Random sample!

I had to get this one when I made my Herbs & Kettles sample order a while back, because it sounded interesting. I’ve never had galangal by itself, but I know it’s similar to ginger (apparently with citrus and pine notes as well). I don’t taste anything remotely close to that here. The black tea is very mineral, it actually tastes a bit like charred wood or ash, but is only slightly smokey. Not sure how else to describe it but like licking a volcanic rock LOL. It definitely tastes more like a Chinese black tea than an Indian one, and also reminds me somewhat of a heavily charcoal roasted oolong. Interesting, but not quite what I was hoping for, and where’s the galangal?

Dustin

Galangal is an integral flavor in the Thai Tom Kha soup. If you want to try some fresh you can find it at MT Market in north Austin in the produce section. Man I miss that store!

Dustin is right, it’s a distinctive flavor, but I wouldn’t liken it to volcanic rock! Not sure why it’s in the name of this tea if it’s not apparent in the flavor profile. I buy Galangal from Penzeys spices. They have stores around North America, including Dallas-TX and Houston-TX. Online sales, too. I just Luv Penzeys!

TeaEarleGreyHot – my husband made a huge built in spice rack for me and when he started to load the spices in it, he said, “I thought you had a tea problem, but it looks like you have a spice problem!” Almost all of them are Penzey’s. The (adult) kids get Penzey’s gift cards in their stockings, and sometimes new spices as well. I need to place an order this week. Our “local” brick and mortar store was an hour and fifteen minutes away and closed permanently after Covid.

Ashmanra, that are some lucky adult kids! My nearest Penzeys store is just over an hour drive from me, in Naperville Illinois. I don’t mind the drive so much since discovering that it’s only two blocks from an Adagio Tea store and a Chocolateria. :-)

TeaEarleGreyHot – that’s sounds like the setting for a perfect Saturday!
