From Mahamosa Gourmet Teas, Spices & Herbs

Black gunpowder is also called “Black Pearls”. In Chinese gunpowder tea is written as 珠茶 and pronounced “zhū chá”. Gunpowder also comes in a green tea variety. The black gunpowder leaf is carefully processed into small black pellets by hand and according to tradition by experienced tea experts. The leaves are withered, steamed, rolled, and then dried. The name “gunpowder” comes from the resemblance to the black powder used in guns. Production of gunpowder tea goes as far back as the Tang Dynasty, 618-907 A.D. This leaf presents a pleasantly aromatic, mild and full-bodied taste with a very slight smoky note.

Leaf: Pearl-like, shiny black

Body: Full

Aroma and Taste: Aromatic, mild, round, slightly smoky notes

Intensity: Medium

Color: Medium to dark green

My samples from Amanda came today, thanks so much to her. This is one of the ones that she gave me because she didn’t like it, and I have to say I’m glad about that because I think it’s great (though I can understand why some people might not like it). It’s definitely smokey and full bodied, with hints of chocolate and a little sweetness to round out the smokiness. I love it, thanks Amanda.

I don’t think Amanda likes smoke. I do!

momo

lol I really don’t, I keep trying but I don’t think it’s going to happen. I’m so happy this went to someone who will enjoy it though!

Travelling tea box!

So this isn’t a bad little tea. It’s the first gunpowder that I’ve tried and I like how the smoky flavour isn’t up in your face. I found it to be a nice black tea with a hint of smokiness at the back of the sip. Not sure if I’d pick this up as a regular in my cupboard but I would totally drink it again!

I really don’t know why I got this, I guess I was just fascinated by it. But I think I will stick with green gunpowder tea.

It’s pretty bold, which I don’t mind, but the smoky flavor is just really off putting. It’s not like full on smoky but at the same time it’s not just subtle. Those would be okay. But right in the middle just ugh. I might see about steeping it a shorter time and see if that helps.
