These spammers probably use robots to create accounts and post? Perhaps implement some kind of reCHAPTA?
We do actually have automated systems in place to catch spam posts from bots, but like anything it’s never perfect. But because of that, we do think many of the accounts posting content (not just creating accounts) are from actual humans paid to create content (it’s a cheap, common practice to hire companies with tons of people in places like India to post spam content in an attempt to increase your search engine ranking).
We could do some sort of additional verification like a captcha when creating content, but our belief is that it is negatively impactful on the experience and we aren’t certain it would have much of an effect, so we’ve opted for different methods so far. But we’ll continue to keep an eye on it.
This seems a new twist, lots of posts that look like they almost make sense, about tea, and not really selling anything, but apparently not written by a human interested in discussing tea. It’s almost as if the bots really did take up an interest in tea. I won’t need to flag which I think are like that since there are several, very recent. To be spam it should mention a product, or link to one in the profile, and based on a couple of clicks these didn’t.
Yeah, I noticed that too. As I said in another thread:
It’s weird, usually bots like these cobble together ledgible posts and then just link their unrelated product in their profile. Instead, they’re swarming, making topics, and then responding to each other’s topics.
I wonder if they’re secretly rating teas without leaving reviews, and posting on the forums to add legitimacy (thinking they’ll less likely get banned if they have a forum presence). At this point, the entire front page is 80% weird engrish teabot spam and 20% callgirls.
@john-in-siam I think I know what you’re referring to, but would you mind messaging me just to make sure I’m aware of the situation you’re referring to?
Very new user all of their posts link back to their own site, and they seem to make them just to do that, even posting in old threads that have nothing to do with their site.
