From Den's Tea

Amoda Tea Monthly Box – March 2015_

Loved by anyone who tries it, this tea is a must-try. There is a perfect balance between the fresh, grassy taste of a Sencha (a Japanese green tea) and the sweet tropical pineapple. Very natural & authentic fruit flavour and a buttery creaminess make this tea an example of how flavoured tea should taste! Great as a cold-steeped tea.

Ingredients: Sencha green tea, dried pineapple, natural oil

Steep It
1.5 tsp per 8 oz cup
freshly boiled
1-3 minutes

From Den’s Tea:

The dried pineapple is mingled with quality Sencha in this taste of Hawaii. If you make iced tea, it makes a great addition to your summer tea time. One sip will transport you on a Hawaiian holiday, without the airfare.

Origin: Shizuoka
Harvest: A Blend of 2009 First & Second
Species: Yabukita

Tasting Profile:
The flavor of tropical pineapple and a hint of coconut force you to feel like you’re on vacation. Very sweet and creamy.

Den’s Preferred Brewing:
Water: 4oz boiled
Leaves: 2 grams or 1 heaping teaspoon
Steep: 30 sec
2nd Cup: Water boiled; Steep 15 sec

For 1 Iced Tea: Put 50% more amount of tea leaves into a teapot. Steep as directed for 1 hot tea. Once you brew it, put ices into the cup to lock the aroma.

Sipdown (142)!

This one’s from the March Amoda subscription box. I still haven’t finished all of my February teas, but when I saw this sample I couldn’t wait. I love pineapple; and I’ve been searching for the perfect pineapple tea to replace Butiki’s Flowery Pineapple Oolong which I’m coming closer and closer to finishing off.

I cold brewed my sample because I saw that this was recommended as an iced tea. I don’t regret the decision to do so even in the slightest. I’ll break it down in a second; but I’m just gonna jump the gun and say that, next to Flowery Pineapple Oolong, this is the best pineapple tea I’ve ever had. MAYBE even just as good. And considering this is on a green tea base that’s such high praise coming from me.

The pineapple flavour in this is over the top, 100% authentic, freshly cut pineapple with all the natural sticky sweetness and tang from the juices – and the tiny touch of coconut in here makes it pop and invokes a lovely tropical flavour that’s perfect for this time of year when all the snow’s melting and the weather is wishy-washy. It’s an instant vacation in a cup or, in this case, mason jar. Plus, the coconut just touches on a creaminess that really rounds out the brew.

I found that for the most part the green base was very masked by the extreme pineapple flavour; and that suits my tastes well. But, what I could taste blended near seamlessly into the fresh pineapple and provided a very faint grassyness that just worked well with the other flavours. It was highly refreshing and thirst quenching.

I know this isn’t oolong, and it doesn’t have the floral component that Butiki’s kick-ass pineapple tea has, but to be honest I didn’t miss it. I honestly think this is what I’m going to be replacing Flowery Pineapple Oolong with once I’ve finished it off. It was SO GOOD.

Good find Amoda, good find!

Yay! I’m glad you are having at least some success with the Amoda box. Alas, March is the last one.

TeaBrat

this is so yummy

Roswell Strange

I’m debating continuing with the subscription though; I’ve found some REALLY good ones but at this rate it’s more 1/4 or 1/2 success rate so I don’t know.

Kaylee

What else is in this month’s box?

Roswell Strange

Ginger Twist and Jasmine Mist, both from Sloane Tea Merchants and a straight black from a company I’m not familiar with.

Thanks!

Thank you stephanie for sharing this one with me via Terri :) I’ve been wanting to try this one forever but since i know i’m not the biggest sencha fan, haven’t gotten around to placing an order. With butiki gone, i need to find a suitable replacement for my pineapple tea that doesn’t have coconut. blech. this one is pretty good. It’s still not as pineappley as i want it to be but it IS pure pineapple and green stuff lol. I mean, i can taste the sencha, which is a good thing as far as teas – you want to be able to taste the base imo…but for me, i’d love this just a little more if the base backed off a bit and let the pineapple be stronger.

