Removing tea smells from travel mugs using unflavoured dencher tablets

Hello everyone,

So I can’t remember where in particular I read this, but I know it was suggested on steepster to use unflavoured dencher tablets to remove any lingering smells of yesterday’s tea from your travel mug/lid. Well, first let me tell you what a challenge it was to find unflavoured ones, but I finally found while that didn’t explicitly say it was unflavoured, but didn’t indicate a particular flavour at all. anyway, I’m wondering how many you use, how long you soak your lids and stuff, and how quickly you notice the smell disappearing.
And, are there actually ones that say they’re unflavoured? or are we just lucky if we find ones that don’t indicate a flavour at all? because these ones smell…clean, or something. But they are not scentless.
Thoughts?
Thanks, steepsterville!

I just buy the cheapy ones. Often they are peppermint flavoured but I find that doesn’t make a difference. I put one tablet in the bottom of the mug and fill it with warm water, right to the top. Then I loosely attach the lid (or just set the lid on without screwing it on). Then I leave it sit for about 15 to 20 minutes. I make sure to rinse it really well, then let it fully dry before using it. Seems to work for me, gets rid of the tea smell and doesn’t impart any denture flavours either.

Oh, so you put it right into the mug itself? that’s interesting. And I originally got the mint ones, but they made my lid smell of epic amounts of mint and I’m still struggling to get the mint smell out. It’s mostly the cillacone extra-tea storage compartment (in the timolino) that’s giving me the issue. The plastic/steel seems to be just fine.

Yes I just put it right into the mug. The other thing I have done is soak the lids (not the mugs) in a vinegar water mix. 1 part vinegar in 3 parts hot water. A scrub brush helps get into the corners. Then wash them really good after. I don’t like to soak the mugs (depending on the style) because the water can seep into the seams and get inside the walls of the mugs.

Also if you can, take off any silicone seals if they are removable and wash them separately. You can get a lot of tea stuck under the seals and that often holds a lot of the taste in the lids.

Would an overnight soak in vinegar and baking soda along with hot water have a similar effect?

Yes, I definitely remove the storage compartment because like you said, tea smells can get trapped in there.
You know, I thought of the vinegar thing, but i’m so scared of my lid smelling like vinegar for the rest of my life. Uggh. Sometimes I hate having such a sensitive nose.
Thanks for the replies, by the way!

Wouldn’t baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) work to remove both smells and stains?
