Last spring we introduced this tea as the world’s first commercialized GABA tea produced from Red Jade TRES-18 tea cultivar. Early adopters have quickly proven that this tea is here to stay because it’s good! We had to wait until this spring for Mr. Wu to make a new production. Here it is!
GABA Tea is one of a rare bread of teas that was initially developed for its purported health benefits. If you are not familiar with this aspect, check out the info tab. Now that this is said, we need to admit that the best thing about GABA tea is that it is wonderfully good in the cup! The special, oxygen-deprived environment that leaves are submitted to increases the content of GABA while slowly oxidizing them. This also smoothes out the tannins leaving a crisp tart fruity taste that is quite apealing. This unique production using organically grown Red Jade T-18 cultivar is very different tasting than our GABA oolong and our classic Red Jade Black Tea. It proposes the full bodied flavour of a Red jade Black tea with its fresh minty attack and tangy fruit compote finish that is both generous and refreshing. Just like it’s cousin, this GABA tea not only makes a beautiful hot beverage, it is fantastic as a refreshing iced tea!

What-ChaThis came as a sample from TTC. However, it was not an enjoyable brew. I made 2 batches of this: 5 g tea in 8 oz water and 2.5 g tea in 8 oz water. In both cases, the tea was a nice, smooth liquor but had a very strong and overpowering kale-like flavor with not so subtle notes of ongoing fermentation.
Flavors: Heavy, Kale, Sour
In the same week I drank this and the best darker oolong I’ve ever had; which will appear in the second LP group buy and it will not be rated so don’t try to look. While that was a good thing to do, I ended up not liking this as much as I should have. This is a great tea, no doubt, but compared to what I drank later that week… it was shattered by something very similar that also had notes of cream within the cocoa roasted oolong that has hairs. I look forward to the next lot of a Red Jade (any sort) from Taiwan Craft Tea. Nom Nom Nom, a fantastic stronger oolong that provides an almost black sensation to its taste.
I’ve read that GABA tea tends to have a tart note to it.. similar to hibiscus. Did you encounter that with this tea?
Well, GABA green does not. Some of the gaba teas have a funk to them, but from my observation it is from the roasting profile. I’ll know better as time goes on. I still have three different ones to try to see how they taste in comparison to the others.
The one I like from imperial teas of lincoln in the UK is so much honey lushness it makes me giggle. A beautiful tea, and the most honey I have tasted outside having it actually in your tea. But you can tell its not sweet.

Most people aer aware that i’m generally not a fan of oolongs -unless they’re roasty ones, and even then it’s hit or miss. This one falls somewhere in the middle..it’s not super roasty but it’s not a green oolong. there’s a sweetness to this that i like but there’s also another flavour that i can’t exactly pinpoint. Maybe fruit?
