From Harney & Sons

The rich flavors of Thailand are the inspiration for this tasty blend. It is a combination of green tea, lemongrass, coconut and ginger.

Backlog:

A really tasty blend that took me a bit by surprise. I expected the ginger to be rather strong and overpowering, but it’s rather mild and gentle here. Just a subtle hint of its fire. Not enough to kick the palate … but more like a gentle nudge.

The green tea is silky, buttery, sweet, and creamy. Lightly vegetative. The lemongrass adds a nice citrus-y note that brightens the cup a little bit, and the creaminess is accentuated by the vanilla and the coconut. Really tasty!

Another sample from the lovely lala :) not sure what drove me to ask for a coconut sample but I did! And it’s not too shabby. I couldn’t a lot of this but a cup or two every other month would be acceptable lol

Thanks again lala

So today is the Duke/UNC game, which means it’s practically a holiday in our state. We have plans to watch the game at a local sports bar, and my fiancee has us on a strict schedule of what time we need to leave in order to get a good table. I kind of wish it was one of those lazy Saturdays where we had no plans. I’m right in the middle of rearranging the tea cupboard and found the perfect cute little tins at Michaels for $0.50, so I’m dying to get everything neatly organized. But I’m definitely not missing the biggest game of the year, so the tea organization will have to wait until tomorrow.

I generally love anything from Harney’s, so I was excited to try this sample from Alphakitty. I like most of the ingredients in this blend – lemongrass, coconut and vanilla, but ginger is so hit or miss for me. Ach, sadly this one seems very gingery. It’s definitely the strongest flavor, and I am only sensing a little of the coconut and vanilla. Those two seem to be contributing more to the creaminess of the tea, rather than the flavor. I can only detect a little of the lemongrass, and there is a strong, lingering ginger aftertaste. I don’t hate this tea, but it’s not exactly what I was expecting. I will have to try it cold brewed, like Alphakitty suggests. And hey, if Duke beats the tarholes tonight I will gladly drink this tea every game day! :)

-Dry blend has long flat green tea leaves and lemongrass.
-Dry leaves smell lightly of green tea and ginger. Tea liquor aroma is of coconut and ginger.
-Tea liquor is a clear pale greenish yellow color.
-Strong ginger flavor with a soft coconut vanilla finish. Lingering spicy ginger aftertaste.
-Best with sweetener.
-Fair tea. Very strong ginger taste that overwhelms all other flavors.

The whole university level sporting madness is just something we don’t get here. We don’t real.y have a high enough population for such large sporting programs at unis. If you want a sporting career, you attend the Australian institute of sport, or get drafted straight into the AFL. The whole university level sporting fanaticism thing fascinates me!

Sorry about the tea! I hope Duke won! (And yes, I know Duke is a university, but only because of One Tree Hill…)

Tabby

I’ve got a sample of this coming on Tuesday! Even if you didn’t like it much, I still might, haha. But this is a good heads-up!

ashmanra

This is one of the few teas from Harney that other people seem to love and I just can’t get into it.

Josie Jade

TassieTeaGirl, in North Carolina we have a lot of good colleges right in one area, so there’s always a lot of sports competition. I think the Duke/UNC rivalry is the biggest rivalry in all of sports in the US, though. But that may just be how it seems from my perspective :)

Tabby, I hope you like it more than I did!

Ashmanra, I’m glad I’m not the only one. I sometimes don’t mind ginger in a black tea, but with green tea it just seems to be too much spicy ginger for me.

Alphakitty

Aw, sorry you didn’t like this one! The ginger is definitely strong but I am a bit of a ginger addict haha

Josie Jade

I’m glad I got to try it, Alphakitty! I probably would’ve bought a whole tin not knowing and then been stuck with it!

Tea from Tea Bird!!

This one is in the pyramid bag. As fussy as I am, I really enjoy just popping in one of these things at work :) I really like the lemongrass flavor, followed by a hint of coconuty gingery yum on the tail end. The green tea is there as more of a support rather than a super green tea flavor.

I’m going to have to make this again in order to give it a numerical rating because when I went to make this tea, I found much of my water leaking out of the bottom of my hot pot! I mean, a river! I had to drink this poor tea in a state of anger and frustration! When I googled this problem, it seems that many people experience this issue after a few months with the Rival Hot Pot. Leaking water and electricity are clearly not an option so it looks like I’m in the market for a work friendly electric tea kettle. I’m going to start the research, but if you have one you love, let me know!!!!

Why do they make things so poorly these days!?!? I just had to re-sew the pocket on my coat today and now this.

I know! I just bought I nice purse last November and the thread of the strap broke so now I have to resew it!

I have a Russel Hobbs electric kettle that I really like. I don’t use it now that I have a Zojirushi unless I’m making coffee for company in a french press or something, but I like it. No plastic involved where the hot water is, and it heats up water really quickly. The downside is that the carafe isn’t insulated so it doesn’t keep your water hot for hours, but for pots of tea it should work pretty well!

awww :( that is awful

teabird

So sad! I have an Aroma electric kettle that was pretty cheap, and has worked very well for the last two years. No plastic bits getting heated, no cord while you’re trying to pour, no minimum water quantity. There is an auto-shutoff, and like sohpistre’s it doesn’t keep your water warm well, but it does reheat it quite fast. http://www.amazon.com/Aroma-AWK-115S-X-Press-2-Liter-Cordless/dp/B000KDVTJI

I couldn’t bear the thought of not having tea tomorrow at work so I ran down the street to Williams Sonoma and got a Breville Variable Temperature Electric Kettle. I feel like I just bought a Rolls Royce! But it got good reviews and the price I paid was $20 more than the cheapest price I saw online for it – which makes me think that in the week it would haven taken for it to get to me I would have spent $20 in takeout tea at Starbucks that I wouldn’t have enjoyed nearly as much as my handpicked selection! So! Sorry for my jumbled thoughts but I’m very excited :)

I am reading the manual now – I won’t have time to fuss with it until tomorrow because I have class this afternoon, but tomorrow morning I will give it a test drive!

