Boom! I ran out of my stash of the now defunct SpecialTeas blend and after looking around for a new supplier I landed on Upton. This one is huge and heavy . . . a tea of planetary proportions. It’s the only tea I take with cream and sugar (a LOT of sugar) and there is nothing you can do to calm this one down. I love it.

I had to do a lot of experimenting to find just the right steeping time for this tea. I started with the recommended 3 minutes and gradually lessened the time. I think I finally got it down this morning. 2 1/4 minutes seems to be just right for my tastes.

Wow, this is brisk. Bold, earthy, good amount of astringency. I think next time I might steep slightly less than 3 minutes, but this was just what I needed to help me stay out of bed. I am in that weird period between ending winter classes and starting summer classes and having nothing to do is making me want to sleep all day. This tea is kind of jolting me awake!

Brewed up strong pretty quickly. Has a classic tea taste which always makes me want to make iced tea (and that is exactly what I did with it), yet there is also some earthiness to it. This is really hitting the spot tonight after doing a ton of yard work on an unusually warm Winter day. Very rich…the taste is lingering in my mouth for some time after drinking it. The price is very reasonable as well. Worthy of a re-order for sure.

This is quite nice – brisk yet drinkable! It’s really strong plain, and even with milk/2 sugars it is quite robust! It’s not very nuanced or distinctive, so it’s not going to be my favorite, but I found it enjoyable on this gloomy afternoon.

Wonderful pick-me-up with a splash of milk. Brewed the lazy way with 1 tsp (not weighted) of tea in a basket right in my m-f-teatime mug. Lots of bits left in the cup, paper filter would be been better. There is some astringency that builds up but it is tolerable.

So glad it’s almost Friday. This week hasn’t been nearly as stressful as last week, but working full-time is just really draining on my overall reserves of just about everything.

Anyway, had this tea again this morning as promised. With a generous amount of cream and sugar, a tea with what felt like ragged jagged edges was transformed into a smooth and flavourful cup. I also only steeped for three minutes, which helped.

So far, this tea still falls into the perfectly acceptable but not scrambling to restock category. And it’s just as well. At least it reminds me that my love for tea isn’t broken.

I agree about working draining reserves. There’s a reason I’m heading to bed by 8pm most nights. :/

Courtney

I’m with you both. I am falling asleep on the couch far too many nights.

I just had a bunch of sheng, and it’s 8pm, and I’m thinking of bed. Meh.

My second steeping of this tea was a significant improvement over the first. I reduced both the temperature and the time, resulting in elimination of the unpleasant burnt flavor that ruined my previous pot. Piping hot, the flavor was extremely good; like many blacks, this tea increases in astringency as it cools, which resulted in my last half-cup being quite difficult to swallow, the only negative note in this otherwise very enjoyable pot.

This tea isn’t my favorite. It just tastes rather flat and traditional to me. However, I understand its appeal in that sense as a classic base tea.
