Help Differentiate Chiyabari Nepal Black Offered by Different Vendors

Howdy All!

David’s Tea Nepal Black which, they tell me, is from a section of Jun Chiyabari that they own is my current favorite tea.

I have noticed that the Jun Chiyabari Nepal black is sold by other vendors.

Can anyone in the know help me differentiate between the types of Nepal black that Jun Chiyabari sells and that other vendors offer?

This tea knocked my socks off, but I would like to find the same tea not sold by David’s if at all possible.

Thanks for any help you can provide!

Jun Chiyabari is a tea garden in Nepal in the Dhankuta district. They harvest their black teas in the same way that Darjeeling teas are harvested, so there is a First Flush in the spring, and Second Flush in the summer, and an Autumnal Flush.

I don’t know if the tea from David’s is from one of the flushes or a blend. My guess is that it’s a blend since they don’t state first or second flush. I can say that the Jun Chiyabari Second Flush from Single Origin Teas is one of my favorite teas. Upton also sells a first flush that is really nice.

Hi Veronica, thanks for your input.

David’s Tea told me that their Nepal black is harvested year round…so, no particular flush, I guess, and that constitutes a blend of flushes?

Yep.Have you tried other Nepali teas? The teas from that area are amazing!

I just got a little more information. I visited a small tea shop in NJ that had some Jun Chiyabari. We compared the tea I had from DT and his. The DT is much blacker.

So if anyone can recommend a Jun Chiyabari fully oxidized tea that is offered by another vendor besides DavidsTea, I would much appreciate it!

And, thanks, Veronica. I am going to make it a point to try every strong black Nepali tea I can get my hands on. What are your top 2 or 3?

My favorite Nepal tea is Upton Tea TM56 Mist Valley. I believe it is a second flush and it bears comparison with the best Darjeelings I’ve tasted. It also a fantastic bargain at about $10 for 100 grams. Unfortunately it appears to be out of stock at the moment.

I’ve only had one Jun Chiyabari, from Single Origin Teas, and I really liked it. Hope that helps some.

The Single Origin is one of the best teas I’ve ever had, if you can try it when it’s very fresh! I’ve also tried it when it’s been in my cupboard for a while and it isn’t as delicious.

I really enjoyed the Fikkal Estate SFTGFOP1 Cl. from Upton, and Himalayan Splendor from Teavana. The one from Teavana is discontinued, but I know they’re selling at least one Nepali tea in their store.

There is a company called Nepali Tea Traders, and I’ve had a few of their teas, but I didn’t take notes while I was drinking them, and now I can’t remember which ones I tried. At any rate, the three teas I tried from there were unflavored blacks, and they were all very good. I just ordered Himalayan Gold and Khumbu Black from them, but my order hasn’t arrived yet.
