From Yunnan Sourcing

Cheng Shen Hao is a brand of Pu-erh that was started in 2008 by Mr. Chen Sheng He, a long time tea drinker and Guangdong native. In 2008 he signed a contract with more than 100 Lao Ban Zhang villagers for exclusive rights to their harvest. It was after this that Chen Sheng Hao brand pu-erh became known and soon after he began to produce teas from Yi Wu, Naka, Nan Nuo and Bu Lang as well.

This 2013 Spring Na Ka production is a very high quality production from wild arbor tea trees and bushes from the Na Ka mountain area in Menghai County. It’s the first Na Ka tea I have offered, and did so because I feel it’s an excellent example of the Na Ka terroir that’s both good and affordable!

The tea has been stored in Guangdong since 2013 and the hot and humid storage has helped it along by transforming it’s bitter and astringent Northern Bu Lang character into something rich and complex. It’s fruity, nutty and has a chicken soup thickness to it. There is definitely still a fair amount of astringency and bitterness with this tea, but that’s expected, and needed for this tea to continue to age and grow in stature.

357 grams per cake!

Two nights in a row of 2013 Chen Sheng Hao Na Ka sheng — from mrmopar 5 years ago? Hope you’re well tea friend.

Plastic baggie California storage ain’t no thing to this tea. Champ leaf. Roasted barley nose. Starts moderately date-sweet, then quickly moves astringent with the second cup. That softens with the next 8 or so steeps as cactus bitters prickle my tastebuds. Bittersweet throat. Ends gently sweet with the long steeps. The sheng that end sweet make it feel like a complete experience. Only issue is it’s a bit thin some pours.

This had been humid-stored before it landed in my cupboard. Wet, decaying wood and some rain-filled ashtray notes. Sounds notsogood, but if you know what you’re getting into, it might be a welcome flavor. This tea, both evenings, has paired well with laying down in bed :)

Naka Group Buy, Backlog

I had this tea on Sunday-Monday. I had steeped this 4-5 times on Sunday, but the overall flavor wasn’t too appealing. I figured I’d move on from this and come back to it on Monday to see how much the overnight rest would change the flavor of the tea—not much. I will admit that from the 2-3 teas I’ve tried out of the group buy thus far, this was my least favorite of the bunch. The flavors (leather, moss, & creek rock bed) were consistent throughout the session, but after a while, it became bitter/astringent. I wasn’t able to get past the 10 steep mark, unfortunately. I try to keep a sheng going for a while, knowing that there’s often potential for it to change, but this one hadn’t really changed at all.

Got this tea from Liquid Proust’s latest group buy. I have tried four Naka teas and I would say that this one is the most aged having an orange colored tea liquid and my least favorite. It had developed a lot of negative storage flavors already. I guess you would call them leather and tobacco. It did improve over twelve steeps but the storage flavors lingered strongly through about eight steeps. This one might improve with time but it would need a number of years storage.

I steeped this twelve times in a 150ml gaiwan with 8.2g leaf and boiling water. I ave it a 10 second rinse. I steeped it for 5 sec, 5 sec, 7 sec, 10 sec, 15 sec, 20 sec, 25 sec, 30 sec, 45 sec, 1 min, 1.5 min, and 2 min.

I can relate to the storage flavour in this one.