All that aside though, this might be a good fix for those times that i just want pineapple damnit! :) Thanks for letting me try this one stephanie!!

A refreshing Sencha with really nice passion fruit/pineapple notes. The taste isn’t quite as clean as I might like, the fruit and green tea tastes seem more to mush together than reinforce each other. But nevertheless this is much better than any bagged tea I’ve had and better than the teas I get from a place like Teavana.

When I originally made the tea I made it exactly to instructions using boiling water, 1 round teaspoon per 4 0Z and 30 seconds steep time. The result was a strongly aromatic and very tasty tea! But the second pull, again following instructions, boiling water and 15 seconds steep time, had a good aroma but almost no flavor. However the bigger problem for me is that I just don’t want nearly that much caffeine. I literally couldn’t sleep!

So I now make it using my normal way of 1 teaspoon for 16 OZs, 165 F water and 2 minute steeping. The result is a fruity (without being excessive) tea that tastes just as good on the second pull as the first.

I wanted something refreshing and calming after my run, so I chose this sample from KiwiDelight. This is the first of Den’s flavored senchas that I’ve had, although I did try and enjoy a couple of their plain ones. The leaves are dark yellow-green and flat steamed. Dry scent is spot-on fresh pineapple with lots of tartness. I steeped my leaves for 1 minutes at 175 degrees.

The brewed aroma reminds me of a fictional pineapple milkshake! It’s sweet and pineapple-y but also creamy. And that creaminess is present in the taste as well! The pineapple flavor almost reminds me of citrus in this, it’s definitely underripe fresh pineapple and isn’t very sweet. And it’s very nice this way! Definitely a tart pineapple milkshake or smoothie. :)

Just a note to say this is really good when it’s cold brewed. Also good when it’s hot! I don’t recall having such a nice pineapple flavored tea, ever. The few pineapple oolongs I’ve had were good, but I like this even more.

I’ve been craving green tea lately. I feel like I could drink a gallon of it every day if it didn’t get me a little too wired.

Preparation
Iced 8 min or more
Stephanie

Heck yes it is good cold brewed! :)

My favorite of Den’s fruity senchas. I can tolerate this one hot-brewed: the pineapple flavor doesn’t taste like it’s flavored as much as the others, and it overshadows the low-quality sencha. I definitely prefer it cold-brewed. It tastes so much like pineapple juice. Yum! Very refreshing too. And better than actual pineapple juice since it doesn’t feel like my gums are being thawed away (I read that pineapple has this enzyme or whatnot that is responsible for breaking down meat – now I know why don’t eating the stuff).

Courtney

Bromelain. It’s used for tenderizing meat. I’m allergic to it haha!

KiwiDelight

Ah so that’s what it’s called. I didn’t know there was an allergy. Yikes! D:

Courtney

Haha, well I’m sure anyone could be allergic to nearly anything. The enzyme breaks down under heat so I can eat grilled pineapple at least, which I actually prefer. :)

KiwiDelight

That sounds delicious. I think I could actually stand to eat pineapple that way. HAWAIIAN PIZZA THO.

Courtney

Haha I eat pineapple and cheese pizza only. So long as the pineapple is heated enough to break down the enzyme – good to go!

Stephanie

It breaks down meat? No wonder the inside of my mouth hurts if I eat too much fresh pineapple…its BREAKING DOWN MY MOUTH! :-O

I am not usually fan of flavored Tea’s, but this one is amazing. In my opinion it has stronger coconut overtones than pineapple. nevertheless I plan on purchasing more of this!

If you’re a fan of pineapple, this is it. The dried bits are actually papaya but the aroma is perfectly pineapple, and the flavor is subdued and wonderful. Subsequent 2 steeps were only necessary for 30 seconds each.
