From Verdant Tea

In the summer we love pairing pu’er with mint. This year we wanted to push the boundaries with a Tulsi (Holy Basil) and pu’er pairing. Tulsi shares a lot of mint qualities, but is more grounded and sweet and balanced. This very simple blend leans heavily on the complexity and taste of Master Han’s shu pu’er. This tea was made with such care that we only needed three ingredients in the blend to achieve the sweet and refreshing taste we wanted.

Cinnamon adds sweetness and draws out the caramel in the tea. Goji berry adds body and edge to help this tea perform well both hot and iced. Finally the tulsi rounds out the blend, balancing it and creating a refreshing flavor. This tea is wonderful in a big mug as a before bed comfort brew, or iced up in a pitcher and garnished with fresh spearmint leaves.

I got a sample of this and I will be going back for more. I’d never tried holy basil before… but I think I really like it. =] It blends well with the cinnamon, and the puerh in the background… I’ll pay a little more attention on the subsequent steeps, but it was a lovely end to my night.

I find the tulsi disappears in the subsequent steeps, but since I also love cinnamon I don’t mind so much. :)

On the 24th day of December, my tea advent calendar gave to me… an unopened sample pack of… pu’erh?

I admittedly did not have high hopes for this one. Not always a fan of cinnamon-heavy teas, and less a fan of pu’erh. But – this was actually surprisingly tasty! Real cinnamon, light on the pu’erh, a few other complementary flavours… I actually enjoyed it. I didn’t check, but it tasted a bit like this had some black or white tea blended in too – either that or it was a fantastically good pu’erh base. Either way, glad this one held up and was actually good! I’m probably going to offload the rest owing to too much tea, but I’m glad I got to try this.

The first time I saw this tea was in a TTB and though I usually avoid pu’erh I meant to try this as per Cavocorax’s suggestion. However, I ended up forgetting and passed it along. Luckily, my tea twin Roswell Strange has me covered as she sent along a teaspoon for me to taste. Thank you!

Sipping on this cup, I am grateful that the pu’erh flavor is essentially non-existent. Nonetheless, this is still not a tea for me. It is mostly a hot cup of cinnamon water with some ginger and herb flavors to round it out. All not flavors in a tea I care enough to reach for so although I am happy for the chance to try something new, I am also glad it was just the one serving.

SSTTB: Pick #20

Last one of the night. I’ve enjoyed exploring the Pu’Erh in The Box; they’re blends I wouldn’t have picked for myself otherwise, but I enjoyed them all quite a bit! More so than I anticipated, anyway.

This one kind of surprised me; I totally didn’t realize there was Tulsi in this when I was making it – and then, when I was tasting something really funny and kinda odd when I started sipping at it I had to go look up the ingredients. Yup; that weird taste was totally basil. And, now knowing that’s what I’m tasting I like it. It was much weirder when I didn’t know what it was.

The cinnamon was definitely strong and I’m not usually a huge cinnamon person but the Tulsi totally helped temper it for me so that it wasn’t just cinnamon or too much cinnamon. And yeah, this is actually sweet like the name suggests/promises so that worked in its favor too. Actually, I think my biggest dissappointment was that the Pu’Erh base was pretty light/covered up by all the other stuff! I wanted more of the earthyness of it!

Man, I really want to keep playing with this one! I liked it a lot! So I guess my question for OMGsrsly is: would you be terribly upset if I kept the rest of this one for myself?

This was my first Puerh! The main taste was the cinnamon, but with some earthiness behind it. Normally, I find the cinnamon in tea to be too in-my-face and that it completely overwhelms everything else. Not so with this tea! I enjoyed it.

See?! Puerh is not scary! Glad you enjoyed it, so many people simply do not try it because when they hear how it is made they assume all kinds of crazy things about the taste of it. Yay for you! :D

It’s like the yogurt of tea! No big deal! Come on. If you go look on Wikipedia, it also says “The kombucha culture can also be used to make an artificial leather”.
