From thepuriTea

This unusual black tea is hand-rolled into spheres the size of chickpeas in southern Yunnan, China. Just two or three of them are enough for a fantastically bold brew with all the flavors of a crisp autumn day. It’s malty, nuanced and tannic like a fine Second Flush Assam black tea, but it also offers complex flavors of spiced, stewed apples, fallen leaves and cocoa that set it apart from other black teas. Floral aromas and a clean, bittersweet finish round out this singular infusion. Try it with breakfast, brunch, grilled duck or dark chocolate.

Tea to Water Ratio 1:1. If you prefer a stronger flavor, use up to two grams of tea for each cup of water.

Water: Filtered water is best. Use water at 212ºF (fully boiling)

Traditional Steeping: 3 to 5 minutes

Flash Steeping: First, we run warm water over the tealeaves and pour it off very quickly. This removes any impurities and “awakens” the tealeaves for brewing. Then, we steep the tea – 35 to 60 seconds.

Average as average gets. I felt like this tea fell really flat. It tastes like a boring, semi-sweet black tea. I wish I could add more than that to the flavor profile but really it was just kind of a bland black tea.

It smells and tastes very strongly of dark chocolate and not at all like you’d expect from the region. Very malty and rich in flavor, with an aroma to kick you awake in the morning. This tea also resteeps really well. Its price range is pretty much out of everyday drinking for me though. Likely an excellent cup for a downer day instead.

Nice, strong black tea. If I use more than 2 pearls, it gets a little astringent, but other than that the taste is nicely bittersweet. Malty, too. One thing I like in particular (and this applies to most of the teas I’ve had from thepuriTea, actually) is that it doesn’t leave my mouth feeling dry. As much as I love tea, I really, really hate how dry some kinds make my mouth. That’s just not a nice way to start the morning. Not so with this tea. =)
