Chocolate Orange Honeybush

From my mystery grab bag. Really nice orange flavoring, both in the aroma and the infusion. It’s very delicious, doesn’t seem artificial at all. However, the chocolate is kind of weak aromatically, and I can’t taste it at all. I’m pleased with the orange, but the rating is lower because of the lack of promised chocolate.

Today we had rain and hail after a mostly sunny afternoon. So it was a good tea day. There is a nice orange aroma, both in the dry tea and brew. The flavour is mostly orange as well. Not really any chocolate, but still good. Having my second cup while watching Tangled.

The orange is a dominate ingredient, especially in the aroma. The moment I opened the pouch, the scent of orange filled the kitchen. After steeping for 10 minutes, the orange fragrance softened a bit, and I could pick up on notes of chocolate and the familiar nutty notes of honeybush.

This translates to the flavor, as I could taste all the components of the tea: I got a strong orange flavor. Sweet and juicy! The honeybush adds some sweetness and the nutty flavor to the cup and I like the way the nutty notes meld with both the orange and the chocolate. It’s a nice marriage of flavors.

I would like there to be more chocolate in this. Yeah, I know: I always want more chocolate.

It’s still a tasty blend. Definitely more orange than chocolate though. And it should be the other way around.

Have you ever had a steep where you try to put the baby to sleep but she doesn’t want to so she hangs out with daddy while your in the shower and when you get out you notice the toilet needs cleaning and then you end up cleaning all the bathrooms; then you come back to your tea an hour after all that? Sorry to ramble.

Anyway. An interesting tea. For a honeybush its very light on flavor. Hints of chocolate pop up here and there. Orange is definitely dominate though. Maybe the long steep really brought out more orange.

I wasn’t thrilled to get this in a mystery bag as I’m not usually a fan of chocolate in teas and haven’t been impressed by any other honeybush I’ve tried, but it turned out to be an exception!

The scent is strong, distinct oranges, leaning more toward authentic than a fake cough syrup orange — I can smell the rind! — but there’s a slight medicinal edge. No chocolate to be found here! Nonetheless, I like it a lot.

It tastes more or less like it smells, although in flavor the honeybush peeks out from under the orange and there’s a slight unpleasant bitter edge. I would have never guessed there was chocolate if it wasn’t in the name!
