From Good Life Tea

This tea is fresh and smooth with excellent depth and body. A beauty to behold with an aroma the senses run willingly embrace. The cherry flavoring and subtle rose hints give the tea a wildly exotic character.

An excellent green tea for those who find green teas to be too grassy, vegetal or just “too green”. The delicate cherry and rose aromas moderate the “green” characteristics providing a surprisingly pleasant tea which has even put smiles on the faces of the grumpiest of grumps.

Serve it as an after dinner tea. This tea has a way of freshening your palate so you can enjoy your desert as it was meant to taste.

Sencha style tea with rose petals. From China. Organic and beautiful to look at with light pink rose petals floating among the green leaves.

Enjoyed cold as well. High in antioxidants. Wildly popular and repurchased often.

After only two days of waiting, my 6 tea sampler pack from Good Life Tea arrived! Since it’s a bright and sunny morning, I decided that the Kyoto Cherry Rose Green Tea would be a good way to start the day.

This tea has a nice, light aroma. The sugary scent isn’t overpowering, and the cherries mix nicely with the floral.

The initial sip is more floral than cherry, but the cherry makes its appearance later on, slowly rising to blend with the floral and leaving a pleasantly sweet aftertaste. The green tea base gives this a light, refreshing body, with a smooth consistency throughout.

While writing this review, I’ve been avoiding using the word “rose” to describe the taste, because I don’t really get a rose taste from this… it’s far too light. As I continue to sip this tea, I realize that the taste reminds me more of cherry blossoms than roses. It’s very pleasant, and not overbearing.

I purposefully followed the instructions on the packet (1tsp/cup at 212 F for 3-7 mins) for this first test, but I think I’ll cut down to .5tsp/8oz ratio in the future (or maybe a 2 min steep time), since I prefer my teas a little weaker. I didn’t add any sugar, since I wanted to get a good taste of the tea itself.. and frankly I don’t think this tea needs any additional sweetening.

Overall, I enjoyed this tea and am considering purchasing more to give as a gift.

(2 cups later)
Okay, so I tried adding a little rock sugar to the tea (1st steep still), and boy was that a bad idea… it ended up bringing out the floral sweetness, which was too much flower for me. If swimming in a pool of flowers is your thing, then by all means go ahead, but I had a hard time finishing that cup.

I tried it with a dollop of honey too (new cup, same steep), and that turned out much better. Adding a bit of honey gives it a nice sweetness, without being in-your-face sweet. I think I still prefer this tea without any sweetening though, but I’m the kind of person who usually prefers unsweetened tea.

Ugh, I am having the worst writers block right now, which is so annoying! Usually on days where I don’t do anything constructive (I have had a really off, pain filled day today, yuck) I can think of some clever story or nerdy reference. Nope, not today, sorry everyone but yours truly is off in la-la land with her head in the clouds.

Today’s tea does not have its leaves in the clouds, but is more down to earth and floral. Good Life Tea’s Kyoto Cherry Rose Organic Green is a blend of cherry flavoring, sencha style Chinese green tea (meaning it is steamed rather than pan fried) and rose petals. You all know my weakness for roses in tea, they just smell so wonderful and taste wonderful as well. In theory this tea is a really good green tea for those who are not a fan of teas that are too grassy, vegetal, or just green, a good ‘intro to green teas’ kind of tea. The aroma of this tea is a nice blend of cherries and roses with just a gentle touch of the green base. It is very much the green of fresh vegetation, like the leaves of a rose bush or cherry tree. Sweet and summery, this tea evokes gardens in full bloom.

Once the leaves have been steeped in their little basket, the aroma of roses and cherries practically fills up my tea lair. One thing I will give this tea credit for, the cherries smell like fresh fruit and not fake cherry candy, that is something I always appreciate. Underneath the aroma of cherries and roses there is a gentle hint of vegetation. The liquid without its soggy leafy friends is sweet, a blend of freshly mown hay, honey, roses in full bloom, and fresh cherries.

The taste is, well, light and uninspiring, which is a surprise after such a strong aroma. There is a light rosy taste, a bit of freshly mown hay and green vegetation, and a tiny bit of cherry at the finish. I think if I first sipped this tea without sniffing it first I would not be disappointed, the tea is very light and the flavors are clear, just very delicate. However I did sniff it and was expecting rich roses and sweet cherry juice, more body to this tea. I find myself a bit confused on how to think about this tea, on the one hand I enjoyed its delicate flavor, on the other hand I was expecting more.
