From Fusion Teas

This distinctively delicious Argentinean yerba mate is as lively as its homeland. Sweet and savory notes abound, while flavors of nuts and citrus delight the palate.

This exceptional mate blend boasts huge lime slices, pistachios, almond slivers and dried coconut pieces added to earthy mate and rooibos. The result is a golden infusion that boasts aromas and flavors full of complexity. Roasted and creamy notes are balanced with juicy, fragrant lime and a rich nuttiness. Neither the tartness nor the earthiness overwhelm, and hint of lime linger in the aftertaste.

This mate is delicious alongside a lunch of hearty avocado and bacon sandwich on multi-grain bread. For dinner, consider serving your mate with honey glazed pistachio encrusted salmon.

Tasting Notes: nutty, creamy, tangy

Ingredients: Green yerba mate, organic green rooibos, organic rooibos, pistachios, coconut chips, lime leaves, lime zest, almonds, lime pieces, lime juice, natural flavor.

Steeping Suggestions: 1 1/2 tsp per 8 oz water @ 180 F, steep 5-10 min, sweeten to taste

Trying a re-steep from earlier today. I wanted so much to log more on this – write a real review – etc but I have felt cruddy all day – just don’t have the energy. Sorry. I don’t even know if Mates can be re-steeped. Need to look that up.

SimpliciTEA

Sorry to hear you aren’t feeling well. At least, it’s the weekend!

I don’t know either if mates can be resteeped, as I only did a pure one once. I have resteeped a mate/rooibos blend successfully, though.

I hope you feel better soon!

Azzrian

Thanks so much! I will be fine …. just need to slow down some. I did re-steep it – it was okay – nothing like the first brew – I don’t think it is like typical re-steeping though where you get different flavors – this one was the same just really weak. I googled it – some say you can – some say you can’t lol go figure!

Azzrian

Some notes: Trix Cereal after taste and smell when steeped.

lovely “fusion” of flavors.

Very smooth and easy to drink the lime is strong but not overwhelming.

My first mate

First aroma of dry leaf was more of pistachio, while the first taste of the steeped leaf was more of lime which is more subdued by the nut than flavored by it.

I would have enjoyed a bit more of a pistachio flavor myself but I absolutely love pistachios!

Missy

D’oh sorry you are feeling cruddy. On a plus note we got your package today! Very generous samples, thank you. Now I’m scouring your tasting notes so I can decide what else to put into a box to send out to you tomorrow. We brewed the Vanilla mint up and it’s excellent. Thanks again!

Azzrian

Awee thanks Missy – Im about to head to the sofa (again) and zone out lol. You two don’t have to add anything to my box … don’t worry about it girl! Its all good. :)

Missy

Oh yes we do, we like to share. We will send out the box UPS tomorrow morning. I know what’s in the box and you don’t, neener neener! Hope you feel better soon!

Azzrian

LOL well I will be a very happy camper! :) Thank you! Yeah I said I was going to the sofa – but I came back. Its like ummm i DO have a laptop I COULD take the computer with me. I think I was trying to tell myself I would sleep but that isn’t happening!

Missy

Hehe well you did just drink some mate… In that box there is a mate blend I had success with re-steeping. I steep first time at 185-190 ish for 3 minutes. The second steep I kick it up to about 205 and 4 minutes. That is as far as I’ve experimented.

Azzrian

LOL true! Wow thanks for that info! Excellent – I will try that. :) Thanks for sending a mate! This one here is the only one I have so it will be nice to try another!

Missy

Your welcome. :D Oh and I use about a teaspoon and 1/2 per cup. I tried just one teaspoon per cup but it was weaker than I liked.

Azzrian

Yeah and I like tea a little strong to begin with so that is good advice!

Sipdown! Although I cheated and sent the last of this to Boxermama so am only drinking a half cup.

I didn’t like this the first time I tried it, and sadly, I still don’t. Green mate, blech. And I’m not keen on the citrus here, even though I adore actual citrus fruit, and limes in particular.

Yeah, sadly, I really do not like this one. Glad the rest went to a willing home.

Ugh just got home and I am soooo tired. Sorry all for the hasty and short reviews. I ended up trying a bunch of new ones today by chance so bear with me!
This tasted like regular mate to me. The lime came through a little but not enough to identify it if I didn’t know it was there. Or maybe that was the pistachio? shrugs
Anyhow thank you Kristaleyn for this sample!! I have more than enough for another cup, maybe it will reveal some secrets ;)

Kittenna

I didn’t get much from this one either, sadly.

Indigobloom

ah. Well I do like Mate in general so it’s not so bad! :)

I am enjoying this cup more than I remember enjoying my first cup. I liked it fine before, but this time, I am finding it quite exceptional. The lime is the strongest note but it never gets too tart, and I like the way the sweetness of the nuts and coconut come through. The combination of rooibos and yerba mate is smooth and mild tasting.

A really nice cuppa!

