drank Monks Blend by Tropical Tea Company
1220 tasting notes

Having some of this iced while waiting for Formula 1 practice to start. Before I added ice this was SO red thanks to the grenadine. It actually looked like grenadine syrup!

I’d never had a Monks Blend before, but at a dollar an ounce, I figured I would give it a shot since it sounded like something I would like.

This has a nice sweetness from the grenadine, and the vanilla gives it nice touch of cream. Very refreshing and well paired with the black tea base. I also have a LOT of this now because Tropical Tea Company is extremely awesome in the customer service department…more on that in a review about them!

Sounds like you need liquor in it and an umbrella. Yum…and racecars…

Haha, when I was pouring it into the glass I was asked if I was making an alcoholic drink. But since the actual qualifying session isn’t for another 3 hours from now, that won’t be happening today!

Let me get this right… it’s pomegranate vanilla?

momo 13 years ago

It’s just a flavoring oil so I really don’t even know if they were going for original grenadine or what. I kind of get pomegranate, but I get almost black currant too.

Grenadine is pomegranate syrup

Dylan Oxford 13 years ago

I like both of those. And all this tea is on sale for $1 an ounce? Man… if we hadn’t put in like a two pound order with MarketSpice this morning….

momo 13 years ago

Ha, I know. They’ve got a 35% off code on top of that if you find their post on the discussion boards to make it even more enticing.

Dylan Oxford 13 years ago

Seriously? $0.65 an ounce?

momo 13 years ago

Yes! It’s not been like super high quality stuff but it’s more than drinkable. I got 4 kinds of the $1 an ounce teas (2 oz of each) and then one that was $5 for 2 oz and it was like $14 with shipping.

Okay, I put like five question marks there, to emphasize my incredulity. The darn posty-demons stole my question marks!

Ha! Found it. Oh man, I need a bigger tea cupboard.

Sure, the original grenadine is made from pomegranate juice and sugar, but what the majority of people know as grenadine today is not.

Is it possible that another company has the same tea but better quality? I got my Monks Blend from The London Tea Room and it is VERY good excellent quality! Yet my teas from Tropical Tea Company while not bad by any means are not quite as good.

Blake 13 years ago

Very much so. It can be a matter of tea quality, or the specific blend. Monks Blend is just that, it’s a blend. Consider it like Earl Grey. You take 20 different Earl Grey teas and they can hardly resemble one another. The quality of the tea leaf, the type and ratios of the base blend, the quality of the flavoring oils, the amount of oils used, etc. will all factor into it.
