I feel like the odd man out with this tea. When I first found an interest in loose leaf teas I came across recommendations for this one quite often. Everyone seems to rave about it. After trying it (well, after buying a full tin) I have to admit it’s a little lost on me. It’s perfectly fine, but not something I would choose if there were other options available. I find it quite astringent, and the bergamot is absolutely indecipherable. It’s all berry and vanilla to me. I’ve been mixing it with Earl Grey just to use up the tin and have found it’s very nice that way, but I don’t think I will be making a second purchase of this one.

This is one of the teas that the bookstore I work at stocks without fail, so I decided to do some ‘research’ so I could make good recommendations to the customers (that’s my story and I’m sticking to it). ;)

I’ve always found that Harney & Sons manages to straddle the line between putting out a high quality product but at the same time still being affordable and accessible even for those not well-versed in tea knowledge. This tea is good example – it’s refined with the sweet caramel and creamy vanilla flavours but at the same time the hint of tangy bergamot is familiar (just about everyone has tried earl grey at some point in their lives). I could see this tea becoming a staple in my cupboard.

Taking a wee little break from tasting all of my new Kusmi teas and relaxing with this. From all the first-time notes I’ve been writing the past couple of days, it’s nice to just sit back and sip without thinking too hard about the flavor profile. I’m having it with sugar and whole milk this time around, and I think next time I try this I might do two sachets if I’m going to put milk in.

Do any of you lovely people have a good method for making hot or cold tea lattes? Please share if so, I have several teas I would like to try this way! :D

I have my comfort teas that I like when I don’t want to think to hard or I just need something stable and normal and to turn out right.

But I am curious to hear the answers to the latte question.

boychik

Sometimes i add condensed milk. But i can eat it right out the can. pls dont judge…

Cameron B.

Hah, I am definitely not one to judge when it comes to indulging! I have the most horrible sweet tooth ever, especially for creamy things. :P

boychik

Drooling…

Cameron B.

I haven’t tried it yet but I might have to… I never though of adding it to tea! What have you done?! :P

boychik

i think its better than milk and sugar, and i never buy cream. its the best consistency. but dont overdo, while its hot it seems not enough and when it cooled could be sickening sweet. in my country we dont add anything to a tea, drinking on a side with cond. milk, or preserves,or pastries. BTW many yrs ago i was in Russian Tea Room with my hubby. thats where i got my first cup of Prince Vladimir with red currant preserve on a side.

Skulleigh

I use half & half and splenda. I put them in the bottom of my cup and then froth them with a battery powered milk frother. Once it has frothed up, I add the tea.

Cameron B.

@boychik – Yeah I noticed that the sweetener is more and more effective as the teas cools when I was trying all those Russian blends. Luckily they all tasted better warm anyway!

@Skulleigh – Do you use less water when you brew the tea or do you do it normally? I could see it making sense to reduce the amount of water proportionally to the volume of the milk you’re adding.

Skulleigh

Not generally, but I tend to use a little more tea than I really need to, so it’s probably stronger anyway. I use big mugs.

Oh my goodness, where do I begin?

This was the first tea that blew me away with it’s warm aroma with hints of vanilla and caramel. Yet the taste is nothing like it! It’s a masked with a dark fruity taste. It’s bold and delicious and goes down smooth.

I’ve been on a major flavoured tea bender this week and this has been a trustworthy companion. When I’m trying to save some WP’s Golden Orchid, I drink this and it almost makes me forget about the other one for a bit.

With a name like Paris I thought this tea would be an Earl Grey but reading the description it’s more of an Earl Grey with a big twist. Caramel and vanilla tones and light bergamot, sounds interesting. Not sure it’s my idea of Paris but at least it’s black tea based and will suit me well this afternoon.

Raw tea is sweet and perfumed with high vanilla and bergamot tones, which actually smell very nice together.

I put a small piece of rock sugar and a drop of milk into this tea, was in the mood for something sweet and creamy so hopefully it will suit the flavours.

Flavour is different from it’s scent, berry is the strongest flavour which was a complete surprise as I didn’t smell any at all. With the berry is a cocoa, dark caramel flavour with only a hint of vanilla/cream in the after taste. It’s too different to be lumped in with Earl Grey so it’s not what I thought it would be at all, that can be good and bad.

A nice tea but it’s just not for me, not a huge berry fan and while this is pleasant enough for me to drink my pot full I would by no means think of re-stocking this in the future.

Cold brew for the afternoon…and finally, sipdown! It took me a decently long time to get through the 4 oz tin. It was always an enjoyable, fruity and crisp black tea blend to have around, but there are many more to explore, so I’m not in a hurry to restock.

How many teas do I really love enough to want to stock 4 oz (or more) at a time? That is the question…

Fjellrev

It takes me so, so long to get through their 4 oz. tins in particular. Not sure why. And then it gets old and sits there for even longer…

Mikumofu

And 4 oz is still among the smaller of their bulk options, I can’t imagine how long it would take for some of the others!

Fjellrev

Seriously! It’s a shame they don’t have a 2 oz. option. But that said, congrats on actually getting through this one! I’ve had my 4 oz. of SoHo for over two years now and I feel like I’ll never finish it. Barely got through my tin of Florence.

Just not feelin’ this one like I used to. It’s definitely still and excellent tea and one that used to be my second favorite black tea, but lately I am just not that into it. I think it’s the bergamot.

Today I steeped it lower than I do at home and I forgot about it while it was steeping, so it got a bit bitter thanks to user error… but the smell is just way too strongly bergamot for me right now. I drank every bit of it, because honestly it’s still a great tea even when I’m not in the mood for it.

Aw. This is still one of my must haves, I fell in love with it when I first tried it and that hasn’t changed! I love EG teas and bergamot though

lolainred

This is my fiance’s favorite black tea, but he like you, loves EG and bergamot. I think I’m just going through a anti-bergamot phase, because I used to really love this.
