not necessarily a good thing; after all, I only drink Snow Day when I feel a sore throat coming on. The mint and chocolate flavours are very strong, and I’m disappointed that I can’t taste more of the green tea itself. If you blindfolded me and gave me a cup of this tea, I would swear that it’s a herbal infusion instead. In contrast to Strawberry Shake, which I drank yesterday, I don’t like Mint Chip Sundae nearly as much.
