From Yunnan Sourcing

We have offered the “Silver Strands” 银丝 varietal green tea (a robust one leaf to one bud ratio) since 2005, but decided to also offer it’s first flush tippy “pure bud” counterpart. Picked in the earliest part of spring (in Late-February) before the spring rains arrive, this pure bud pluck features small hairy silver tips with no leaf.

Sweet, buttery and crisp vegetal umami character makes this tea perfect for starting your day (or any time of day). We recommend brewing in a gaiwan using 85-90C water and very short steeps.

A fine hand-picked and processed tea that showcases Silver Strand varietal and Yunnan teas in general!

Harvest Area: Mojiang, Simao (Yunnan)

Harvest Time: Late-February-Early March

Spring 2023: Another wonderful green tea from YS! Dry leaf fragrance is awesome, smells almost like an apple pie. Complex flavor with apple sweetness, but also hints of herbs and cinammon, florals, cooked veggies, and a buttery texture. Only drawback is it seems to have a really drying effect on my mouth, so probably wouldn’t pick this to drink every day.

Also: 2 minutes is on the long side for a first steep with this delicate tea. A two-minute steep brings out a bit of bite and some more grassy tones. If you only steep for 1 minute western-style (my preferred method), it will accentuate more of the lighter and sweeter floral/fruity notes.

[Spring 2019 harvest]

This is one of the most interesting of the Yunnan green teas. Pure Bud Silver Strands has a dry aroma of apple, florals, and a butter-fried carrot. Wet leaves then smell of freshly cut grass, cooked vegetables, and cinnamon.

The taste is quite complex so my note will only scratch the surface of the flavours present. First infusion is herbaceous, metallic and alcohol-like (think gin). Later, it becomes more savoury with a tart finish and I get notes such as fennel and straw. The aftertaste then displays a tangy profile with flavours of sugarcane, malt, butter, and plant stems. It is slightly drying, but the astringency never becomes overwhelming.

I also really like the velvety, bubbly, and mouth-watering texture, as well as the relaxing cha qi. It’s a truly great green tea in all respects.

YS has a great variety of green teas! I never liked a lot of green tea until trying some of theirs.