Sooo uh pretty sure this was indigobloom again but if not, i apologise. This smells a lot like lime…or in the case of my other half – cloves? haha Theres a taste here there that i can’t identify…mostly this tea leaves me full of questions. Why does is taste like this? Does all mate taste like this? lol in all seriousness, leaving a raiting off this one because i’m just not sure what to make of it. I don’t hate it, but i don’t love it. :)

Kittenna

Not a fan of this one. I think this is from Indigobloom, but it may be via me in the first place :P

Indigobloom

me neither. Kittenna I think you may be right!

This is a great Mate. It blends the toasty-nuttiness of pistachios seamlessly with the tangy citrus flavor of lime so well. Not one flavor dominates, but it masks that musky herbal flavor that Mate has, which I find slightly strange.

Do you have some to share? Just enough for one cup please. I would love to try it!!

SunnyinNY

Thanks!!!

rmark25

your welcome!!! lol

SunnyinNY

I really wish I could like this flavor. I feel so bad. I love the smell, but that funky aftertaste really didn’t help me enjoy the cup.

rmark25

If you feel that bad there is only ONE thing to do…NYC has many tall buildings hint hint

rmark25

but seriously..it’s the Mate..it’s an acquired taste. It’s very herbal & earthy.

SunnyinNY

haha….good thing I know your sick sense of humor.
Seriously, I don’t think I’m going to care for yerba mates. I really didn’t like the funky aftertaste.

rmark25

then I think you will like Guayusa. It’s a similar herb used in South America. I believe it has anti oxidants and healing qualities, plus caffeine. It doesn’t have that earthy flavor, but more of a pleasant sweet flavor. I had a few samples from “Butiki Teas” that were really nice

SunnyinNY

I’ll try it.
I think I’m now afraid of yerba mates after this one.

Tea #19 from the ‘Here’s Hoping’ teabox.

Ooh, this is a good one. This was my first time trying mate, and I loved it. It also gave me the chance to realize that I like green rooibos but not red. The mate and green rooibos blended together give an earthy flavor that I really enjoy. On top of that base flavor is a bright, citrusy lime note that makes me oh so happy. Really, whoever blended this did an incredible job. I am a fan. I did not taste the pistachio, but that didn’t bother me since what I did taste was so good.

After I finished my first cup I went back and resteeped the leaves. I learned two things 1) this blend resteeps very well, and 2) my caffeine tolerance is quickly reached when drinking mate. My face started to feel all tingly which I did not take as a good sign. I’ll have to remember that in the future.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again…I really think that Fusion Tea Room has the BEST flavored Yerba Mates! This one pads my side of the debate!

When I first opened the package the aroma was first and foremost Pistachio and then lime. Once infused it was more lime then Pistachio! Regardless – this is highly aromatic and tasting! The taste is a lovely lime partnered with Pistachio! It’s RIGHT ON!!!! I also appreciate the Yerba Mate being paired with not only regular rooibos but green rooibos! GENIUS! I really like this one! YUM!!!!!!

Oh how I missed drinking mate! I’ve been chugging through my The Persimmon Tree stuff that I haven’t been drinking mate. This is the last Fusion tea sample that I haven’t tried yet.

I ordered this tea because pistachio tea just sounds crazy! I do like pistachios and spumoni ice cream. Is there a spumoni tea? /checks steepster. No? /checks google. No. OMG SOMEONE GET ON THAT!

DRY: Very weird smell. Weird as in it took me awhile to figure out what I was smelling. Lime and lemongrass. All other smells I have no idea.
As I was scooping out my tea, I got a huge 1" long by 0.5" wide lime slice. I removed it and put it back in the bag, I figured I’ll save that huge lime for another steeping.

STEEPED: Mysterious roasted or nutty smell mixed with other smells I can’t ID.

TASTE: An unusual strong, mellow and smooth nutty taste with a background of lime and lemongrass. Green mate comes through strong. Crisp lime aftertaste. No tart or bitterness. There is supposed to be coconut in this tea but I do not notice it.

WHO’D LIKE THIS TEA: Adventurous tea drinkers and green mate lovers.

COMMENTS: WHOA, this tea is WEIRD! I’ve never drank anything like this and it’s so wild and I can’t figure out whats going on!

Um, yeah. I’m not able to number rate this tea at this time because I just can’t tell you if I like it or not or compare it to other things I’ve drank. Yeah, I’ve drank green mate plenty of times, but this adds a weird addition with mystery nut taste (that I can’t ID as pistachio. Unless this is what pistachio is supposed to taste like steeped?). The lime is quite good in this, not tart or bitter like I said earlier.

Back to the spumoni tea.. SOMEONE BLEND THIS! Chocolate pieces, pistachio, vanilla bean. I dunno what kinda tea to stuff in it, stuff something in it, but make it taste spumoni. Of course, slide me some of this tea for free.. ya know, for coming up with it.

I’m now going crazy and tweeted 52 teas and Davidstea to make me spumoni tea. Must have it! MIIINEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

Kittenna

I have never heard of spumoni. But that sounds delicious!