AmazonV

I LOVE MINE enjoy yours :)

JacquelineM

Thank you!!! I’m all a flutter!!! Am I right in my reading that you can press the buttons to get the various temps, but you can’t program a temp (like say I want 180 but there is only a 175 button and 185 button. I would have to use 185 and then use my thermometer if I wanted 180, right?

SoccerMom

ditto AmazonV

AmazonV

i usually go higher and let it cool to the temp i want, so yes go 185 and when it stops give it a few second then start thermometering it-or just try higher or lower, i am bad and just go close enough dump into teapot unless it’s my first time with the tea (some teas tolerate my abuse better than others)

ARG, my tea stash went out of control recently and I’m out of nice tins again. I got 3 big ugly cookie tins that I need to modpodge pretty with crazy pink christmas paper, which I’m going to do once I’m done this tea! I believe I got this tea in a trade with Rachel Sincere, ty! This tea is in a bag.

STEEPED: Very pale yellow tea – sweetless coconutty mellow smell.

TASTE: Okay, this is interesting in flavor. First off, very light in flavor. What I do get is creamy mouth coconut and buttery coconut fleshy taste up front. The flavor is close to real coconut. Light green flavor, barely there. Aftertaste of a little lemongrass. Not really getting the ginger. Overall I find this tea kinda savory as it is not sweet at all.

COMMENTS: I’d love to have this tea with some curry or thai food – that would be yummy! I think this tea could chill out a mouth burning with spicy food! However, it seems too light of a tea for me to enjoy whenever I want. Next time I’ll try a longer steeping and hopefully the ginger and green comes out more. In the end, I do enjoy the fun pairing with coconut and lemongrass.

Appearance: large cut green, bi colored
Aroma when Dry: coconut, slight sweetness, vanilla creamy
After water is first poured: sweet coconut grassiness
At end of first steep: lemony, nutty creamy coconut
Tea liquor:
At end of steep: very light yellow– green
Staple? Would be if the brand was not so liberal about artificial ingredients.
Time of day preferred: afternoon, evening
Taste:
At first: grassy coconut, chased by creaminess, hints of lemongrass
As it cools? Coconut changes texture slightly, grassy notes heighten, texture gets silky, creamy, still no ginger notes
Additives used (milk, honey, sugar etc)? Tried part of the cup also with milk

Without milk:
Lingers? Yes, smooth grassiness, hints of the lemongrass stay longest

With milk: gets velvety, almost fluffy, lemongrass fades, coconut and vanilla most noticeable
Lingers? Yes, creaminess hints of sweetness stay

Second steep(8 min): lighter creamy, grassy, lemongrass notes heighten
Still lingers, lemongrass mostly, coconut notes closing

Third steep 3-5min: still creamy, lemongrass gets a bit bolder

Preparation
190 °F / 87 °C 6 min, 0 sec
Miss Starfish

This is one of my favourites. The lemongrass is lovely with the coconut isn’t it?

Kasumi no Chajin

yes, though I wish the ginger was more prominent.

Alphakitty

This is my absolute favorite tea!

Tea of the afternoon…..

…..After shoveling the driveway. I was looking for something to make me forget the snow for a little while. This definitely works. I like that the green is mild, the coconut flavor is most prominent, but I have to say the ginger might be a deal breaker for me. I guess the jury is still out.

I didn’t get ginger, maybe it’s because i like my ginger stronger & was expecting more. I’m not sure…….

Traveling Tea Box C #24
Wow! You can smell the lemongrass as this steeps. But the taste is less potent. I loved the combo of coconut in here it tamed the lemon grass and hid the ginger. Perfect:) ginger is not my cup of tea. This was fun to try but not something for me.

Alphakitty included some of this in Momo’s traveling teabox. thank you! Now this could easily be one of my favorite green teas! I love this blend. The ingredients really work nice together. Coconut, ginger, lemongrass. I don’t find too much of the lemongrass, but the coconut is sweet and smooth. Before I took a sip I could tell the flavor would be mostly coconut. I usually don’t like ginger but this works perfectly here. It gives the flavor a nice kick, otherwise the coconut might be too sweet. This one is a dreamy, creamy green… and like I said, one of my favorite greens.

I like a little ginger in my tea, but I’ve had trouble finding a palatable technique for brewing with ginger. Usually I cut a thin thin slice and throw it in the bottom of my thermos, but the ginger gets pretty strong after a few hours. This time I cut (and peeled) a thick slice and brewed it directly with the leaves and it worked out really nice.

Cofftea

lol I’ve never thought of doing it any way but steeping it right with the leaves.

joshuasbones

I always thought you should add it like milk or sugar, right into the tea.

Cofftea

No, I think treat it like an herb. But that’s just me.
