From Nio Teas

This is our darkest Hojicha, bringing a powerful roasted flavor to the palate. Compared to the Kawabataen and the Noike Hojicha, this tea has more of a coffee flavor and a heavier mouthfeel. Because it contains only stems, it is also the lowest in caffeine. The flavor begins with a strong, coffee-flavored kick, followed by a lingering wooden note. The tea has a nice creaminess to it that balances out some of the stronger roasted notes.

This tea was grown in the mountains of Takachiho in Miyazaki prefecture. Although Kamairicha is a relatively rare tea, this region has become famous for it. The farm of Mr. Issin includes 4 small fields spread around the village, all of which are higher elevation. It was a great privilege to tour all of these fields and take in the picturesque views of this beautiful region.

Nio advent 2023. Hopefully, this is the right one. It smells divine. I love the roasty toasty notes you get in a hojicha. As the tea steeps it smell burnt. Lots of burning. Burning green pepper…. I hate green peppers… Ah, but the liquor smells lovely. Definitely a darker hojicha roast. The charcoal notes are quite a bit higher than the toasty notes. An interesting sweet note with the first sip after it’s cooled a bit. I don’t think this would make as quite a good latte as the lesser roasted versions.

I also hate/do not at all eat green peppers. But right before I read your note I was thinking what I should do with the remainder of a red pepper in the fridge… I also love banana peppers..

For real, I actually bought a travel gongfu set just for that and started a weekly tasting session for Thursday mornings.
We lost my dad last year and it was a good time to take stock on our busy lives and bettering the time we have to spend together. :)

That is wonderful!

The only tea my mom made or drank was sweet Southern iced tea – three cups of sugar to a little over a gallon. Ha ha! Almost pure syrup, and believe me, everyone loved it! But she would have loved getting into fine tea, I just know she would have, and we have had such good times laughing and bonding over it. I have been missing her a lot lately.

Nio Teas Advent Calendar 2022 – Day 5

Odd steeping parameters for a hojicha, 160°F? But I followed them, because why not.

It’s definitely a dark roast hojicha, very deeply toasty with an almost charcoal note to it. It’s not super strongly flavored though, although that could be due to the low water temperature I used. But kuki-hojicha does tend to be more mellow in general. Still very cozy, smooth and dark with woody notes that turn to dark roast coffee as I hold the tea in my mouth for a few moments.

Not terribly complex, but a perfect tea for December! Although, it was 75°F here today… (sighs)

We’ve had rain and hail all week here, but today it snowed! Lovely when you’re home getting cosy, but I was out working and it was awful :/
