GABA stands for Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid. Through a series of research, Japanese scholar Omori Masashi ( 大森 正司 ) confirmed it has a very powerful antihypertensive effect thanks to its extremely high content of γ-Aminobutyric acid (GABA) compared to other teas. The GABA content adds a thick layer of baked sweet potato taste to the tea and is proven to offer the drinker a soothing or relaxing feeling. GABA processing, which involves shade growing and then nitrogen sparging was developed by the Japanese and later perfected by the Taiwanese. The result is a tea that tastes great, at once stimulating and soothing to the nervous system.

1113 tasting notes

The first of the gaba teas from TS I ordered from the sampler during Black Friday.
Ended up drinking three different sessions to get a decent grasp on how I felt about this tea. While I now great things are going to come from TS, this one just didn’t give me ‘wow’ I was looking for. While the third and fourth steep are quite enjoyable, something about the mild smell contributes to something I taste s mildew. I don’t believe all gaba have such a taste to it because I’ve had two more (one of which was also a TS tea). I think it has something to do with the roast profile of this tea. I’ll try the other s from TS and see how they compare.


I have a sample of this on the way. Will have to see if I detect a similar mildew note

I got the mildew. This one was way too brothy for me. I still have some and have yet to drink any of more. It might make a better cooking tea, though.

With that said, the GABA Oolong is less roasted and very muscatel. It actually tasted a lot like a Darjeeling. The GABA Green is a bit more like a golden lily oolong (Jin Xuan for a reason) but still more on that spectrum if you haven’t had it.

1497 tasting notes

The last of my GABA sampler. This one was my least favorite so far, but it was still pretty good. The reviews on their website were pretty accurate, with the “roasted sun-dried tomato” description coming to mind. So do the notes of mushrooms and sweet potatoes. It was very, very soupy and savory. It was practically a broth. The roasted nuts oolong quality was there, but under everything else. As for steeping, another accidental gong fu western combo.

I would recommend this one to try something different, and maybe even more as a culinary tea than anything else. This would make some awesome flavoring for chicken or dip. Or, it might be good while eating a sandwich or bite sized meals. Again, not as sweet as the other three of the bunch, but likable.
