From Golden Moon Tea

Let’s hear it for some of the worlds best tea gardens! They’ve given us three pure Indian teas we can blend with a little Chinese Keemun. The result is a coppery liquor that excites our taste buds with its brisk and complex flavor. The flavor is a bit toasty with a bit of fresh gardenias as a high note. Like most traditional English Breakfast teas, it is great with a spot of milk and a spoonful of sugar.

It’s funny, because when I started drinking this, I didn’t necessarily think of it as an English Breakfast blend (?!) — possibly because of all of the different types of tea mixed in. Both steeps from my sampler were without sugar or milk, and quite delicious. It stands out as predominantly sweeter than most blends to me, fresh, with a few smoky undertones. Never got bitter, quite refreshing, and held up for the two steeps very well. That being said, I don’t know if this is heavy enough for me to drink in the morning; it may just be a little too flippant English dandy for my tastes!

GM sample #4/31

Not my favorite breakfast tea. Decent, but I think there’s too much Ceylon&Darjeeling in the blend for my taste. It’s subtle, for a breakfast tea, softer than an Assam and not as complex/chocolatey as Keemun or Yunnan. It’s good, but not great. Better with milk, but a little too brisk for me without.

Leaves looked and smelled wonderful and the tea smells even better.
It’s slightly bittery but in a good way… The aftertaste is yummy and smooth. Hint of floral, bit malty… All together a very good english breakfast.

I usually hate English Breakfast, more of an Irish Breakfast fan. I always find it too astringent and bossy in my taste buds.

This is the best English Breakfast I’ve had, even though I am not a fan of the style. It’s smooth, brisk, and strong.

After having such a great cuppa tea yesterday I figured I’d go with another classic black tea from my golden moon sampler. made with a splash of skim milk and a packet of equal.

Smells like english breakfast, tastes like english breakfast. Definitely more flavorful than the bagged versions I was drinking almost every day a few years ago.

The flavor has a lot of body, and I definitely taste some floral notes but overall it’s not that special. Still a delicious tea but if I was going to drink something every day, it would not be this. I’m enjoying this cup a lot.

Golden Moon Sampler Tea #7:
Grabbed this for my morning tea. Late as usual, steeped for like, a minute because I had no time! Surprisingly, despite the short steeping time it had some taste! I was quite shocked. And kind of impressed. Good job English Breakfast!
It tasted quite good, too. Will have to do a longer steeping later to see how it turns out.

It’s good. Pretty strong too, which is what I needed the other night. It’s got a subtle maltiness from the assam, which was nice. Still, this didn’t jump out at me as being anything super special the way GM’s Sinharaja did. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a very solid tea. Just nothing out of the ordinary. I probably won’t buy a whole tin of this but I enjoyed it and it definitely hit the spot the other night.

In general, I’m not picky about my English Breakfast blends, as I usually load them with milk and drink them first thing in the morning when I’m still half-asleep. But today I’m sipping this at my desk at work, where I don’t have any milk to add, and I’m impressed by how well this stands up on its own! It’s much more complex than I would have expected, sipping in fruity and sweet but rounding out with hints of malt and smoke in the aftertaste. The flavor is robust, but still smooth with no bitterness or astringency. This Golden Moon sampler continues to impress me!

Nice morning cup. Not at all bitter. The Keemun offsets the blend of Indian teas nicely. Or is it the other way around? Who cares, right?! Great way to start the day…or the afternoon, for that matter.

I’ve decided to try and compare all the ‘breakfast’ teas in my sampler today. English breakfast has become the almost stereotypical ordinary tea. However that doesn’t mean it can’t also bee a good tea.

This one has that classic rich, reddish colour and toasty aroma and flavour along with a solid, middling robustness. I can taste hints of malt and maybe just the barest trace of muscatel astringency from the darjeeling. I enjoyed it plain as well as with milk and a touch of honey. This is the sort of tea the world runs on.

Like this review immensely! “Middling” is a nice descriptor.
