From Tea Masters

Cultivar: Qingxin Oolong
Harvested by hand on January 4th, 2015
Origin: Zhushan, Nantou county

Process: rolled, low oxidized Oolong. No roasting.

The dry rolled leaves are as big as high mountain leaves. The fresh green leaves have stems and white buds. The scent of these dry leaves is sunny, fresh and sweet.

The brew is light yellow with a touch of green. It has a nice mellow taste and an elegant aftertaste. The low oxidation produces very light fruity scents.

A ‘Dong Pian’ (winter petal) harvest happens when the weather suddenly warms up for several days during winter. The tea bushes are tricked into believing that spring is coming and start producing new leaves (and lots of buds). The days are very short (because it’s winter) and the nights are still very cold, though. This produces conditions that are similar to high altitude, but the Zhushan plantation is only 400-500 meters high.

This makes this Dong Pian particularly interesting. The Qingxin cultivar is the same as in high mountains, the weather conditions are similar and the oxidation level is very low as well. What is different is altitude and the terroir.

I brewed 4 grams of this tea in my Hungni teapot (also from stephane). Each brew yielded a consistent and full flavored liquor. This tea is packed with notes of white flower, tropical fruits (mangosteen), and cane sugar. There is a nice subtlety of unroasted almonds and a vegetal umami (glutamic acid) that reminds me of tomatoes. The tea goes down the throat smoothly and brings a pleasant salivary affect to the mouth. there is a slight cooling in the throat as well as a strong and long lasting hui gan.

This is a very high quality low land oolong at an amazing price point. It’s fresh and strong flavors more than one year after being produced are a testament to the producers skill and the base materials quality.
