Does Pu-Erh stain your teeth and if so do you use whitening toothpastes?

This is a question for all Pu-Erh drinkers out there, I hope you guys answer.

I drink shou pu’erh every day and I personally don’t have that problem, my teeth don’t stain luckily for me.

But I do remember a similar discussion a while back and someone had mentioned brushing their teeth with baking soda, that it was quite effective.

Might be something to try?

Well so do I but it doesn’t stain much, I’m actually quite sure it’s coffee that makes teeth go yellow. I mean I was just wondering…

Oh, then I wouldn’t worry too much about it, i think it affects mostly people who have very tin enamel…

There are a few threads on this topic. This one seems to have some helpful info that may get you started:

I haven’t noticed an issue yet, but I was thinking about picking up some of those strip whiteners even before I started drinking tea more heavily. I think I’ll just add them to my shopping list :)

I drink shou pu erh daily and on my last dental checkup I had my dental assistant ask me if I was a tea drinker… so apparently it does stain my teeth. I use a whitening toothpaste but it must not be helping. Now, I can look in the mirror and I don’t notice any staining, but a trained eye was able to tell.

Pretty much any tea will stain you’re teeth if you’re drinking lots of it. Same with coffee drinkers. I drink a lot of pu’erh and black teas, and I’ve gotten in the habit of always brushing my teeth after a tea session.

Baking soda is very effective for whitening your teeth, HOWEVER it’s an abrasive and leaves lots of microscopic scratches in the enamel

I use baking soda every once in a while, only once a month or so, and it makes my dad (who’s a dentist) cringe when he’s around.

I’ve been told it is harsh on the gums too. I use peelu powder mixed with toothpaste for the same effect, it is better on gums but I don’t know if it scratches teeth.

I use activated charcoal every once in a while whiten my teeth. I’ve been a heavy coffee and tea drinker since I was a teen and my dental hygienist always comments on how white my teeth are so it seems to work. Nowadays almost all toothpastes have whitening effects, I use Tom’s Anise (or is it fennel…) and Cinnamon Clove which keep them nice and sparkly.

Another option is oil pulling with coconut oil. Daily swishing with coconut oil is supposed to whiten tea in as little as 1-2 weeks. More details and how-to on my blog: http://worldvitae.com/oil-pulling/

Thanks for that, it really doesn’t sound appealing to me though.

The oil pulling phenomena is mostly hype. There isn’t much evidence it does any good, and it indiscriminately removes bacteria. Including the good kind that is needed to keep your teeth healthy. And accidentally aspirating any of the oil while swishing it around is extremely dangerous.
