My kitty ate a tea leaf, should I be worried?

So this morning my kitten was up on the counter as he always is, since he recently figured out how to get up there, and I had a tiny tea leaf in my tea spoon when I went to make my morning mug, so I threw it in the sink. My kitten promptly ate it. It was a leaf from my decaf lady grey, which is a decaf EG with lavender. I am worried that it might upset his stomach or something worse, although it was a very small leaf, but he is not a big cat yet. Have any other steepsters had a similar experience/can share some insight/ease my worrying? Thanks!

My first though would be a caffeine concern but if you’re talking a tiny leaf (even with a tiny cat) you’re probably in the clear. Keep an eye out for vomiting, diarrhea, etc and go to vet if anything unusual occurs. I’m impressed he ate it! Mine drinks the odd sip of tea but the leaves are offensive to her nose.

Thanks for your reply! He seemed to be ok afterwards, maybe a bit wilder than usual, but he’s pretty crazy as it is so that could just be him normally. At least it was decaf! Lol, I was surprised he ate it as well, he usually sniffs my tea and quickly backs up (probably because it’s hot on his nose lol) but he hasn’t tried to eat out of my steepers yet. I guess he saw me put it in there and was like it must be food, it’s in the sink! He also likes chewing on papers and has eaten part of my Coach purse (bad kitty lol) so he’s a little bit strange. My boyfriend also monitored him for an hour after he ate it and he was good, so I think he will be alright.

Glad to hear it. I recently had to take my kitty to the vet after one of the two cats we were fostering for friends scratched her and nicked her eye. No fun for anyone! Sometimes they are like perpetual children, constantly doing things that are dangerous.

Kitty will most likely be fine. You say he was a bit wilder and that surprised me, since lavender usually has a calming effect. If you are really concerned, go to Pet Well Being. They sell pet meds, but in addition they offer a live chat with experts. They ere wonderful to me when my dog was sick and passed away.lol

An update – he seems like he is fine, back to his normal, not as crazy but still crazy self. Thanks for the feedback everyone! I just won’t let him have anymore, especially not from my steeper (if I can stop him). Kittys are like little kids, eep I worry like an overprotective mom too probably! Lol :)

Cats and tea are an interesting and good combination!

That I agree with :) My cats drink tea from time to time but they mostly enjoy very mild and watered down tea, such as a Pu Erh or Oolong on it’s last steep. I suppose to a cat the tea smells interesting, it’s the closest my cats will ever get to travelling the world.

Mine loves smelling the dry tea but is worried by hot tea, the steam scares him off lol, which is good, I don’t want him getting burnt! But cats and tea are definitely a wonderful combo, two of my favorite things :)

One of my cats, Espeon who has to try everything, is notorious for trying to drink my tea. I make her a small dish of catnip tea ever so often so she can ‘sip’ with me. So far she has managed to not scald herself or drink too much of it, but I usually have to toss the tea out if she manages to get hold of a cup because she tests the temperature by dipping her paw in it first…ewww.

My cat drinks out of cups so thinks everything is fair game. I got over it. :)

Oh I don’t mind her sticking her face in my cups, but dirty paws do kinda gross me out.

I’m happy I came across this thread. There has been many times where if I drop tea leaves, my cat will pick it up and walk over to her water dish and drop it in there. I usually notice so I’ll clean it up right away and give her fresh water but I wondered if I should be worried if I wasn’t near to see her doing that and she drank it. I have never noticed a difference in her behaviour though. On the plus side, I like to think she’s a genius and just wants to steep her own “dish” of tea :P
